Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Having enjoyed my Carrera 997.2 GTS for 10 months, I can't wait to see what the Carrera 991 GTS will bring...

I'll be among the first to order a 991.2 Carrera GTS.  Any guesses as to which MY year that is likely to be..

Thanks pjd, the car just looks soo much better than the 997, it looks wider and more aggressive. I'm loving the new front bumper and i can't wait to see it in real life. I live in Australia and my dealer said it won't be coming here until March mail

The Nissan gtr looks crap next to it. The new interior is just awesome and it definitely has't lost the sporty feel ♥♥♥

The GTR have a typical japanese styling (not saying that is bad). And not the same quality as a Porsche.

I drove a 2010 GTR (480 hp) last year and the car is a "weapon" (real precise and great engine)... can`t imagine how will it be the 2012 version (560 hp)... Autocar claims 2.8 sec. from 0-60mph.... that says very much...

On the other way, lap times and hp it`s not all on a sports car, at least for me... it`s what you can extract from each hp and the pleasure that you have with car... that`s why i´m also (very) curious to see the "feedback" from the new Subaru BRZ and Toyota FT-86...

I totally agree with you! Sports cars aren't all about the numbers. That's one of the reasons the 911 Turbo would be my last variant of choice. Fantastic car in all realms, it could even be deemed as the king. But that's only on paper. The whole purpose of a sportscar is to transfer all of the information the road has into your hands for the purpose of pleasure.

Because let's face it, you're never going to be able to go to 60 on public roads, but you are ALWAYS going to be driving. Therfore the absolute most important thing in any sportscar is driving pleasure. Porsche recognizes this and offers all of the 911 models, but they also recognize performance is very important, so they dedicate a model specifically too it.

Nissan, however, it seems all they care about is getting the lowest Nordschleife and 0-60 time as physically possible, no matter the costs. It really makes you think... Who cares anymore?

I'm also very intrigued by the new FT-86. I'm not particularly a fan of the bloated design, but I'm in love with the idea and philosophy behind the car. Low weight, great feedback, RWD, manual, and sufficient power. The perfect interpretation of the sportscar.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Hey pjd, I just read in the description of the video that it says a Cayenne drove in front of it on the track to film it... And "S VM 911" is a typical Porsche liscense plate, so, we could be due for some exciting content soon.

My guess is that if its not towards the end of the life cycle of the 991 again, at least it won't be until the Mk-II appears, simply because the GTS is a card they play to help boost sales and they waste that effect if they use it too soon.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    Joost:

    Wel, it says:
"the Porsche press conference ... will put the spotlight fair and square on the debut of the new 911 Carrera on the American continent and on the world premiere of a model boasting impressive performance and dynamic looks, exuding unadulterated driving pleasure."

    Later, they say:
"The rest of Porsche’s show programme is no less attractive either. Visitors will be treated to a cross-section of the product portfolio with the hybrid variants of the Panamera and Cayenne ... and the two seater, mid-engine Boxster and Cayman sports cars."

Together suggesting that the new model is not the same as the boxster...
I would not be surprised if this "new model" would be a boxster R, or a boxster GTS or something stupid like that. Porsche has done that before; bragging about a new model and then disappoint with some sort of not-so-special-edition.

    I wouldn't hold my breath.

Could it be the GT3 RSR?  Photos have just been released (I saw them on Carbuzz).  If so, it's a 997 so it's the end of the road from the perspective of this thread (it's not a 991!).  There's a separate thread on the LA Launch now anyway, and I've posted my speculative pitch there...

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

...... and we already had Two other threads on the new GT3 RSR

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

My bad - I've deleted the thread.  And I thought they were such nice pictures...

I really get the impression they've worked a lot on making the induction noise enter the cabin in a very pronounced way, I like it!

    311 km/h equals 193 m.p.h.!

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Just picked up the Oct. CAR magazine for reading on a flight... their (passenger seat only) test of the 991 by Kacher, notes that W. Rohrl had difficulty in putting the 991 easily into a small slide.  Achleitner is quoted as saying that "hooligan mode" is no longer part of the car's character the way it was in older 911s.  Kacher writes that the 991 is "a talented carver, but no longer a casual slider".

Still a bit early to make pronouncements until we all drive one ourselves, but it does seem to back up the worry of some on RT that the longer wheelbase, and evolution towards more of a GT car, carries some risk of losing some parts of the 911 character that some owners at least did not want to lose.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

The press launch of the 997 GTS one year ago also took place in CA.  A few weeks ago a substantial amount of new 991 and future models were spotted there for a presumably P.R. stint as reported here.  Porsche surely likes this location very much.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

I went to my local dealer last week. The Jamuary production except to reach HK in April. I were surpried to learn that no one pick the black interior among 15+ order already turned in.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Just had a call from my dealer to say that the aluminium window surround option is now not available to order and he doesn't have a date when it will be crying   That comes on top of the carbon trim and brushed aluminium options also not being made available. How on earth can Porsche get the option availability so badly wrong for the start of production?? These are basic trim items for goodness sake mail

A basic trim for a sportscar should also be PSE....when ordering my 997.2 three years ago, it took Porsche 11 months to deliver the PSE... no joke!

Smiley Worse really as even Ferrari managed to get the carbon fibre trim available from launch on left hand drive cars.

So, at launch, there is no availability here on the basic Carrera model, no carbon trim, no aluminium trim, no sport techno wheels, no aero kit, no deviating stitching.......... I wonder what they'll say we can't have next?

Well, in the very beginning you could not order TPMS, front parking sensors, HiFi, lifting system, rear parking camera, bi-colour paint, just to name a few. But Ferrari is still a far smaller company and compared to the Italians, Porsche is a mass producer, from which you could expect all options available from the start. Smiley
