Right now it is only a U.S. recall.....

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

BMW recall 1.3m for possible fire risk. It's positive that manufacturers recall proactively even if the fire hazard seems minimal.

Yep i was thinking the same even though i have not come across any reports on the 991 at all yet..

Better to be on the safe side?

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Recall is valid worldwide, including Germany.

In Germany, 758 cars are affected, worldwide 5234 cars are affected.

Owners in Germany will be contacted soon.

Affected are only cars from October 2011 to January 2012 production.

Well...you are onto something here indeed.

I'm glad I ordered my Panamera Turbo S that late...they "caught" the titan turbocharger issues in time.

    Still...this shouldn't happen.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Just pinged my dealer and my car is part of the recall.  Not an ideal situation, but dealer was on the hook for a "free" oil change post break-in so I'll get that and the "free" alignment done while the recall work is completed.

I had a car from the first batch of the 997.2s and had to take it in for the exhaust TSB and fuel pump recall, so I guess I knew what I had coming.  Normally the service guys don't mind me poking around, not sure if this being a recall will change that behavior.  Always prefer to see what they are doing versus hearing about it.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Just another reason why I generally never buy the first model year of anything ...

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Yes, it's tough being a 'pioneer"!

They are easy to spot though, the pioneers are the ones with arrows in their back!

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Took the car in for the recall, couple pics included.  Mine was the first one they'd done.   Was very quick, but that's only because my fuel lines had not been chafed by the coolant line.  If there was any damage on the fuel lines you are looking at a long, long service...

Spacer installed to keep coolant line from rubbing on fuel line

    spacer.JPG

    front under.JPG

Underside of car with one of the undertrays removed, to inspect the area of concern the other tray had to be removed.

    underside.JPG

Talking with the service tech was interesting, he mentioned the 991 is better to work on from his standpoint.   More plastic parts to remove, but the critical components are easy to get to.  Maybe not so much for the home mechanic, but he prefers working on the 991.

He got a good laugh when I asked if I could quote him on that when my service bills aren't any cheaper than with the 997.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Hi, thank you for the pics. Do you have a specific picture to show where/how the spacer is installed? Front or rear? How many spacers? Since I live in Thailand and so far my dealer do not yet recieve this information from Porsche, my car is RHD.

Do you thing that this is the real big issue that will cause the oil leakage? or it is just a precaution step?

I already drive her for 1,000 miles and about to bring her to change an engine oil so I could ask my mechanic to follow your instruction of how to inspect the fuel line. Thank you in advance.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

would appreciate if you could provide pic of the area it was installed too. My dealer has not been informed about this yet and your instruction would be very helpful esp. if we need to DIY it.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Sorry, I do not have pics of all the areas to inspect nor of the final installation.  The service tech looked at multiple areas is all I can tell you.

But more importantly I'm not at all qualified to instruct you how to do this nor would I due to the potential severity of the issue that drove the recall.  I'd keep pressing your dealers, your cars may or may not be involved in the recall.

    Regards

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Thanks for the pics. Mine was done last week. They told me it was their first. The service bill (covered under warranty) showed 3.5 hrs labor,  so I guess they took time to look around!

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Hi RC, who would I contact to see if my car is affected (other than the dealership where I bought it)?  Or do you know if there is somewhere in the manual or on the car itself where it says when the car was actually manufactured?

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

i inspect the area today. it seem far from having rubbing issue but already get it done for peace of mind.

Your dealer, the one you bought the car from, has all the necessary information, incl. if your car is affected or not.

thanks RC, but my dealer said it wasn't affected and i asked another dealer and they said yes!

I just called the Porsche customer service number 1-800-767-7243 and they asked for the VIN # and unfortunately my car is affected!

This is very unfortunate. You need to have it fixed at an authorized dealer because of liability issues.

Speak to your own dealer again. He may just have told you that your car was not affected because he already had it fixed, and the call centre staff don't see that information.  Smiley

hi RC, yes--disappointed with the dealer in a few areas, but tis the nature of the business it seems!

Fritz:  that's a good point, i'll double check.  and if need be, i'll make the long trip to the closest dealer.

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Out of curiosity, how far away is your nearest dealer?

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

with or without the radar detector?

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Just came back to this post now.... Since my car 991S was affected during the production period (Car hand over to me in Taiwan April 20th), and even the recall had been done, my car was self-conbusted and burned down two days ago. I had shut off the car, and left in the parking space and 10min. after the fire starts. There isn't anything under might cause the exhaust burn, and looks like under the engine is clean, and most carbonated parts came from the top of the engine..... forensic still trying to figure out the cause of the fire, but the car was burned down to frame, not much can be investgated.... Porsche is comming in two days to figure out what went wrong.... will let you all know after....

Re: Porsche 991 Fire Risk - U.S. Recall

Wow... sounds really nasty! Hope everything will work out ok and you'll have a new 991 back soon!
