that macan has 991 eyebrow running lights - very different than the pictures which have nothing along that upper line of the grill.

BC has been getting hammered with snow so they will have a good go.

That's a Cayenne, the Macan is the covered one on the other side of the X3.

It's based on the next Q5 which won't be smaller than the current Q5 which is the same size as the X3.

Not according to the spy pic with it parked next to X3 and Cayenne. Seems like the Mecan is between the size of a X1 and the current X3.

2013 Porsche 911 Turbo: Latest Spy Shots...

    (14 December 2012)

We'll see the car unveiled in 2013, possibly at Porsche's home event: the Frankfurt motor show in September...

Look closely at the engine air intakes and you'll see that underneath the camo-sticker shaped like the 997's triangular aperture, the 991 will sport a more rounded, smaller opening. We've also got a better look at the revised front bumper and splitter, which sports slightly flared lower lips, like the new Cayman.

At the rear, we see the first outing for the boxy quad tailpipes - previous 911 Turbo mules sported ill-fitting single-section pipes. And the final shape of the wheelarch ducting in the corners of the rear bumper is also visible.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

I am struck by how quiet the turbo is in the gt3/turbo video.  Is that just because I am comparing it to the GT3, or is there something more going on there?  Obviously I am aware that turbos generally are significantly quieter than NA, and the GT3 here may have a sport exhaust, but the turbo engine is almost completely quiet...

I can definitely make out the PDK on the GT3 too.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

Turbos are very quiet - turbocharger is directly in the exhaust path.  I used to run my tuned Evo on the road without a muffler and it was only slightly beyond tasteful - don't try that with a GT3 - ever hear an RSR at the track?

Corrected by the front or rear wheels steering?

Good question. Who knows? Interesting to see how he goes into the corner quite fast. There is very good turn-in at the front of the car (total absence of under-steer), then the rear wants to whip about, but it is immediately controlled and the car is back on track for the rest of the corner. It really is just a touch of over-steer.

It is also possible that the driver provoked the over-steer (rear-end slide) as he may be testing the limits of the car under cornering.

Porsche squares up to Ferrari with new 960

    Porsche-960_Car-Magazine-thumbprint.jpg

Mid-engined, 4wd, eight-cylinder boxer engines: Georg Kacher reveals how the new 960 slots in above 911...

You’re looking at the FeFi, short for Ferrari fighter. It’s Porsche’s first attempt to build a mid-engined sports car aimed at the ‘junior supercar’ market, currently dominated by the Ferrari 458 and more recent McLaren MP4-12C. Those two names may be giants of the genre, but neither is likely to be thrilled at the prospect of Porsche crashing their party.

Project 960 sits neatly between the forthcoming 580bhp 991 Turbo S and the 918 Spyder, complete with 583 V8-supplied bhp and 240 electric ponies.

It’s the first time Porsche has dabbled in this supercar sector: previously it’s stuck with racier 911s or proper top-end exotica such as the 959 and Carrera GT. And there are further reasons why we should all start salivating. Such as its eight-cylinder boxer engine. Or its four-wheel drivetrain and seven-speed PDK twin-clutch transmission. Not to mention its 2.5sec dash from 0-60mph.

It’s a brave move by Porsche, plugging a gap in its range which has let traditional supercar makers, and the likes of Bentley, make hay in the £200k-plus marketplace. Not for much longer.

    THE FLAT EIGHT

Porsche favours a new flat-eight engine for the 960. A development of the trademark six-cylinder boxer, the quad-turbo 3.9 is mounted low down in the spaceframe chassis and features a central take-off which connects to a seven-speed PDK ‘box. CAR understands that VW boss Ferdinand Piech is already running a stealth Cayman fitted with a 4.0-litre B8 prototype. This engine supersedes earlier plans for a 4.8 V8 or 911-related flat six.

    LIGHT WEIGHT

Porsche’s FeFi relies on an aluminium-intensive platform supported by steel, carbon fibre, magnesium, titanium and other composite elements. To ensure light-footed handling and supercar performance, the target weight is in the area of 1400kg. Light, compact and slippery, the 960 will accelerate to 60mph in about 2.5sec.

    IT’S 4WD LIKE THE 959

To control the flat-eight’s 650bhp, the 960 will be four-wheel drive. This adds around 80kg to the kerbweight and is necessary to cope with the instant torque from the quad turbos. Our sources predict we may see a pared-back rear-wheel-drive GT edition later. Porsche’s own mannettino will let drivers flick from mild to wild.

    THE OILY BITS

This will be the first Porsche to be spun from the VW group’s newest box of tricks: the sports car platform called MMB (modular mid-engine architecture). It’ll go on to underpin most of the group’s new sports cars, stretching, in some shape or other, from the replacement Boxster to the next-generation Lambo V12.

    PRICE, AVAILABILITY

See the new Porsche 960 in the metal in late 2016 with production at the Zuffenhausen parent plant slated to begin in February 2017. This is no limited-edition: estimates run at 3000 to 4000 cars a year over a full lifecycle of six years. The new flagship will most likely be priced above €250,000; that’s slap bang in Ferrari 458 and McLaren 12C territory.

The junior supercar party: look who’s already here...

Very interesting - thanks for posting!  I knew a Flat-8 was coming, ever since they said the 9A1 would be modular and the 981 coming with a Flat-4, but never expected Quad-Turbo.  Thought the GT3RS might get Flat-8, maybe still gets a 4.5L version with no turbos and 9k revs.

How reliable is CAR magazine in general and this article specially?

Apart from that, I think there's a niche between the GT2rs and the 918, and I would love Porsche to fill that niche.

Porsche plans to launch Cayman R and Cayman GT3...

"In the past, the Cayman wasn't allowed to outperform the more profitable 911, but this policy is about to change. Since Porsche has learned that there is virtually no overlap between the two clienteles, we are almost certainly going to see another Cayman R, and there's even talk of a GT3 variant, which could compete in its own junior racing series.

At the other end of the scale, the midcycle makeover expected for late 2015 may yield a new entry-level Cayman powered by a more frugal turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine. Also said to be in the works are a seven-speed manual gearbox and a wider choice of operating modes modeled after BMW's driving-experience selector and Ferrari's manettino."

    PORSCHE 911 in 2013: TURBO and GT3...

    (27 December 2012)

The new Turbo arrives here 2013... It remains the 3.8-liter twin-turbo chargers with VTG (variable turbine geometry). But as we hear from Zuffenhausen, the approximately 40 kilograms lighter successor will start here at the level of the previous S model, at around 530 horsepower - the new S version is then up to around 550 hp.

It looks just as sharp, the successor who will consume the other hand, about 15 percent less fuel. Zero to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds (3.4 s dual clutch transmission), peak h 313 km / The brand new multi-link rear suspension with adaptive, electro-mechanical steering, as well as the 918 Spyder is for very stable handling used - the adjustment is a function of speed with steering angles of a few degrees in either direction.

And the GT3? The sport and Cup racer seen August 2013 again as purist luxury free-flyer - it also has news at hand. The performance of the 3.8-liter increases from 435 to 450 hp (like around 465 hp), the motor is given as 911 in a direct injection, which lowers fuel consumption by about ten percent. The Hammer: In power transmission ZF brand to be offered in addition to the seven-speed manual optional even the extremely responsive dual clutch transmission (PDK).

A word on the Targa with a body in early 2014 offers a surprise. She returns, as shown in picture, back to classical roots. As before, there are two removable roof panels that can be easily stowed in the trunk.

turbo - 3,5 secs 0-100 only? IT will be a total fail if it accelerates slower than 2,9 secs 0-100

pls clarify - may be its time to look for another car if it is that slow....
