Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Now that I had some time to relax and look at the pictures, I would like to share my humble personal opinion.  In 2004/2005 when the 997.1 was introduced, I wasn’t impressed with the photos and when it came to the showrooms I went to check it out in person to do a touch and feel.  No offense to the 997.1 owners (strictly my personal impression) it didn’t capture me or made me say: I MUST have one urge.  If you recall I ordered the 4.2 R8.

However since yesterday that Rossi posted the pictures, this burning urge inside me (like a little kid) is back.  Every time I see the pictures I keep telling myself: I MUST get me one of these.  I feel rejuvenated kind of like when the heat was on during early 996 era.

I love the looks of the 991 the front, the back the proportion and the grace.  I love it and I’ll do my best to get one when available.  Thanks Porsche for fueling the fire in me again, well done.

very sexy. It's amazing how such subtle changes can make a huge overall difference. To quote steve jobs : "The total is greater than the sum of the parts".

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Just realized I can't figure out which one I like best - the new one or the old one. But WAY's pictorial helps me to realize I love them both. Best of all, I don't need the Singer anymore - my GTS is now officially "retro" compared to the 991 but with all the right stuff mechanically... ...and it hasn't even arrived yet!

Official technical data available now too:

    Carrera: 350 hp at 6400 rpm, 3.4 l engine

    Carrera S: 400 hp at 7000 rpm. 3.8 l engine

0-100 kph (Carrera S with PDK and Sport Chrono Plus):  4.1 seconds (4.3 seconds without Sport Chrono Plus but with PDK), Top speed (Carrera S): 302 kph.

Carrera GTS owners surely don't need to worry.

Weight is 45 kg lighter than 997 models.

The new 991 is 5.6 cm longer, 1.1 cm lower and 6.5 cm wider than the 997.

Really, 6.5 cm wider... that's a lot compared to the 997. Can't wait to see it in real life, although I'm not in the market for a 911 for the next two years..

So today has been pretty much a fake?

    Oh well, more waiting.

Fake ? Are you kidding ? Smiley

A short word regarding the look of the 991: Why are some of you that disappointed ? I don't get it. The 991 is a perfect evolution of the 997. It may have one or two design quirks but these are going to be taken care of with the facelift, no doubt about it. The car is not a beauty but a masterpiece, you need to look at the whole picture and what the 911 actually represents. It is not a car you can change the design lightly, so the current evolution is almost perfect. I don't like the huge lettering on the rear (yes, 911 would suffice) but if you expected a larger butt, it is going to be available with the AWD models.

Just sit back and enjoy the ride: If you already own a 997, you still have a great 911, which is good news. If you're looking for something new, the 991 is amazing. Wait until you see it in person, then we talk again.

Just responding to the poster that said it was. I'm quite pleased with the new look if these are for real. I'm planning on selling my 2006 997 and getting a 991S withing the year. Good to know that these are legit.

I don't think I've ever seen a normally aspirated motor that made well over 100hp/L at only 6,400rpm.  Seems very low...

For comparison, the Cayman R makes under 100hp/L at 7,400rpm (same basic engine architecture with same displacement of 3.4L).  Are you sure there is no typo?

I love the fact that once you contemplate about a present car (like the 997.2) you can't imagine how the design will ever be outdated, to wake up this morning and to open this tread. Reset of the brain. Smiley

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991...

Anyone else notice the little display attached to the top of the hub of the steering wheel on the interior shots? Looks like a gear and lighted rev display (green on left going to yellow and red as you rev the engine - a shift light so to speak).

Other than that, like most others here, I like it but have reservatios about hte fog lights. Look clumsy to me. The photshopped ones to make it more like the 430 are much better.

Now to dream of a 991S in Aston Martin Almond Green with Cocoa interior...

Can anyone elaborate on why they opted for an electrical power assistance rather than the hydraulic system they had in the 997? It was one of the driving traits 997's were praised for, what clear advantage has an electrical power steering as to make it worthwhile risking putting that praised characteristic on the line?

    Weight? Fuel consumption? Cost?

Let me guess: Better adaptation to certain driving situations like pavement, driving dynamics, lateral acceleration, speed, etc ? Emissions and fuel consumption ?

Is that so bad if it actually feels the same ?Smiley

Of course not, but it remains a gamble. Why change if it's not broken, or even better why change what's being praised...

But, if the upsides outweigh the downsides, I'm all for!

Well, one reason which makes sense to me is "packaging".

The steering rack is at the front of the car, the PAS pump is engine driven, so on a 911 has to be at the rear of the car.

The hydraulic system plus long pipework from pump to rack are also probably much heavier then a corresponding electric PAS system, so this change also probably contributed to the weight reduction of the 991 compared to the 997.

If that figure is correct, then probably only due to resited mirrors being further outboard.

I thought I had read that the actual body width is the same as the 997 at the rear axle, but wider than the 997 at the front axle due to increased track? Smiley
