Sky is launching a dedicated F1 channel ... seems F1 will get a lot of exposure ... but it won't be cheap

RIP exclusive BBC F1 coverage ... F1 live coverage in the UK of all races will be with Sky next year and I can't see any way it will ever come back.
I enjoyed watching races live on my plasma screen while following F1 Live Timing, the BBC Driver Tracker and most recently, the new Helmet Cam view on my Mac :)
A great view of Jenson Button catching Fernando Alonso in the latter stages of the race :)

Martin Brundle is moving to Sky. Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard are staying with the BBC.
We waited 2 years for Jonathan Legard to go. Finally, everything was perfect this year but the cash ran out ...
It was especially symbolic that yesterday's F1 Forum ended abruptly due to a technical problem. Kind of reflects how the BBC F1 coverage is going.

James Allen joins BBC Radio 5 Live radio commentary team ... I'm glad - he was really good when we last heard him on ITV F1 coverage.
I wonder who will be the BBC TV race commentator for the 10 races that the BBC will show live on TV. Hope it's not Jonathan Legard again ...

That's interesting - some websites are already quoting interviews that F1 drivers are having with Sky Sports F1 ... it must be web content only so far then?

Good news for me anyway, I was expecting that you'd have to subscribe to Sky Sports to get the F1 coverage, but no, as long as you subscribe to HD you get F1 included. We do, but not to either sports or movies so happy days!

Yeah, me too. I subscribed to the Sky HD pack for an extra £10.25 per month on top of the usual Sky subscription (since that gives access to both Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports F1 HD at no extra charge). For me, it comes with a free Sky+HD box and free installation. The offer lasts till 29 March 2012. I don't currently subscribe to Sky Sports or Sky Movies (just Sky Entertainment Extra) so I'm glad I can subscribe to F1 coverage without having to add Sky Sports (I don't watch football, golf etc).
From 9th March, Sky Sports F1 will be channel 408 and Sky Sports F1 HD will be channel 459.
IMO the future of F1 is on Sky sadly ... BBC F1 coverage on TV should continue in its partial format till the BBC contract with Ecclestone runs out. Beyond that, who knows just how much more marginalised F1 TV coverage may become on the BBC.
In the end, I had no choice but to pay Rupert Murdoch :(

But you do follow cricket, if I recall correctly?
HD coverages of Test Matches, ODI's and T/20's are fantastic, especially when you can record and watch, or flick through, at your leisure...

Yeah, I love cricket but I don't get enough time to watch Test Matches or ODIs anymore ... so I have stopped subscribing to Sky Sports. I sometimes subscribe for the Cricket World Cup though ...
(I would never watch Twenty 20 matches .. it's too far removed from the kind of cricket I like ... but that's another story ... )

Didn't see much of the launch day, but Martin Bundle featured large in what I did see!
Lots of repeats I guess is to be expected - It will probably come into it's own following the start of the season...

I hope they show re-runs of great races from the past whenever there isn't a race weekend ... but I suppose that would involve getting footage from the BBC and ITV ...

Today looks promising... apart from 'talking to current teams', they have reviews of previous F1 seasons listed. 1988 & 1989, plus a look at the whole of the 90's, featuring major players of the era..
Re-runs of great races is something they surely must consider or else they will run out of fresh material pretty quickly..

About Sky Sports F1, I watched about an hour or so last night ... my Sky HD installation is scheduled for tomorrow ... but I managed to watch the same programme on an obscure channel called Pick TV ... I had never heard of it before ... and then by chance I stumbled across it ...
I liked the format ... some studio chat with other segments woven into it ... fingers crossed ... hope the coverage is interesting ...

Easy - just a tip from a long-time user of Sky+ and Sky+ HD.
If things ever go wrong with the system and they can do.. sometimes too often.. there is a 'quick fix' re-set which works 95% of the time..
Unplug the digibox from the mains supply, wait 10 seconds and then plug it in again. Don't switch the digibox back on for at least 2 minutes. When you do, the box re-boots and returns to the Sky home channel.
This is just a pointer which may save you a lot of time 'phoning for assistance or calling out, and waiting for, service engineers..

Watched highlights from 2011 season last night - seems very well put together and well presented..
Actually I quite like this process of preparing for the new season... kinda whets the appetite even more..
