Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

I bet when he's talking about the flat 8, I think he's hinting at the speculated 960 supercar. LastI heard from autocar that car will have a flat 8, and come with the updated PDK. They also said it could feature a further development of the Carrera GT's manual transmission.

..but surely a "new" car (960) would'nt have "room issues" for a flat 8. It would be designed to take that engine from the start.

Zurich intro of the 991 is 1st of Dec - anybody there ?

Very positive - but realistic - review from someone who seems to know what he's talking about.  Realistic in the sense that he:

    *  acknowledges that some of the characteristics which made classic 911s such exceptional cars to drive are forever gone,

    *  but welcomes the change because the 991 is an all-round better car and because "you can't stop progress".

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    A very good read! Thanks.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

The guy is very experienced car journalist from States and his opinion has some weight behind it. He could be very harsh critic sometimes so it's very flattering for Porsche (and us, I guess :)) to receive his accolades....

You're probably right, but Hatz was talking about the transmission being able to fit the flat 8, not the 911.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Not my take on it .

He says that a flat-8 will fit, but in the context of the gearbox "leaving enough room for more cylinders".

Anyhow - It's all symantics at this point in time.

I would'nt be at all surprised if they do come up with a flat 8 for the RS version (this has been a long standing rumor in the sportcar racing comunity). It all depends on the  evolution of the competition and the rules.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

From Di Lorenzo's review: "But the moment you put your foot in it and drive it with purpose, it transforms into something much more akin to one of the factory’s 911 GT3 RS racers."

    Love that!

I like how Wolfgang Hatz, executive vice president of research and design said that with the new transmissions a Flat-8 WILL fit, not, MAY fit!

    5.0 ltr. Flat-8 GT3 RS with 600 bhp anyone? (3.8 / 6 * 8 & 450bhp bumped by the same increase in volume...)

If it comes, it will most likely be a 4.5L. This will put on par with the 458 (for GTE) and so (in theory) will have the same air restrictors.

which would put it at between 532-562 bhp (450 for the 3.8RS & 500 for the 4.0RS). That would make sense, 540-550ish bhp for the top of the line normally asperated 991 and the ability to make a larger bore/stroke 5-5.2 ltr Flat-8 for a new model between the 991 & 918 with something around 600-650 bhp.

    Hi Mithras,

What an honour to have a former Porsche Club president here..Smiley..

However, I think you have a fundamental - and anybody else - believing in an 8 Cylinder Engine: Porsche needs to get by around 2016 close to 180 - if possible - more to 150CO2 per km. If you think that can be done with a V8 600HP..dream on..

In fact, the 4 cylinder coming back for the boxster is given this challenge - the only viable option. I know its a different car but the law doesnt change..Smiley

    Carlos from Spain:
    Grant:

Carlos, I have read at least 5 reviews that say the steering is a problem.  I pray that they go back to hydraulic for the GT cars.  I already thought the 997.2 Carrera steering was getting numb, but this is a much bigger issue now.

Exactly, it becoming a comom theme in the first reviews. I absolutely love the steering of my 997.1-20mm, its direct, kart-like, weighed on the heavy side, and very quick responding with no lag whatsoever from 12 o'clock and viceversa, its very quick to tell you every little movement of the car, the weight trasnfer's, the rubbing of the tires with the asfalt as you approach the limit, the telegraphing of the yaw of the car in the corners by the weight its giving you, etc. Its an absolute joy that I still admire.

Some say that is too nervous? its the opposite for me, numbness is what makes me nervous. Every other 997 I have tested was still good but not the same already (997.1 PASM was so-so, 997.2 PASM got worse, 997TT got even worse, etc), though I have not tested a 997GT3 which I suppose its even better than my 997S.1-20mm.

I cannot wait to test the 991 and see for myself if its just pre-release reporters clitches as they copy each other, or if its indeed true Smiley If its worse than any 997 the we have a problem. I understand though that it may not be the same for everyone, I realise I may be a bit on the anal side about a car's steering and others may not give it that much importance, so it may be a problem only for a few.

    --

    Hi Carlos,

I had the 997.1 with sport suspension - like you - then I upgraded to GT3..and GT2. Is there a difference?hmm..very little. True is that with a GT3 you will feel every little stone your touching - but thats exactly what people (I) want..+ its derived from a race car. I have driven all 997 GT versions - except for the 4.0 GT3. There is a difference in MKI GT3 and GT3 MKII..but less on the steering - in fact there is almost no difference in steering. The MKII GT3 is however less nervous..arguments that the 997 is nervous at 140mph are wrong according to me - there are huge diffenerences accoring to which 997 you drive. the MKII gt3 drives a 240kmh like a rolls royce..not unstable at all. I also drove the GT2RS a few days ago...I bet you this thing is much calmer at 290 than a 991..

Oh yes, for me 997 steering is perfect...and besides, I dont understand why everybody is hurrying to buy a 991..it has many new features - and apparent flaws- that will probably in the beginning have its problems. I would (if I would buy one) wait for the Facelift version..- why this "force"..?

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    KresoF1:

First tests for German mags are already done. Next week is full test in German AMS, week after that test in German Sport Auto with Hockenheim track time(it is that brown 991 S with PDCC/-20mm). Hint-very, very good results.

About AMS: thats the worst car magazine ever...these are just "payed" journalists..their website is funded by car manufacturers..one slight negative comment and no more commercials from the manfacturers..simple as that. AMS doesnt write anything "critical anymore"..except for US, and Italian cars - by whom they receive little or 0 funding.

Anyway, Sport Auto is much better..will Sport Auto use the 991 version with the PDCC? Regarding your hint..when you say:" very very good results"..compared to what? If I would use the words: "very very good results"..I would be talkig about Mclaren or GT2RS level..Smiley

PS: Sport Auto will also test the 991S on the ring..Im curios to see what the wet - times will be ...if the wet times are worse thann GT3 times then the times are clearly falsified..there has been a rumour in another forum that the 991 Pirellis are trained for high performance on the dry...but cripple in the wet..

Lets see..7:40 is for me not official until confirmed by independent source..for the 997 GT2RS Porsche claimed 7:18..the rest is known (history)..

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Porsche (& soon piggybacking on VW) will sell a lot more small dispacement engines than large ones. Flat 4 Boxsters and more mass market 550 type small Porsches ill weight the average CO2 down which will allow niche big engine cars.

Building 500 flat-8's which allow you to go racing with them is a small small drop in the bucket when by 2016 you are probably building 15,000+ efficient flat-4 cars.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

fully correct what you say..but still..such an engine will unnecessarily worsen the balance..

Besides, why do it when you have 6 cylinders also developing 550HP....new 991 turbo?Smiley

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

A modern 8 cylinder engine can be very light indeed.

You cant race with a turbo. ( current rules are unfavorable to turbo's) . Selling race ready 911's to customers is the backbone of Porsche's profitable motorsport business.

Compared to cars with similar specs which is what matters. He means very very good results relative to its specs (engine power, weight, etc) and  not in absolute NRing lap time terms.

OK..Smiley..so lets see where we will end up..any idea where that will be ?..7:40 has been mentioned by Porsche (however with the words: .."our best lap with the 991S in internal testing was a 7:40")..they also said 7:18 for GT2RS and 7.27 for 4.0..the average deviation compared to the sport auto real result is/was 4,5 sec. if this logic holds for the 991 also we will be at 7:44..any bets?..

But in a few weeks we will know the result..unless somebody has some pre-informationSmiley
