Why don't manufacturers install a ON-OFF switch for the ABS, like on certain motorcycles?

The only car I know, which had that feature, was the Ferrari F355. ABS could be deactivated by a button in the centre console.

Later on in the F355 life cycle this button was disabled by Ferrari.

I looked it up and ABS systems are required on all new passenger cars sold in the EU since 2007. Therefore, a disabling switch seems to be illegal now in the EU, at least.

In the USA, ABS is not mandatory, so manufacturers could in theory instal a deactivating switch but I presume they are scared of potential lawsuits.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

ABS systems base their action on a set of algorithms and not on a single on-off layout. The rate and speed in which a single wheel locks up gives an indication about the coefficient of friction and the projected release of brake pressure. Certain conditions, such as very low friction surfaces (ice, gravel), cornering or different friction surfaces (µ-split), require dedicated algorithms. Due to the car´s required stability, the rear axle should always receive less brake pressure than the front, therefore indicated slip on the rear axle under braking can also cause the front axle to be affected in their braking performance.

All this has to be adjusted for different tire compounds, different friction relations between tire and surface as well as surface undulations and suspension influences distorting the values the ABS system receives. Furthermore, the setup has to sustain the proper handling of the car and therefore remains limited as not to unsettle the car.

I personally believe that ice mode shows up the limitations of the system and its layout as this street-intended device has to adapt to too many parameters and circumstances and (possibly) all that with a limited amount of calibration for these extreme situations. The problem is obviously solved by applying a motorsport-derived system which a. has assumedly more processing power and b. can be adjusted for the specific use and components and therefore less easily triggers hazardous procedures.

That is Dark Blue Metallic. In person, it looks A LOT different (ugly). A color that looks more similar to that in person is Aqua Blue Metallic. It looks awesome in person.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Finally saw my first 991, a cab, in the flesh today

    - Easly the best cab ever,  no more hunchback

    - The eyebrows / whiskers don't bother me as much in the real world as in photos

    - The interior doors...still strike me as way too complex

    - Love the slighly bug eyed looks of the headlights

Still resisting buying one but it's not easy...I miss driving a porsche.

CPA4S - congrats on the purchase!

I could not resist not to notice: you advocate Cayenne in manual, yet you take 911 in PDK? ;)

are you keeping you 997.2 tt?

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

the manual makes the Cayenne more engaging for me whereas the 911 is already very connected. i wanted to try a PDK & this was a nice build that was on the lot so i thought it would be a great experiment car; finally it made the spouse happy: she has the opportunity to drive it at least.

the Turbo is gone - it was a Europipe outlay or trade for this & my dealor gave me an absolutley killer deal on the turbo trade.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

I have no Idea of why I can't turn the picture - but I've been driven the new Cabi S today extensively

    Let me share some pros and cons ;

Spec. basically fully loaded 991 S including 20' wheels costing a whopping 186k CHF.

    Pros:

Full leather - looks very very well done and far better than in a 997

interior : specially the feel of the buttons are way above a 997

PCM, interior lay-out and all dials look and feel high-end

Exhaust button : MUST HAVE - huge difference to normal mod and burbles almost AMG like - specially when you lift the throttle quickly - a huge step forward towards old systems

Appearance : WOW - I am not a fan of red - but boy does a 991 look hot in red with black 20'

    Cabriolet-shape : a huge step forward

Wind-shield : with a touch of a button - clever and cool looking

Cons : (I will get a lot of bashing for this indecision)

PDK : first of all a big improvement in gear shift speed to Gen1 - but I absolutely hated it after 20 min..... First you go 1-2-3-4 - and think wow - very fast very smooth - almost like a 458 - but better than a SLS for sure.....THEN it goes to sail-mode when you lift the throttle (downwards on a hilly road) and you think the engine has died - then you stop the car on a red light and the engine really goes out.....mail - so you push the Sport button or SportPlus to prevent this happening again as it freaks you out....although it starts fast again.

Now having solved that issue - you continue in SportMode (!) look at yr dial and cruising below 50 km/h (city limits) and already u are again in 4th or even higher....slightly more throttle and it shifts down a couple of gears (thank god it had SportExhaust so at least that sounded good) but 2 seconds later yr again in 5th or worse........

Entering the highway it jumps gears like no tomorrow and after 6th - there is a huge drop in RPM in 7th.....very nervous I felt.

so back to full Manual mode - NOW we're talking.....fast changing gears and a very nice wheel with great paddles. However, I catched myself doing the same as PDK constantly whipping some gears around......

So : if you use yr car daily and you hit traffic all the time - go for PDK - if you drive it for FUN - get a manual....indecision

Driving dynamics : I have not driven the coupe - but despite PASM the car felt like a california - heavy..... - I am surely no benchmark here with the GT3RS - but driving home with my RS it was like day and night. Guy's anybody who has not driven a RS - get you're hands on one and drive it on a twisty road.....it's mindbogglingly good ....

Breaks : They felt mushy. I am sure they are not - but again no comparison to my car (weight ? yes)

Engine : well....see driving dynamics. on the other hand the car had only 300 km so it surely hasn't loosed up but it does not at all feel like the numbers it produces in reality. a GTS feels faster......

Bottomline : a beautiful beautiful car with a FANTASTIC quality interior - but if you're into Sportscars wait for a GT model or buy a GT2,GT3 etc. - however, I am sure it will find lots of buyers ! broken heart
