M division wants its own SLS

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/259703/

It will be great news if such a car is finally signed off.

BMW with all their technology and motorsport pedigree are absent from this segment and BMW fans deserve such a car. I can't wait much longer to see the successor to the 1970s M1.

I cannot understand why BMW cannot make a business case for such model as I'm sure Mercedes and Audi have not been losing money on their SLS and R8 respectively Smiley

The current generation M is just a sad refletion of what it ones was.. it's got NOTHING to do with racing heritage anymore.

BMW watered the M down so much it's now barely above Audis S-Line series yes

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

A return to the old BMW ethos is long overdue

The cars below were special and deserved the M /// logo:

Yes, the first gen M cars were quite amazing and raw.

Just look at today's models.. M3 sedan, M3 cabrio, M5 station wagon heart

Your conclusion is not totally accurate. For example the Porsche GT series road cars are much closer to the GT class racers in  ALMS, LMS, Grand Am, VLN. The M3 racers (in the various competititons)  are totally  removed from the road version of their namesake.

Re: M division wants its own SLS

I don't fully agree that Porsche has watered down to the extend BMW M has either. Porsches still provide pure track performances and racing heritage. The latest GT series are closer than ever to the actual racing series.

Meanwhile BMW brings out an M3 GT with literally just a few plastic bits and a new color mail
The first new 3er M model to be released will be a sedan.....

I've owed both the E30 and E34 M cars and they are true masterpieces.. hand built and very very quick in their own ways.

After the E36, the M series really went a terrible poseur route enlightened

Re: M division wants its own SLS

The annoying thing is that BMW  have a lot of expertise but they are held back by business decisions. The BMW management, it seems , want to turn BMW into a German copy of  Lexus. But then again even Lexus got into the trouble of designing and producing the LFA yes

The M logo used to be for something special and motorsport related. It has become a fashion label now attached to admittedly, very good and fast but not so special cars.

Since BMW only takes part in top echelon motorsports (FIAT GT and from 2012 DTM), it would be really difficult to transfer that kind of technology and ethos to their road cars, unless they went after the supercar manufacturers, which of course they won't! Smiley

We expect them to do something in the concept of the SLS and the R8 and put their ///M badge on that. And race it in a GT3 series or VLN. Their current BMW GT cars share only a slight resemblance with their road cars; even the engine position is different. As to DTM,it is now "sillouette racing" for all participants.

Not just call "M" the top cars of each their existing model range, no matter how good they are in their assigned segment.

For example the AMG SLS is a unique car compared to the AMG C63 which at the top of a range  starting with a humble C180. The SLS has done a lot for Mercedes credibility as performance car manufacturers.

Very clear and simple wish from BMW fans, like myself.

Re: M division wants its own SLS

I wish BMW to build a second generation M1 (didn't like the hommage concept). It is one car I very fondly remember from my childhool. Whatever they do should be an evolution of the original, shouldn't be something totally different.

Actually I have owned E36 M3, E46 M3 (2 of them) and E92M3. E36 was the worst them of all in terms of handling and speciality. I had the EVO version which had 321 hp 3.2 liter inline six. It was a very fast car for its time (second half of 1990s) and at that time the competition from others weren't this much. BUT E36 out of the box, understeers too much, had weak chassie and weak rear subframe. Basic interior features and too much look like the common 3series coupes.

On the other hand E46 was a good improvement in terms of handling and interior quality departments. Moreover, addition of SMGII gearbox was a big success over SMGI of E36. However, this time the improved inline six was not powerfull enough. It had barely 22 more hp than E36 and all this power went to additional weight of E46. Nevertheless, E46 was a better car than E36. Its flared arches, 4 exhaust pipes and powerdome on the bonnet looked very nice compared common E46 coupes. And E46 M3 based CSL was a masterpiece. IMO, it is the BEST M car ever produced. The emotion, feel, sound, design of the car was just right.

However, E92 is in another league in terms of performance and comfort. The biggest problem with the lates M cars are the size and the weight. They are getting fatter and larger as World demands. However, E92 was the only car with neutral handling characteristics out of the box compared to both E36 and E46. DKG transmission with S65 V8 engine is the best engine/transmission combination M ever but in a car.

So ///M is not going backwards. It only loses the path, sometimes  ;)

Re: M division wants its own SLS

Oh common they made 780 E30 M3 convertibles... how many of today's 3er are convertible enlightened

The E46 M3 was a very very nice last attempt inside and out. But still it had nothing to do with the early M cars.

Even the E36 (which is the first terrible plastic modern era car meant to be recycled) is MILES apart from the awesomeness of the E30 M3.

The racing engines in those are so terribly needy. ie. 10 min warm up before each drive etc.

///M isn't going backwards, but it's watered down is all im saying. They're still worthy cars and tons of fun to drive kiss

Again though, it is worrying to see the new 3er come as a sedan M first.

dont think you are going to see M3 coupe this generation.  Will be M4 coupe under the new 4 series line.  dont like it, but thats the info going around

Words from BMW: "Die Geschichte von M Modellen, wie sie heute kennen und lieben, begann - richtig, mit Viertürern."

Ask the instructors at BMW Fahrertraining which E9X they prefer...

Re: M division wants its own SLS

It certainly is time for an M1 successor.

And most "M" cars have become nothing more than Sports + versions of their Sport trim level counterparts and not the true "M" cars of the past.

Re: M division wants its own SLS

I already said this a long time ago. It`s more then time for BMW to have a M1 sucessor...

Re: M division wants its own SLS

The M1 was overweight, had both massive understeer and oversteer, and ridiculous engine parts prices that  BMW factory reps laughed at.  It was a complete loser.

The good things on the BMW M1 was the optional insturments package( all ripped from Porsche 911), the dog leg pattern ZF 5spd gearbox and the Scheel seats.

Re: M division wants its own SLS

To be honest: I don't believe this report is true. During the last years there have been so many rumours about a M1-successor that I don't believe in them anymore.

I am afraid the BMW that will come closest to the original M1 in the next years will be the i8. :S Although I must admit that I hope I am wrong. :S
