    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

    RC:

Just talked to a "friend". It is not the Cab. The Cab will be announced early next year. This isn't 100% though since this "friend" doesn't work in the marketing department and he refused to give me any hint, so he knows exactly or he doesn't have a clue (which would be odd though).

Eh, thanks for that information. Smiley

    This is exciting!

Could be anyting though, so many models coming onstream soon, Boxster, Cayman, Cajun.

Could even be the final version of the 918? With the new exhaust system, mirrors, etc

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

Here's some food for thought (not really related to the L.A. auto show though):

Why doesn't Porsche offer a nice GT Coupe ? A Panamera Coupe would be perfect.

The background: We were exiting a steakhouse in Miami and a gorgeous blonde just entered a beautiful black Bentley GT Speed (I think) in the valet parking area. The car looked stunning (some sort of matte black with black wheels) and my wife immediately fell in love with this car. She asked me now why Porsche doesn't offer a true GT Coupe with lots of interior room, including the back and two doors only.

Good question: Why doesn't Porsche offer a 928 successor? It would make a lot of sense.

    Mercedes CL...BMW 6 series...where is Porsche ???

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

    All-new Porsche 928 planned...

    (13 July 2011)

A two-door, front-engined Porsche GT coupé is being planned as part of the second-generation Porsche Panamera family, highly placed sources have told Autocar.

The model is pencilled in for launch after the replacement for the Panamera four-door, scheduled for 2014/15.

Porsche is planning the new two-door GT on a short-chassis version of the next Panamera’s underpinnings. It will attempt to capture the magic of the 928 coupé from the late 1970s.

A new Porsche 928 — possibly badged 929 — would give Porsche entry to a sector that has grown to over 10,000 sales a year, thanks to models like the Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental and Ferrari California.

Porsche is understood to be planning two variants of the 929: a coupé and a soft-top convertible.

The 929’s styling is a closely guarded secret, although these images from Julliana Cho, a Porsche-sponsored student who has just graduated from the vehicle design course at the Royal College of Art, might give some clues to the themes being developed inside Porsche under design boss Michael Mauer. They show a more geometric design language with a much stronger-looking front end.

However, any widening of the Panamera line-up depends on Porsche significantly expanding build capacity, said our source.

“At the moment, derivatives of the Panamera are not planned for the first generation,” said the insider. “We hope to add them to the second generation, provided we can find necessary capacity.”

Porsche has announced a major investment programme at its Leipzig plant in Germany, where the Cayenne is produced, which will increase capacity.

Principally, there’s a new body assembly line to build the new Cajun compact SUV but it could also allow Porsche to switch production of the Panamera body from Volkswagen’s Hannover facility to Leipzig for the second-generation model.

In turn, that gives Porsche the flexibility to spin body derivatives off the Panamera. As a result, a third derivative — a sporty estate in the mould of the Mercedes CLS wagon due in 2012/13 — is possible.

“We have ideas to extend the Panamera line-up, including other body derivatives — a shooting brake, for example,” said our source.

There must also be a strong chance that work on the new Panamera platform will be shared with VW stablemate Bentley for its third-generation Continental and Flying Spur.

Former Porsche boss Wolfgang Durheimer is now boss of Bentley and is weighing up a third model in Bentley’s line-up. A sporty CLS-type saloon would be one option.

New Porsche boss Matthias Muller last year told Autocar that Porsche and Bentley should share platforms to reduce costs.

In which case they're not launching it at this LA show.

Of course there will be a Panamera Coupe but it just takes too long to put it on the market, which is sad.

No, it won't look that spectacular...

I believe they stole the name idea 929 from me but what gives..

A 928 GTS successor would be just fantastic, hopefully it'll have the same stunning performance specs.

I think it's impossible that we see the targa before we see the cab.

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

CEO Mathias Mueller obviously told the press today, that a sub-level (boxster) sportscar has not been given the green light yet. So, there is no "550-James Dean-whatever"-world premiere ahead...two days to go...

I hate Porsche and their secrets....today the very same friend who told me that the Cab isn't "it", told me that several 991 Cabs have been shipped to the West Coast recently. He didn't have a clue if they were test cars or show cars but maybe it is the Cab, even if I still doubt it.

My bet is on the 550 or the GTS (Cayenne or Panamera).

Porsche Works Driver - Jorg Bergmeister is in LA. So perhaps Porsche is planning one of their driving events with Jorg for the 991 Cab.

There can't  be a 928 anymore,  because a defining point in the 928 design was the rear transaxle which Porsche stopped using.

If you mean a 2 door GT coupe this will come with the second version of the Panamera which is some 6 years away.

It wouldn't make any sense to present the Cab in L.A. but Porsche has acted pretty irrational (judging by their past) lately, so I would expect anything. I still suspect the 550 or the next gen Boxster but nothing can be excluded. The Panamera and/or Cayenne GTS are also due soon, so this is another possibility.

    Soon... Smiley

Don't hold your breath too long for the 550. Haven't you read about just yesterday that the prospects are very slim for it to happen (at least not soon)...

SO: either 991 Cab, but more likely a new Boxster...

Porsche has a prototype (in Boxster disguise) ready, no matter what they tell the public. Apparently Porsche didn't get the support from VW they have hoped for and currently, the Cayenne and Panamera seem to sell pretty well, so I suppose Porsche has more faith in the Cajun than in the 550, which is understandable. Smiley They can always offer a cheaper entry level Boxster model instead of the 550, if they want to.

I really don't have a clue what model Porsche will show in L.A. but judging by the description, Porsche created a lot of hype which may not be satisfied. Sometimes it is better to keep a low profile and surprise people... Smiley

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

They may have it but it would be a way to early to show it now if they plan for it to be out in 5 years only...

Anyways, I am a bit surprised about they announcment for LA show since it's always been a sort of interim event before Detroit. The question is: what's in store for Detroit then, if this gonna be a major introduction? That's why I'm more inclined to believe in the 991 Cab story than in anything else..

    But - who knows!

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

If I remember correctly, didn't Matthias Mueller say that he was reorganizing Porsche's product cycle so that they would have one "large" event per year and two or three other smaller events during the year.

If we consider that the launch of the 991 was the "big" event this year, then this "mystery" launch will not be earth shattering (it will be one of the "smaller" events)

    Re: Los Angeles Porsche launch

I was reading an interview with Wolfgang Hatz, PAG Board of Management member in charge of R&D. He said that there is a great desire within the VW Group for a small sportscar (vide new "550" model). But Porsche won't concur unless it's true to their values, i.e. no VW clone. He stessed that they won't do a VW-Porsche again, alluding to the 914 I believe.

Therefore, there is nothing definite for the sub-Boxster roadster, as yet.
