Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    Whoopsy:

The tire roar is quite tire dependent. PS2 is one of the noisiest tires around for 911 usage. I suspect it's due to the resonance between the wheel well and the tire noise and the proximity to the driver's ear in a 911. On stretches of un-asphalt concrete at highway speed, the noise is borderline unbearable. I had since switched to Bridgestone 050 and the noise is GONE over the same stretch of highway. There is no more tire roar anymore, no louder than any other car on any other road.

Michelin were my favourite tyres for many years, but it seems they are losing their touch. Their wet weather behaviour has been bettered by Bridgestone and now the noise issue!

Perhaps in the super sport segment (Cup and now PSS) they might be still on top but for people like me who want to circulate in their cars instead of racing, Michelin is not my #1 choice.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    Hello Rennteamers,

I have not yet given my very humble opinion on this new 911 as I wanted to get used to its new design before expressing my personal feelings.

After about two weeks, I'm still not used to it... Actually, I'm a bit disappointed because the more I look at it, the more I like the 997...

This new 911 looks odd from some angles. The rear of the car sits too high IMVHO and the car is too long. Porsche seems to have stretch the car from somewhere near the rear seats to the back end of the car. It results in a lack of proportion.

In addition, I really find it hard to justify this move: the car is bigger on the outside, but not really on the inside as you're not getting more space at the back.

So I keep asking myself the same question: why the need to stretch the car?

It looks more and more like a GT car, even if it's not.

IMO, GT looks would have been fine if we were talking about a panamera coupe. But on a 911, I'm not convinced yet.

It seems Porsche want to target a bigger audience with this 991. A sports car in a bigger envelop with GT looks (inside and outside) if you want.

But I'm not sure you can achieve that succesfully...  just my 2cents of course.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

The product/design strategy of the 991 is very clever IMO.

    • It keeps the 997, especially the Gen II, still fresh so values don't readily tumble spoiling the strong 911 image.
    • Introduces sufficiently new design and many new engineering elements to attract novelty buyers, particularly in new markets.
    • The car is expected to be easier to drive fast,  thus attracting a wider consumer base.
    • Its sports/GT mix ,although a bit watered down, is still very strong so that existing  911 buyers will be willing to replace their current Porsche with a version of the new model over the life-cycle of the 991.
    • Even if 991 is a departure from some traditional 911 values, obviously, there is no other car available in the market  that combines  these traditional attributes more successfully than the new 991.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Does anyone know if there is start button or traditional turn key to start?

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    There's a key not a start button.

But I expect that there will be keyless go available at some point.

I think the main reason (although Porsche will never admit that) for this move has something to do with emission rules in the US, no? Smiley

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

     Configurator is ready!!!!

Keyless entry is available as and option,

The aerokit cup and sportdesign package are great!!!

The 991 Doesn't look so much better than 997.2, but performance is absolutely superb!!! great improvement!!!! PDCC is what makes the Panamera ride like a sports car on the track, and now the 991 can use it!!! plus( -20mm lower and stiffer ride)!!!

If I have the opportunity to change my 997.2 black edition for a 991 S full of performance options, the main reason will be only guided by performance, not estetic.

60mm added at wheelbase (100mm overall) is a lot to aid stability especially at high speed prolonged bends. This is a weak point in 997, given its speed potential of course.

The 911 wheelbase has been increased at various stages in its life, the first time being in the mid or late 60s soon after launch.

The increase in the 991 footprint,  could be sufficient to get the car to a higher USA emission class and thus less penalties. Anyone sure about that?

However, we shouldn't exaggerate. The 911 has not suddenly become a stretched limousine because of these 100mm.

A ducktail spoiler doesn't fit the new design at, no matter if with or without additional wing on top.

    My humble opinion.

woopsy : thanks for tire info, I only had  Michelin on my turbo, hated the noise.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Wait, I didn't see those wheels on the white car.  That looks nice!  As for aqua, the pic makes it look more like Mexico Blue.  Aqua doesn't look like that, if it does I would not mind it.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

    Welcome to Rennteam Smiley

If I understand the German description correctly, that means the painted PCM which I would expect is a Porsche Exclusive option.

It may be available (but just not on the configurator) or it may not be available yet.

Perhaps someone else here can shed more light on this.

Something else I've been meaning to say ....

There are so many new members of Rennteam who are obviously drawn here by the imminent launch of the 991.

That's great to see and is exactly what I was expecting. (I even said the same in response to those people who were questioning the continued health and vibrancy of Rennteam).

All I can say is a very warm welcome to all our new members

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Anyone else think the spoiler combination of RS ducktail and wing just doesn't look right?  The configurator isn't the last word on options or even the order guide.  The last word is what's in the dealer/OPC computer that Porsche allows them to order, at least that's been my experience when ordering a Porsche built to my specs.

The Sport Design package features the ducktail without the additional wing on top. That is in fact the Aerokit Cup. Hopefully the version for the GT3 will look better in real life...

Not there yet but if I´m not mistaken it wasn´t available from the start for the 997 either.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Wow, the car went up in price. My 2006 997 was 84K and the 2011 991S I just made is at 109K. Granted, I went a little nuts with the options and went for the bigger engine but wow. I guess it'll be worth it though. I already feel like a kid at Christmas and I can't even order it for a bit.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Got my order in and i's loaded on the Porsche system   I've gone for a C2 instead of the S and have gone for Lime Gold as I'm fed up of the usual other colours and wanted a change. If I see a physical swatch and don't like it I can always change my mind but here is my spec ...... thus far anyway   I'll be swapping it for a targa if they bring back the classic look of the 70's model.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Yup the white is amazing (I won't "quote" the picture again!).  And the 5-spoke wheels are amazing.  (But they are VERY big.  Too big..?).  They'd look good in black too.

...which, along with the black section between the tailpipes is making it look more and more like a very nice evolution from my GTS still on order...

Forgive my ignorance though - I presume the AWD versions will have the wider rear body (like my GTS) - whereas the Carrera and Carrera S's we've seen so far are still "narrow-bodies" (is there a better P-term for the body shapes..?!)

Thanks Easy for the welcome too - I'm probably a little bit before the "991 new crowd", but only just!

Nice options - nice color combo!

I would leave the rear wiper and take the ventilated seats. I have it in my Panamera and I use it in the summer everyday - it so good.
