981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

I can't believe that it's really already six years ago when my wife and I picked up the beloved 987 S in Zuffenhausen and we felt a little bit like cheating when booking the trip to Geneva for having a look at what could the successor of our first Porsche. Finally the Seal/Cocoa Boxster S triggered the P-obsession for us, followed by the even worse 'Ring obsession and the acquisition of the GT3 Smiley

When I spotted the first pics of the 981 in the i-net I was a bit sceptical whether the design may has become too "edgy" or even over-designed especially at the rear. Some pics suggest that the rear appears like a rather high/steep flat panel missing any "roundness" - being an old-school gentleman I'm convinced that a nice rear needs some curves Smiley Also I was not the biggest fan of the new center console when sitting in the 991 for the first time a couple of months ago.

The nicer was the surprise when I had the opportunity to take a closer look at the new Boxster in the flesh Smiley Yes, it's a bit of a departure from the "classic" design of the 987 (maybe even more than 991 vs. 997), but the design is coherent IMHO and not gimmicky or over-designed at all. It's hard to describe but what seems to look odd in some of the 2D-pics comes as a very natural flow of design if you walk around the car Smiley Funny enough in real life (as opposed to the pics) the rear now looks very Porsche to me (and yes, the curves are there Smiley) whereas the front looks a bit Maranello-ish to me (not a bad thing as I'm a bit an admiror of Italian design). Overall impression is that from a distance there is no doubt that you still spot a Boxster and not a CGT Smiley, though if you get closer you realise the more sporty stance of the new model: flat, wheel arches beautifully filled by the 20-inchers, nice blend of curves and straight lines, more aggressive appearance without pretending to be a Mini-Lambo or something. The design language's message is: I may be not a Supercar, but I am a super car Smiley I very much hope the same can be said once I had the chance to get behind the steering wheel getting in touch with the "inner values" of the 981. Anyway a sub 8 min Nordschleife laptime sounds very promising, same "league" as the first GT3....makes me think again how time flies by...

First approximation to the new Boster:

Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

A very unexpected observation for me was that I liked the partial bi-colour leather interior better than the full leather interior. This has nothing to do with my personal colour preferences (Boxster-red vs. Lime-Achat) but with the observation that the bi-colour design accentuates the new design clues ("boomerang" door handle mirroring the new inclined center console) better IMHO and also make for a more sporty appearance. Please judge yourselves:

Also the plastic material used for the dashboard in the bi-colour leather package does not make a cheap appearance:

For comparison purposes here are some pics of an Espresso full leather interior:133156675014912_int_espresso.JPG 133156675015413_dash_espresso.JPG

Visual difference on the dashboard are the vertical stitches but then one may argue that these interrupt the "flow" of the dashboard Smiley

Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

This pic shows the difference in design on the door interior design (compared to the bi-colour package): the nice design cues of the new door handles somehow disappear in a big uniform "colour pot" and - even worse - the plastic parts are more visible / more prominent as in the bi-colour design SmileyAlso I don't like the alu stripe too much as it's design shows no coherence with the "boomerang" handle and IMHO fits better into a Limousine (or a Carrera Cab Smiley) than in a sporty two seater.

    Great pics thank you!
Me too, I prefer the 981 to the 991.

Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

O.K. - that was it with the complaints Smiley

Amazingly the new center console suits the 981 better than the 991 IMHO simply because there is a nicer flow into the dashboard - the 981 dashboard is more round whereas the 991 dashboard is "steeper" which makes for a more cramped feeling in the 991 Smiley Overall this the first time that I like the Boxster interior much better than the Carrera interior - IMHO it has a more natural "flow" and sportier appearance Smiley

Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

Thanks for posting these great photographs, PJ, Smiley  I love the new interior - with the exception of those nice big lidded door pockets seem to have gone.

If I was ordering one, don't know whether I'd go for GT silver with that lovely red interior or white with my usual Ocean blue. I'd stay with full leather though, gives that wonderful ambience that the plastic lacks.

Sadly I'm not ordering one, but now that used 997.2 PDK with good spec and low mileages are tumbling in price That's what I would go for now if I was in the market for another Porsche.  I'm sick of being told by dealers the usual excuse that there is no discount to preserve residual values when our Cayman dropped £15,000 (25%) of new price in three months! Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

Hospitality in the Porsche booth was great and we were lucky that a technically very knowledged guy took a lot of time to answer all our questions while having some refreshments and snacks in the Porsche lounge.

    Some interesting tech infos:

    > finally the TFT display shows both oil temp and oil pressure

    > the front air intakes of the Boxster (as oppesed to the BoxsterS) are only "half open" (there are some plastic panels behind the grill).

Not sure weather it's possible to see in this pic:

    20_front_intake_lime.JPG

Shortly after observing this I noticed that for both models (Boxster and BoxsterS) the middle front air intake is "fake" (completely closed by a plastic panel). When I asked the Porsche employee about this he smiled and said: well, you may have heard about the rumors on a Turbo model......angrysmiley

Another funny thing was that the non-S models were equipped with the S-exhaust pipes. The Porsche employee explained that the reason for that probably is that the original production hardware for the non-S model was not yet available when they built the show cars...

Yes you are partially right! Our first Boxster was Arctic Silver with Ocean blue, our second, and sorely missed was Cobalt blue with Ocean Blue, and the Cayman Aqua Blue with Ocean blue. Smiley

On another subject we will be over to your area at end of August or September it would be terrific if we could meet up again! Smiley

do you need to have PCM to get the oil temp and oil pressure?

I think if you have front park assist, you get the half open situation .. some where to mount the sensor

I agree about the bi-color inside. It looks much better . The plain cocao, looks suddenly very ....plain and boring .

Re: 981 - impressions and infos from Geneva

Great photos and nice write up.  I am developing a lot of enthusiasm for the 981.  I also agree that the interior on the 981 is far more successful than on the 991.

Indeed PJ, this was what sent me thinking -  this beautiful 997S PDK in my favourite colour £10,000 less than we paid for our new Cayman!

Since you mentioned the depreciation of your Cayman and the monetary difference to this 997, aren´t you tempted to acquire such a car? I guess it would after all be a car that one might keep for a significant time. I just cannot see you do the same with that particular Cayman.

Yes, that would be great, DC - let me know once you decided on the exact time schedule. Smiley As for the 997: I second what Ferdie said Smiley Go for it Smiley  I' still love the design of the 997.  @ Ferdie: just started to work myself through the options djungle Smiley The car will be primarily her daily driver which may suggest to skip some of the driving dynamic options.  But then I'm thinking: heck, it's a Porsche....Smiley

@ sfo: the german pricelist does not suggest that the oil temp / oil pressure function would only come with the PCM Smiley You could be right with the PDC.

So wait your Porsche booth tech guy sort of hinted at a 981 Turbo being considered?? That is very good news.

BTW, nice detailed observations on the interior. I have yet to examine it myself, but your points seem to make a lot of sense. This new Boxster is very well done. Perhaps my first used one in a couple of years with baby blue foil or something. Thanks for the pics!

    Hi Ferdie & PJ

You would be spot on with regards to the Cayman, which I have not tried to hide the fact we are not too happy with it (the ride is way too hard without PASM for SWMBO - especially on the UK's broken roads) and I'd love a 997. The problem is she retires in less than six years and me two years after that and are reluctant to throw significant amounts of cash at expensive cars any more. More thinking to do!! Might contact the dealer and find out what the actual cost to change would be. Smiley

@PJ - son in law is off in April for a seven month deployment to Afghanistan (not good - a lot of worry for the family again) and mid deployment will get a couple of weeks R&R leave,  which he won't know for until much nearer the time. Will let you know soonest. Smiley Smiley
