Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

    KresoF1:

Grant, that is an excellent question. Answer is rather difficult at the moment... It will pretty much depend on new GT3 engine technical design. If it will be a extreme high rev unit a la Ferrari 458 then 7th "power" gear makes sense in very way(because it will mask initial low torque at low revs). BUT, if new GT3 engine will be in its power delivery a la latest 4.0 GT1 block based unit then I do not see true need for 7th "power" gear.

Also, since many GT3 users actually track from time to time their cars pretty long first and second gear may be an advantage on the track. With 7th "power" gear that advantage will be gone since most likely first five gears will be much shorter.

My bet is that new GT3 will use ONLY one gearbox choice-either manual or PDK-S. So, if it is PDK-S chances for 7th "power" gear are 50/50 at the moment.

Interesting about only 1 gearbox - that would make for quite a few unhappy customers (either way).

The reason 7 performance gears would be so beneficial is that it could be great around town (low first gear), great on the track (very closely spaced gears would be a huge help, using mostly 2nd through 6th), and top speed would happen in 7th gear at peak engine power.

The current GT3 (even 4.0) is not optimally geared for the track - large gaps between gears (especially 2nd to 3rd) and 2nd is too tall for some very slow corners (and first too low).

Porsche would never hear the end of it if they didn't offer a manual box on the 991 GT3.

I agree.  If they only offer one gearbox choice per model, then I would guess GT3 would have manual and GT3RS would have PDK-S.  But, I would think there would be a pretty sizable group that would want the opposite as well.

That seems possible, and I agree with you. I think the chance of a PDK-S is extremely high, because the Mezger is being dropped for the 9A1 engine, which is already very compatible with PDK. I think what will end up happening is both the GT3 and GT3 RS will be standard with a 7 speed manual, and an optional PDK-S. I think one of the main reasons it might take a long time for the next GT3 isn't making PDK-S work, but making the 9A1 a suitable engine to reach ultra-high revs, and withstand extreme endurance. I think once they have that sorted out, the 991 GT3 will be ready to dominate on racetracks around the world.

    None frankly.

458 GT2 and GT3 are very accomplished racers.

Not 991 racing car planned for 2012, so Porsche will HAVE to deliver for the 2013!!!!

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

Okay, so more than likely, we'll see the 991 Cup Car in time for the 2013 season. It could race in things like Grand Am, and the Carrera Cup Challenges around the world. But I bet we'll have to wait until 2014 until the RSR, considering just how astonishing the new RSR is. I would imagine they would run that car for at least two seasons with minor tweaks in between. Also in 2014 is the new P1 car, so I assume the 2014 24 hours of Le Mans is going to be very exciting.

I thought Mr. Kristensen said 991 RSR will be ready for 2013?

Easy does it. This "interim" version of the RSR has not raced yet, so we don't know how its going to shape up against the opposition.

This "current" edition of the RSR remains based on the 997 , but with wider front track (a la 991) and I am sure some other new parts. I prefer to think of it as a "interim" car.

As for 2014: I  think the introduction of a new 991 GT3 RSR in the same year that Porsche launches it's LMP1 project may be a stretch for the Motorsport department. It's doable, but if I had the choice, I would not launch two separate racing models in the same year.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

I guess all we can do is wait. And Porsche typically does have surprises around the corner, so I'm sure we're gonna be in for a great next few years in Porsche motorsport.

May I ask an off-topic question of any of our German-speaking Rennteamers?  Why do the German magazines refer to new, camouflaged cars by using the term "erlkoenig"?  (sorry, can't do an umlaut on my English-speaking keyboard).  I remember reading a famous prose poem by Goethe called Der Erlkoenig when I did German at school (many years ago), but I can't imagine what this has to do with cars.  Smiley

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

    Pureblue,
Though German is not my native tongue, I'd like to shed some light on this.
It refers to the poem by Von Goethe, "Der Erlkönig" (the elf king).

The poem starts with the following phrase:
"Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?" (Who rides, so late, through night and wind?), and therefore journalists from Auto, Motor und Sport therefore started referring to the camouflaged prototypes as to "Erlkönige".
If I recall correctly, they wrote an article about a camouflaged mercedes, and did that by making an adapted version of the original poem by Von Goethe.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

Jep, its a ballade of Goethe. The "Erlkönig" is something like a ghost, riding as a phenomenon through night and wind inside the forrest. He´s not to catch, he´s not real. So thats, what carcompanies think (or hope) of there camouflaged cars.  :-))

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

Joost and Georg, thanks for explaining.  So it is, in fact, related to the poem by Von Goethe - fascinating.  Smiley

This was one of the first 901-Erlkönig pics from Porsche in the 60th - the car had the nickname: Fledermaus = Bat.

As today some of the Erlkönig-pics were given directly from Porsche to the press.
