If it meant faster average lap times ( or keeping that job) , a racer would be have no problem steering, braking ,shifting and accelerating with nothing more than a 100% electronic video game -like joystick  from the drivers seat, so take statements like Herr

Achleitner 's (as coached by marketing department)  at face value.

    Boxster Coupe GTS:

Porsche 991 GT3 and GT2 may have Eight-Cylinder Boxer Engine...

    (18 February 2012)

Porsche will release the GT3 version of the new 991 within a year - and now the rumour is that boxer six engine is replaced with an eight cylinder boxer engine that may allow cylinder shutdown. According to the sources of Auto Motor & Sport should also reduce the manual transmission is replaced with PDK or a robotised gearbox...

Rumour for the next Porsche 911 GT3 and GT2 is huge. Triple Turbo GT2 or not? Manual, PDK or robotised gearbox? Eight cylinder boxer engine or boxer six? And also electric steering from 991 Carrera?

After the launch of the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S are of course more versions. The GT3 model will be launched in 2013 and Porsche are currently considering whether to get a manual or an automatic gearbox. Project Manager for the Porsche 911, August Achleitner, tells "Inside Line" that only one transmission will be offered. Only 30 percent of the 911 buyers choose manual transmission.

"When we launched the 911 Turbo S, we offered no manual transmission, but we have not received a single complaint," he tells Inside Line.

While claiming one of our reliable sources that the decision on PDK gearbox in the GT3, GT2 and GT2 RS is really not at all. Porsche has a strong focus on reducing weight, and not only increase the peak. The PDK gearbox increases the weight by over 50 pounds. The 7-speed manual box from the 991 Carrera, or a robotised gearbox is much easier -- Lamborghini chose such robot box at the development of the Aventador.

Here are thinking Porsche to install an eight-cylinder boxer engine in the new GT3 model. And it fits, according to our source. To provide four liters, six cylinders require very large piston diameter. The move to eight cylinders with smaller piston diameter means that the length need not increase as much.

There is more news for Porsche enthusiasts to react to...

A reliable source reported to Auto Motor & Sport that Porsche developed an eight-cylinder prototype engine with four cylinders in the middle that can be turned off to save fuel and, in particular reducing emissions. Cylinder shutdown process will work much like the V8 engines sitting in the Audi S6 / S7 / S8 and Mercedes AMG models.

The current, "old" GT2 engine must have a large fan that blows out fresh air in the exhaust pipe to get the right issues. Without the system, the engine would not pass environmental certification. With eight cylinders and cylinder shut-off increases the chances of getting a cleaner engine that meets the EU requirements. The decision whether there will be eight or six cylinders in the boxer engine is not time yet.

Previously, we reported also that the upcoming Porsche 911 Turbo can get triple turbo to increase power. However, this is contrary to Porsche objective to reduce the weight instead of increasing the peak power. Clearly, the Turbo model gets two turbos, as in 997-model, but soon, the aggregates are placed in front of the drive shafts - that is usually under the rear seat.

It is not yet known whether the system of turbochargers in front of the drive shaft end up on the Turbo model only, or the monster model GT2. The location would provide better weight distribution and thus a balance approaching a mid-engine, but the question is whether the typical rear-engined 911-balance would be lost?

Electromechanical steering from 991 Carrera to end up probably in GT3 model.
Project manager defends the system to the "just remove the steering feel you do not need."

To further improve the balance Porsche working on a gearbox using the gear to extend the distance between the center of the ring gear (differential) and the socket for the axle shafts. Then the motor can move further towards the center and the car gets a better weight distribution.

And it does not stop there: August Achleitner confirms that even the GT3 and GT2 versions, the new electromechanical steering of the 991 Carrera, which received some criticism because the feeling is not quite match the steering feel of its predecessor, 997 model.

"The new system only removes feedback that you do not need. All of our racers prefer electromechanical," he says.

While the engineers at Weissach are looking at the possibility of installing an eight-cylinder engine in the Porsche 991 GT3 / RS maybe Andreas Preuninger would like to try the naturally-aspirated high-revving MR6 motorsport V8 engine from the RS Spyder...

...which will also be the basis for the engine in the 918 RS Spyder and the 918 RSR...

    Porsche-918-Spyder-engine.jpg

...the naturally aspirated engine from the RS Spyder would be an awesome engine for the Porsche 991 GT3 / RS and a great way to position the 991 GT3 RSR to win the GT class at Le Mans! Smiley

    Spied: 2013 Porsche 911 GT3...

    (23 February 2012)

More than any other carmaker, Porsche knows how to play the game of derivatives and special editions. The 911—which currently includes the 997 and its successor, the 991—comes in 18 variations here; in Germany, that number is 22. This rear-engined sports car is quite rightfully considered the quintessential Porsche. But what’s the quintessential 911? Some would say it’s the base 911 Carrera or perhaps the 911 Carrera S. Others would propose the monster 911 Turbo or its ultra-powerful GT2 derivative. Purists, however, have another favorite: the 911 GT3, which is extremely lightweight, packs a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, and is created for the racetrack.

Count us among the purists. We’ve enjoyed every GT3 so far—we love its manual transmission, its singing boxer engine, and its deliberate lack of heavy and only semi-helpful electronic gadgets. In any other 911, there could be a pretender or a showoff behind the wheel. Not in the GT3; this car challenges its driver.

And so we’re happy to report that the great GT3 story is certain to continue. Our spy photographers have caught semi-camouflaged prototypes in northern Sweden, with photos revealing a 991 with extra-large (and presumably extra-light) wheels, a large rear spoiler (this one appears to be retractable as opposed to the last GT3′s fixed downforce device), and central exhaust outlets. The series-production model will have a specific front fascia as well.

In true 911 evolution style, the new GT3 should solidly beat the car it replaces. It’s expected to be significantly lighter than the last model, with a longer wheelbase and engine output approaching 500 hp. Racing versions are sure to follow. And as has been the case in the past, the next 911 GT3 will be more expensive than the Carrera S but significantly cheaper than the upcoming 911 Turbo. Chances are it will remain the favorite 911 of many purists.

    Those brake rotors look gigantic!

A flat 8 makes sense. Shorter stroke, faster revving, more power and higher redline.

The new GT3 will likely be the automobile culture's death signal for manual transmissions in sports cars. As efficient as PDK is, there is something to be said for driver interaction on a more physical level. Maybe in the decades ahead Google will just drive the car for you.

they are propbaly just testing chasis and/or engine on this mule so they haven't added the wing on it, if you look closely it doesn't have the aerokit front fascia either, just the normal Carrera fascia, nor the front hood vents, etc... the outside was left pretty much as a Carrera which explains the lack if GT3 wing yet.

I agree.  There are aftermarket kits now to expand a GT3 motor to 4.3L but that is over 700cc per cylinder and it certainly is not optimal for high revs with maximum reliability and longevity (not to mention power).  A Flat-8 would give much better performance in these areas for  a similar displacement (or higher).

Wouldn't an adjustable wing make sense, in general, for a GT3, because of it's flexibility?  Fixed wing might make sense if you're only driving at a specific speed range on a track.  Maybe it's a weight issue?

Seems like these are pre-production. They also look light too. Porsche mules usually run miss matching rims and commonly they're 15 spoke up front and the same or different in the rear.

Besides weight I think aerodinamic also may play a role since they may not get the needed aerodinamic efficiency/downforce they need on a GT3 from just an adjustable spoiler and they may need an actual wing. And the wing also gives it a different look from the other regular 991 variants, so there is probably a lot of marketing involved as well.
