    Top Trumps, 1976

I was 10 years old in 1976, and we used to play Top Trumps in the school playground.  My favourite pack contained a picture of a Porsche Carrera, and I was instantly smitten.  I was reminded of this writing another post yesterday when I mentioned that I always preferred the Porsche to the Countach - it was from that pack.

So tonight, 2 months into my 4 or 5 month wait for my first Porsche (the GTS), I went onto eBay and found the very card that I remember so well from 35 years ago.  (First time on ebay too... Smiley).  It was like finding an old friend.

So this is, in a way, my very first Porsche.  $3.99 from eBay, plus postage.

It will come with me in November to the Porsche Centre and I'll pop it in the sun visor where it will stay.  Smiley

You're seriously smitten ... don't worry, we've all been there while waiting for what seemed like an eternity for a new Porsche to be ready for collection/delivery ...

    That's just awesome!
An rs 2.7 in front of what seems to be the castle at the nurburgring?

I can so relate to your way of connecting your childhood dreams with what you've reached in life, big thumbs up!

    Fantastic! Good on you!

In 1973 I was 14 and I recall going with my parents to Zuffenhausen (Porsche Factory - That looked very different in those days) to pick up a brand new red 2.7 RS. We drove it to Genoa where we caught a ferry-boat to Malaga (Spain) and then drove the car home to Lisbon (Portugal)

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Thanks guys! And now I know a little more about the photo - at the 'ring of course!

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Awesome Budster, I have exactly the same recollection of a game of Top Trumps in 1996 (also 10 yrs of age back then) with a picture of a 993 Turbo. That's where it all started!

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Hey Porker, it's not fair that you didn't have to wait 35 years!  And I think you have to get yourself onto eBay and find that card!

Maybe I've started something here - a Porsche isn't generally the kind of car that you decide to buy after considering the alternatives - most of us always wanted one, and there was no substitute.

So I'd love to hear what started the love affair for others..?

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

My father owned Porsches since 1958. I was born in 1959. I grew up with a Porsche in the household and the  Porsche was always the older and much more important sibling.

Lovely post, glad you found this image on ebay and went for it.

Some things are priceless. When they are $3.99 it's even better

Sadly I'm also still waiting, my Porsche is still some years away! Smiley

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Great post, great story. My moment was the first time I ever drove one, a1967 off the showroom floor. Changed everything I thought I knew about design and ergonomics. Then Janis Joplin stopped in her 356 as I was walking across Haight street and I was forever smitten.

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

3 months into the wait for my GTS, the top trump card has arrived from eBay.  The Carrera 2.7 RS continues to haunt me...

Now, how many of you took these photos to be the real thing..?

They are in fact of a 1:18 die cast model, about 26cms in length.  There is a whole community of grown men who collect these things and discuss them on forums (fora?).  Very sad.

I'm getting one - $100 on eBay with red decals.  Can't resist...

    Don't tell anyone...Smiley 28

The headlamps gave it away for me. IMO the markings on the plastic are small but not small enough for a full size headlamp.

I was duped.  That model is fantastic!

    Where is it from?

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

The top 2 brands appear to be AutoArt and MiniChamps, and the 1:18 scale is the one to look for.  On Amazon, or eBay, or google to find other specialist sights.  Mine's on it's way and I'm now thinking about a 2nd....

I'm feeling really sheepish about this...

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Today is the day..!  6 hours to delivery of my first 911..!

I don't think I'm going to be too productive this morning!

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Enjoy - nothing quite like picking up your first 911.  Smiley

I'll be collecting mine about 2 hours after you.  Smiley

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Lol, don't forget to post some pictures!
That reminds me, I have an autoart model of a 996 GT3 rs red/white.

I'll see if I can get the macro lens out this weekend, might yield some nice pictures.
I've been looking for a red/white rs for a while as well, but there's so many other things I would also like to spend $100,- at! :P

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Not a great picture, but I think we're all forgiven for the initial iphone shots!  Here she is, with the sign in the window just before delivery (actually I'M not sorry at all that she's sold indecision)

I've spent the afternoon in 7th heaven as you can all imagine - it's a better experience than I ever imagined it to be.  I really couldn't be happier - I feel like a kid.  In fact I think I'll pop down to the garage one more time!!!

I've taken the odd letter and number off the plate (you guys have made me paranoid!) but as you can see I was lucky enough to get a standard Cape Town number with "911" within the 4 numbers (OK, that means you have 10 guesses..!) at a nominal cost.  We also picked up the Cayenne today, and that contains - again at just R2000 ($250), the number 958...  A nice touch if nothing else.

Oh, and, I've posted on my thread from 6 months ago, as the Top Trump card is now firmly embedded in the ipod centre console...  Home at last...

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

So you know that scene in Terminator 2 or 3 when Arnold sees the new version Terminator, and then there are dozens of them?

Well, having picked up my new GTS yesterday, off I went down the Peninsula this morning to enjoy my first breakfast run, only to come across the convoy of the new 991's - 4 groups of about 8 cars each with a Cayenne fore and aft - coming in the opposite direction!  Best of all, we were at a junction with us all pretty much stationary.  Pity my wife wasn't in front of me with her new Cayenne too!

Lots of flashing lights and smiles - from real Porsche lovers on what is a special day for me AND them! - what a wonderful experience!  Pity I didn't get a photo, but I'm still concentrating too much to think about getting the iphone ready!

Oh, and for the record: Arnold prevails!

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Congrats Budster - and welcome to 911 ownership!  Like you, I've been enjoying my new GTS since yesterday afternoon (will post more about this tomorrow).  Also, like you, I've had three close encounters with the convoy of 991s over the past two days.  For those who haven't seen these cars in the flesh, I can confirm that they look - and sound - magnificent!

(By the way, any chance that you drove past the entrance to Cape Point this afternoon and flashed your lights at a white Carrera GTS going in the opposite direction?  If so, that was me).  Smiley

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976

Gentlemen - Congrats on joining the GTS club.Smiley Cant wait until your babies are run in & you take them out on the Killarney track. I have missed every trackday here in the UAE owing to work commitments so am keen to hear about your track experiences

    Re: Top Trumps, 1976
