    new 991 based Ruf models

am pleasantly surprised with Ruf's new models.

their V8 motor in the 991-based RGT8 must make for an interesting drive, and the 630HP PDK Turbo in the 991-based RT35 continues the theme set by the RT12, wherein Ruf introduced a turbo model before Porsche's "official" 911 Turbo.

at 3.8L and PDK, it seems the RT35 uses the 997.2's DFI motor.

it would have been interesting if they did a 991 based wide body car, but using the old Mezger engine in say, 700hp tune.  that way you get the best of both worlds-- the new platform, but with the tried and tested GT1 block.  of course it would be in manual not PDK, but i'm sure there would be interest in such a combination (991 + Mezger block).

Re: new 991 based Ruf models

Here is my take on RUF: I love RUF, no doubt about it. Alois and his wife love cars and it shows. I know them both personally (and not only from shaking hands ) and they are decent and very pleasant people.

That said, I love everything RUF does with the 911 up to one point: The engines. The 6-cyl. boxer turbo engines are masterpieces, very fast, very reliable and typical Porsche. I can't see myself in a 911 with a V8, sorry about that. I love the sound of my C63 AMG Coupe, pure aural sex  but I can't see that happen in a...911. I just can't.

I don't know why RUF is doing this, maybe it has to do with future emissions standards or whatever, maybe he wants to prove a point, I just don't get it. I love the RUF boxer engines, powerful, loud and fast. Everything else...well... angry

On the other hand I am disappointed with the lack of RUF mods for the Cayenne and Panamera. RUF has actually ignored these two bestsellers for a while and I don't think this was a wise decision. Just my personal opinion.

like you, i have spent some time with Alois and Estonia, and agree they are very passionate about cars.

i don't know this for a fact, but I will throw this out as my guess as to why they have pursued the V8, as well as gone into things like the CTR3, which has polarized opinions.

in the 80's, Ruf were masters of speed; we saw this with the Yellowbird obviously, and that's what put them on the map.  But as time went on, others caught up and then surpassed them for outright speed.  the RT12 was still pretty quick back in '06, but very soon after, other tuners were at much higher power levels, and then cars like the GTR and turbo Gallardos came, and it was game over.

I think Ruf saw this coming; not just that other tuners would build faster cars, but that there would be extreme competition for tuned 911's (i know Ruf is technically a manufacturer, not a tuner, but they built their reputation on tuned 911's, and continue to derive the bulk of their business from such products).  so it was a basic question of how to differentiate oneself from the rest.

one way would be to build their own car.

from what i know, they tried to do this, but realized it was much harder than they initially thought.  so the CTR3 was a "halfway step" to doing this.  it was not a complete from the ground up design, but it was still a unique car.

another way would be to build their own engine.

and this is what they have done with the V8.  and if the motor proves to be as good as promised, there is a good potential ancillary business from selling crate engines for installation in other platforms.

as I said, the above is not something Alois or Estonia told me.  its my take on why they may have made these decisions.  of course if someone knows for a fact the real reason, please share! :)

    cheers!

Now that's the most hideous 991 kit I have seen yet enlightened

Re: new 991 based Ruf models

The little extra air inlet in the front beneath the DRL-lights looks so much better and correct this obvious styling flaw of the 991. Other than that, I don't like the RUF kit too much.

RUF seemed to have listened to those people disappointed that you can't see the engine in the 991.

That yellow one looks pretty damn nice I gotta say! Almost very modest for RUF and very classy. Imagine this in baby blue OMG no

RC - I think the Flat-6 is fine for the less powerful normally aspirarted versions (and the very powerful turbo versions).  But, for the GT3 versions where you want to have very high output normally aspirated versions, I think the Flat-6 has just about maximized the format already.

To continue to make more naturally aspirated power, higher revs and displacement are required.  When each cylinder approaches 700cc and 9,000 rpm this does not make much sense.  8 smaller cylinders is much more effective for this application (Flat-8 would be my preference over v8 though).

The 9A1 was designed to be modular, with Flat-4 and Flat-8 versions easily possible.  I think most GT3 buyers were willing to pay the premium for a race-tested Mezer motor, while the Carreras were sold with a less serious motor.

In the 991, I think it would make perfect sense to offer the GT3 customers a Flat-8 9A1 motor, rather than just a tuned Carrera motor.  Adding Titanium conrods, an improved oiling arrangement (if necessary), and individual throttles on each cylinder (please do it, Porsche) would be perfect, imo.

Guys, do you know for how many years Porsche had to listen to those who claim that the flat six engine is at it's power peak ? Look at the GT3 RS 4.0 engine and tell me: Is it ?

That's my whole point - we're at 500hp now.  How do we get to 600hp (a mere 20% increase) without compromising longevity and reliability?  600hp, 4.7L and 9,000rpm in a Flat-6 is very hard on the components, but easily done with 8-cyl.  I'm not saying it's impossible with Flat-6, but it is a compromise for sure (and it is going to break or wear out earlier).

I like the fact that there's no big wing at the rear, although it's a Turbo. kiss

Also the front spoiler with the additional air inlet looks way better than the OEM-part (said that before).

Is the 630/825 powerkit also available for the 997?

I assume it's similar to "Leistungssteigerung 2" here.
10hp less then on the RT35. Assuming that the base has 700Nm, the 170Nm added by the kit would result in 870NmSmiley

That green car in silver would look Amazing! I love the look. And the placement of the side intakes for the turbo is great.

Love the aesthetic execution of the RUF.!

In Holland it is not very common to change parts for non-standard ones, but I can imagine that in cultures where it is more common to do so, a lot of people will like the RUF!
