2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

After the chaotic Malaysian F1 GP where the rain really mixed things up, there is now a 3 week gap till the Chinese F1 GP.

3 weeks is a long time and I expect some of the teams will bring some performance upgrades to this race.

I think McLaren holds the edge on dry pace in qualification with a slightly smaller advantage in the race itself. But, if it rains, all that goes out of the window. Anybody can do well in the wet. It's much more about driver skill and good judgement rather than the car's own pace.

Hamilton is quicker than Button but Button is a more complete driver. But now that Hamilton is just aiming for consistent points finishes every race, he could be a major title contender this year.

I really think Massa will be mentally under pressure between now and Shanghai. He needs to have a strong race there to quieten the critics. Personally, I don't think he can deliver, partly because I don't think he has it in him but also because he is under so much media pressure that he cannot drive with the self-confidence needed to show what he can do.

Massa's problem IMO is that he needs the car to be working really well for him to show his ability. Alonso can shine with a great car but he can also produce unexpected results even with a car that does not drive well. He has a habit of achieving race results that his car has no right to achieve. This has put Massa in the shade in 2011 and 2012 since the Ferrari cars in both years have been far from ideal.

Add to that the fact that Perez is now a new star, and the pressure on Massa reaches an unbearable level IMO. He will crack at some point.

I think the dynamic that is emerging at RBR is also fascinating. Webber is driving well and seems self-confident and relaxed. Vettel seems tense and frustrated.

I also think it's been interesting to see Schumi outshine Rosberg at last. Rosberg needs to start delivering again.

Raikkonen is back and as good as ever. Grosjean really needs to iron out the mistakes. He is too eager and is taking silly risks.

I think Kobayashi really needs to start performing better. He is being totally outshone by Perez.

At Williams, I think Maldonado is quicker than Senna but Maldonado has made errors and has also had some bad luck.

At Force India, Di Resta is playing it smart and safe collecting points here and there so that his end of season total is better than Hulkenberg's.

I think Vergne had a great race in Sepang. I do think he is a better driver than Ricciardo. Let's see how this situation develops this year.

Caterham and Marussia have both had quiet, soild starts to the season among the backmarker teams.

But HRT grabbed a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons in Sepang.

I'm really looking forward to how things pan out in Shanghai.

Looking forward to a good race :)

Webber doesn't complain as he doesn't know for better car compared to Vettel who exploited something last year to full extent compared to this year, therefore frustration. Having said that, Webber was still slower than Vettel in both races.

Re: 2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Webber's fastest lap at Sepang was 1.41.017. Vettel's fastest lap was 1.41.342.

Re: 2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

That means nothing. During the race he was faster. How can you compare someone's speed just over one lap during the race? Have you watched it? As obviously a fan - I was following closely both. WEB was nowhere on Int. and when they moved to slicks he put here and there faster laps since he had softs, but VET had primes and was more consistent. He then pulled off after the collision and was just cruising around (as Horner said - brake problem). That's when WEB got that faster lap time (only few tenths faster and on softs!!).

It is very peculiar that nobody takes notes from the race itself and just pay attention on the final result, and many makes comments based only on that, which is only half true.

Re: 2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Interesting analysis, Easy, and I agree with most parts. For me, it is especially surprising to see how some drivers have developed over the years. Who would´ve expected Button, after all these years, become world champion and a solid driver at McLaren, even unsettling Hamilton on the way. Who would´ve thought that Schumacher takes three seasons to return to his old performance, Raikkonen returning obviously more determined than before. I have not been a big fan of Massa as a driver but it is sad to see that he cannot live up to expectations after his return to F1 and I believe that Alonso´s performance and position inside the team might him tremendously. Apart from the mental aspect, the car as it is setup might not help Massa either.

Since two races have been held by now, everybody knows each other´s strengths and weaknesses. From now on, it is a matter of development speed and effort, something that McLaren has always been strong at. Curious to see how Red Bull, not being the dominating team right from the beginning, and Ferrari with their mediocre car will fare over the next few races. Obviously, not matter whether they build a conservative or a revolutionary car, they won´t be an initial title contender. Don´t think that Lotus will be able to keep up their good pace over the entire season unless their performance and Raikkonen´s presence will earn them more sponsorship and therefore development funds.

I don't know how old you are or how long you have been following these discussions but if you want to participate in these F1 discussions here you'd be wise to be a little more humble and respectful of others opinions as you can see that is the case here with those that participate.and the general tone they set of respect and friendliness . Of course Easy watched the race, and he doesn't make opinions on final results for failure to analyse the race. I think you would learn a lot from his analysis , especially from someone who says thibgs like the car's performance plays a bigger role in the wet than in the dry .

Another great analysis Easy, nothing to add really apart from that it will be a long 3 weeks smiley

But I am going to Madrid in the mean time, so time should fly wink

Re: 2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Huh??!! It's got nothing to do with me being unfriendly, on the contrary! I felt that I can be more open and show honest opinion without false politeness. It's called sarcasm or ''pulling socks'' and I hope that ur old enough to understand that ;)!That's the way I talk! More so when I recieved the same from him by his cheecky reply with best laptimes chart on my more thorough link for complete race laptimes chart!

Or you would rather see more girly discussion when everybody approves whatever easy says or respond with ''interesting''?!!

    Cheers

Thanks Carlos. Apparently, some think that having a little courtesy and mutual respect is "false politeness".

@dxpetrov: this may be 'how you talk' but that does not mean it is what others consider appropriate. There's no need to discuss this further.

Its not what you say, but how you say it. One thing is how you may talk to old friends at a bar face to face, and another to here through a cold keyboard to people you might have not even met face to face.

If something should be already very evident to you by now in these threads is that we all rarely agree here when it comes to F1 and we are all honest and say what we think, but we don't make condescending comments of others opinions, make disrecpectful remarks, think we know everything and others don't have a clue, or carry an aggressive tone.

Not all forums have the same ambience and manners, so you are free to say what you like and be honest, but with courtesy, and respect for others opinions.

I agree - Jenson has matured as a driver and as a person. He is patient and accommodating with the media and I suspect this is a reflection of his generally calm and confident outlook. I think winning that world championship was certainly a catalyst.

I thought you might enjoy these photos of Jenson, from 1994. His team-mate back then was my good friend Costas Maitos - who still races karts in Greece and, in fact, is liked by everyone, much like Jenson! :).

Teams are complaining about the MB DRS yet they haven't podiumed, let alone taken a pole or been on the front grid.

Re: 2012 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

True, but the teams will be keen not to set a precedent within the FIA for something that they think is illegal to be considered legal.
