Porsche are gaining new customers with this type of expansion, no one is blind to that,  but they are losing their core values and their soul. They could have been the jewel in VW Group's crown whereas they are being converted into an internal rival for up-market Audis.

Yes, I see this too. A shame really.

Imagine how much more profit FIAT could have made if they similarly expanded Ferrari into a Lancia/Alfa Romeo clone. But apparently they respect tradition and value elements like charisma and magic and they are not short-sighted cynics.

Yes, there are some lessons to be learned, but I suspect sales & profit are the main talking points at VAG . Business is looking good....for now.

I think a stylish Macan Turbo that handles well would be much more in line with Porsche's identity then a Cayenne Diesel with ugly tail lights.

Every Porsche should be as fast as comparable high end models of Audi (S/RS), BMW (M) and Co and they should handle better then any other model in their class.

To me the problem arises when Porsche competes with run of the mill models as this means that a badge like (BMW) M actually becomes more exclusive then the Porsche badge.

You have a good point but to financially justify the development of these new models, Porsche have to go down low with ordinary entry level models e.g. weak engines for the vehicle size like  diesel V6 and petrol  V6 in Cayenne and Panamera, copies of VW Touareg hybrid systems and in the new Macan most probably versions of 4C TDI and TFSI.

If I wanted a V6 3.0lt  turbodiesel why would I buy Porsche and spend more? For the name?  BMW, VW and Mercedes do excellent cars in this category. You don't buy a 3.0 lt turbodiesel SUV for its theoretical lap time, anyway.

Well, you wouldn't since you're  'educated'! Smiley But you're in minority my friend! Today's world is all about badge snobbery and excessive spending. Status is the main concern for many people, and Porsche is giving them exactly what they want! For the target group they aim, 5K EUR is nothing if that's gonna give them envious look from other people.

Makes perfect sense but as a buyer I'm interested in a badge that starts where the S/M models end. If Porsche is no longer that brand I wonder if someone else will fill that niche eventually.

Maybe Lamborghini could fill that role and Bugatti becomes the only brand that exclusively caters to the UHNW market?

The day will come soon when we will see a Porsche based on the Audi RS3 or the Audi RS6 because such models are potential best sellers and more profitable too, since they could be sold at higher prices because of the Porsche badge.

Yes, Porsche US sales for March were down by 5%, whilst Audi sales were up by 18% for the same period. If this trend keeps up, expect the above to happen sooner rather than later.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Porsche are introducing the 3.0 L Turbo Diesel Cayenne for the first time in USA at the NY Show. Perhaps, they think they can make up the shortfall in sales in this way.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Maybe a Panamera Town Car (or Grand Marquis) would provide the required sales.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

The sales are relatively low in US due to lack of inventories. They stopped selling Boxsters and Caymans since New Year.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Aw shucks! I was looking forward to seeing a Panamera Town Car.1333542096659getmecoat.gif

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

good interview with Porsche NA CEO on Bloomberg. Apart what I said about sales, he confirmed that Porsche had won the role of designing sport car platforms within VW group.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Total deliveries up by 21% on year .

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Probably already confirmed before in this thread, but a Porsche representative at the NYC Auto Show confirmed that correct English pronunciation of Macan is "muh-kahn" with accent on the final syllable...

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

I am not surprized about the US sales numbers. We didn't see the new 991 in the US till February with limited options and color choices. No manual transmission available until this month.  991 Cabs are just arriving in dealerships this month.  Cayenne availability is just starting to get better.  Boxster arrives in June at Dealerships. We won't see Cayenne Diesel until August.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Macan Turbo could be a very interesting car, with a reasonable fuel consumption. But again, the diesel versions will be king in Europe.

Considering how well my Cayenne Diesel goes, I cannot wait to drive  a Macan three litre diesel!

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

According to the "Autocar" (who spoke with Porsche)  Macan should be pronounced Ma-chan, the Indonesian word for tiger. Mispronouncing the word as it is spelt  i.e. Macan instead of Ma-chan changes the meaning to "mouth".

Couldn't Porsche come up with a simpler name? mail

Part of the ordering and delivery process of the new Porsche will be a quick course in the Indonesian language Smiley

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Thanks Reginos, and now I am really confused (not that it matters).  The PCNA PR reprensentative at the NYC Show was very specific, actually correcting my initial pronunciation.  Ma Chan is going to be bungled and bungled by folks the world over...

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Yup, spoke with a collegue's wife about it as well, she's from Indonesia.
When I asked her about the "Mah-kan", she thought I was talking about food. When I told here about that it meant "Tiger", she hesitated a bit, and then said "Do you mean Mah-chan?"...

Aah! I see that the design department is on sabbatical.....again.

Re: "Cajun" is now...MACAN Thread Closed

Too much disguise especially at the rear. The whole of the rear has panels riveted.

I cannot judge at present. but OTOH I don't expect any surprises. It will be a smaller and slimmer version of the Cayenne.

Aah! I see what they are doing! They said "lets take a design from a previous not-so- attractive model and make it smaller. Then lets call it a new model with a odd name". Those clever little people!

Right!  I know what the Pajun is going to look like.
