Schumi came back for fun but, in this respect Lauda is right, no one of Schumi's greatness feels any fun finishing so far off the pace. He wouldn't have achieved all that he did without being a competitive animal right to the very core of his being.

I can't help but feel that the novelty of 'driving for fun' during this 2nd career wore off for Schumi a long ago.

F1 is all about competition not just participation. So if you're losing, you aren't smiling

Anything else he might say is just spin for the media.

Schumi should retire gracefully and save himself any more embarrassment IMvHO.

One theory for McLaren's resurgence ...

A former Bridgestone guy has joined McLaren and identified the cause. The tyres were overheating since the brakes were overheating.

I do not expect Senna to score any more points than Heidfeld would have scored but the key difference is that Senna brings sponsorship money with him whereas Heidfeld did not.

What a story... admittedly Heidfeld has not been as strong as Kubica would´ve been and Senna, albeit seemingly a very nice guy, won´t score many points either but I still keep wondering if the poor performance of the car is intended to be masked by blaming the driver for it. If I remember correctly even Petrov has shown better performance in last year´s car once in a while [if he didn´t make a mistake] and some of the incidents [as in Hungary] has certainly not been Heidfeld´s fault.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

Exactly ... Heidfeld has had various DNFs because other people hit him or his car caught fire or some other reason that was not his fault ... but he is being blamed anyway for the poor results even though the car is hopeless ...

Heidfeld isn't quick in qualification and never has been ... he is someone who, almost unnoticed, can drive himself up to a good finishing position over a race distance ... sadly this has not been happening frequently enough recently for Renault's liking ... plus, with Renault developing its car for 2012, they need the money that Senna will bring ... it's a sad but inevitable decision IMO.

I also can't help but think that Eric Bouillier is an impatient man ... he never truly warmed to Nick Heidfeld's quiet style ...

BTW Eddie Jordan says it is for the Spa weekend but the article interestingly states that it is for the rest of the season ... let's see what more detail emerges ...

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

There's speculation that Heidfeld may be resorting to legal action to keep his race seat.

    http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7121119/Heidfeld-Ready-To-Sue-Renault

I guess it all depends on the contents of his contract. I had always assumed he was assured of a place till the end of the season or until Kubica returns (whichever is earlier).

Maybe Renault is using some performance based triggers to end the contract. Hard to understand what is really going on with no official announcement and no details emerging.

This is hardly the right preparation for Renault at Spa, for any racing return for Senna and more generally for Renault's post-summer break campaign till the end of the season.

Personally, I expect very little from a team that is going through so much upheaval internally. The only saving grace is that Petrov will hopefully continue to do a steady but unspectacular job.

IMO for Renault, Kubica can't come back soon enough.

Team Lotus must be enjoying every minute of this watching from the sidelines.

I should add that Genii Capital, the real owner of Lotus Renault is probably looking for a return on its investment. Hence recent decisions seem to be very much determined by financial considerations.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

It is obviously confirmed that Senna will get the seat in Spa, depending on his results possibly even longer. Obviously Genii Capital secured an investment deal over 10 billion US Dollar recently, wonder if there is any connection?

Romain Grosjean could possibly drive the car in some of the remaining races as well.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

It's official. Heidfeld is out. Senna is in.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/14658066.stm

    http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/08/renault-confirms-bruno-senna-will-race-for-team-in-belgian-gp/

IMO this only makes sense if Senna is kept long term. If Grosjean is joining anyway, then IMO Heidfeld should have been kept till then at the very least.

In the long run, it's better for Heidfeld. No point being in a team that doesn't value you.

IMO Heidfeld has underperformed generally but his recent DNFs were not his fault.

Webber putting psychological pressure on Vettel ... claims SV's domination is over ... remaining race wins in 2011 will be spread amongst drivers

Clever move by MW - he knows SV's only weakness (if he has one) is mental. He may crumble under pressure of being caught by the others in the Drivers' Championship. It's interesting timing too ... right at the start of the race weekend so it brings SV back to the same psychological hole he was in before the summer break. The trick is the casual way that MW appears to deliver this small flesh wound. The problem for MW though is that he has to start winning races too for these mind games to have any value to him.
