Funny you point that out. I don't think that hip bulge has been discussed much. It's actually a new line as far as 911's go and I'm not sure I like it. The upper line of the rear hips normally tapers down to the rear bumper. This rise is almost boxer/cayman like. Hmm...

It just looks diffirent....You right it's more Cayman style, but I actualy like these Cayman humps :)

In these pictures, it doesn't strike me as so bad, although the combination of the wing and ducktail is a bit much ... and on a Carrera S, it's all too much in my opinion. Trying to pretend you own a GT3? Meh.

I hope.....so hope that Porsche won't go for this kit on 991 GT3.....Smiley  If so I will stay with my 997.1 GT3 forever! Smiley

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Well I really like the OEM Aerokit but I do also like the sport design kit too (basically the same as Aerokit less the wing on top of the ducktail). I would buy a 991 with Aerokit but even though I also like the techart kit too I wouldnt ever buy one.

The Aerokit offered to the rest C2/4/S range has always been 95% the same as the GT3 so I wouldnt count on it the 991 GT3 looking radically different when it comes out, but time will tell on this.

As for Aerokit pretending to be a GT3 I think thats rubbish - it only pretends to be a GT3 if you have it re-badged as a GT3 or prehaps debadge it - in which case you are clearly a total n*bhead.  A C2S with Aerokit has a completly different appeal to GT3 because it a far more usuable daily driver with 4 seats and all the creature comforts albeit at the sacrifice of additional performance offered by GT3.    Its quite easy to spec up a C2S or C4S with Aerokit to be far more expensive than a GT3 is, so there isnt really much point in pretending you own a car you could actually have bought if you wanted to....

There is clearly a market for both and I for one love them both for their seperate merits.

    Carrara:

Compared to the 997 it does look large, but compared to 99% of modern cars, it actually looks very sleek and slim. Just a little awkward and tall looking for my tasted. I agree with you on the interior that the car feels larger, but I actually feel like the 997 has a more if not spacious, open interior. Does anybody else agree?

The problem with these hips is that it makes the car look much taller . I saw a 991 parked between two other cars in an underground parking lot and these hips were at the hight of the side windows of the other cars. That did not look right , as the 911 has always been low.

Thanks for the video.  Can someone post the EVO cover story about the 991 being "beaten" by other sports car rivals?

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Such aftermarket mods (wheels, bodykits etc...) are always very market dependent.  In the UK we tend to be very conservative with modifing new cars as it is heavily frowned upon by dealers come resale and by insurance companies.  Therefore in the UK it tends to be generally a choice of OEM or nothing - unless of course you are not bothered by the aforementioned constraints.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

    +1

It adds to insurance premiums, makes cars hard to resell and modifying cars is for Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo owners rather than Porsche owners :)

That's how it is perceived in the UK at any rate ... of course, car culture can be very different in other countries.

Same in Canada and even in the US... with Los Angeles as an exception. I did not want to buy a used Cayenne TT with lots of aftermarket tweaks.

But here it is strictly based on the style and resale value.  Insurance barely changes if you add 20k of aftermarket stuff to your car.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

Having downloaded the iPad version of evo 168 a couple of days ago, I finally got around to reading the two cover stories today - group tests pitting the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S against a number of their respective rivals.  While I generally apply a healthy dose of skepticism to journalists' reviews, I have always found evo to be particularly good.  They consistently apply the standards implied by their strap line, 'The Thrill of Driving' - so reviews are not about highest power or straight-line speed, nor about lowest 0-100 times or even lap times, but about the sensations engendered by the dynamic interplay between suspension, steering, engine and gearbox.  They can also certainly not be accused of being anti-Porsche or anti-911 - in fact, they've often faced criticism for being too pro-Porsche (as evidenced by the number of times a 911 has won their eCOTY test, including 2011 and 2010).

I mention all of the above simply to emphasise how unusual (and disappointing) the results of these particular group tests were.  To cut to the chase, in the first test, the Carrera came in second behind the Nissan GT-R (the other cars tested were Lotus Evora S, Jaguar XKR, BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe).  In the second test, the Carrera S finished third behind the Audi R8 V8 and Nissan GT-R (the other cars were Maserati GranTurismo S, Jaguar XKR-S, BMW M5 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage S).

Unfortunately, I can't post any extracts from the articles from my iPad, but I think the following quotes accurately encapsulate the conclusion: "...the 991 is very, very good.  But - and it's a massive but - it feels rather aloof and cold.  It's lacking that cohesion and sweet uniformity of weights and response that is a big part of the Porsche magic......To the majority of 911 buyers this probably won't matter - if anything it will give them more confidence.  But to us it does......Some of this coldness is undoubtedly down to the electric steering, but there's an inconsistency of connection with what's happening at the wheels too that saps confidence....".  "As fast, poised and high quality as the 3.8 991 is, there's a layer of gauze between you and the car".

I am not suggesting that this is necessarily the definitive verdict, nor that others may not come to different conclusions.  I also don't think any purpose would be served by arguing whether they tested against the correct rivals, etc, etc.  i do think, however, that this is a useful test and a view which should be taken seriously (one which is not completely out of line with what others - including some on this forum - have had to say after driving the 991).  I'm reminded of a conclusion in another recent test (can't remember which), that said something like: the 991 is undoubtedly a better car, but not necessarily a better 911.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

To me the best reviews I have read so far are those of real users Carlos and RC and I would rather stick to their conclusions.

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, the new 991... (LAUNCH thread)

    Hi PureBlue,

I am now more confused than ever about whether to order the new 991 go for a 997 GTS or go the M5 route. I like you you value the articles that come out of EVO and the fact that Porsche won Pcoty 2010 and 2011 would indicate that Porsche produce real drivers cars that are often really appreciated by the EVO team.

For the 991 to come in 3rd behind the Nissan and Audi is rather unsettling to say the least. I would like to make an observation from the test and would like to hear anyones comments. Firstly in the Top Car magazine article from their Feb issue " if i am not mistaken these come from CAR magazine UK" the 991 beat the GTR, R8 and M3. interestingly the Audi came 3rd here and the spoils were between the GTR and 991 to quote " So, by a wafer thin margin, the Porsche 911 snatches the trophy away from the Nissan GTR. Simply put, it's the best sports car that money can buy."

EVO article " In the Audi there is subtlety and soul to the driving experience"            " It seems strange the R8 should so clearly beat the 991 for subjective feel, but there's no question it does"

Top Car article  " By comparison, the R8 is a simple point-and- shoot machine, It has subtlety ( and huge entertainment) in its arsenal when you're right on it, but the process of extracting its performance just doesn't seem to have the nuance of the Porsche; the damping feels less well resolved, you always need just a bit more steering lock than you'd expect to hit an apex..... The R8 is still a terrifically engaging and beautifully poised car, but the 991 has greater depths  and is probably  a shade quicker"

Besides the fact that these articles completely contradict each other, my observation is that in EVO it was a manual 991 and the Top Car article was PDK. Is it possible that the 991 was developed with PDK in mind and is a better overall package. Most, not all of the articles i have read suggest that the manual is a little disappointing !!!!

My gut feel says i should value what Carlos and RC have to say over the opinions of the motor journalists !!!!
