Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

Very true, remember he came into F1 directly into a top team with a top car, and under the umbrella of Ron Dennis who gave him everything he wanted... unlike the rest of the drivers who started in back of the grid teams and worked their way up to a top team.

Great race! Bravo to Button and MS. Also to Hamilton for admiting his mistake after watching the replay. Vettel and Mark Webber did a good job. Red Bull's strategy was very good. I am sad watching Ferrari. They could do better with a new management.

Actually Ferrari have been like that for most of F1 modern era. Don't be deceived by the Schumacher-Todt-Brawn multiple titles.

Between the Lauda years in the 70s and Schumacher, the Scuderia were the great under-achievers in F1, especially given their resources. A case of the myth shadowing reality.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

I really enjoyed yesterday's race. Some fantastic driving by a number of pilots, including Button and Schumacher.

On a sidenote, now that there is DRS, there is a lot more overtaking, which should be a good thing. But the thing is, overtaking is now way too easy, it isn't fun anymore! It used to be very exiting when one car would overtake the other in a spectacular way, by outbraking or by chosing a clever line. Nowadays, the overtaking often happens on the straights, just by opening up the wing. What are the opinions on this?

That assessment is a bit unfair, isn't it? All great teams go through slumps. Remember Lotus? Ferrari went without a title for 16 years (1983-1999), McLaren is closing in on the same kind of negative record (1998-2011) and I am not even going to bring up Williams. The fact of the matter remains that Ferrari holds nearly all F1 records, hence the myth which was built on the race track.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

They hold the records because they started long before any of the others and because they were boosted by the wins and titles during the Todt-Brawn-Schumacher Era, which was a unique period and cannot be repeated even after 50 years.

I would like to see Ferrari (and Alonso) at the top again and I feel frustrated about them as I was feeling the same during the 1980-1999 drought. I don't like Ferrari road cars that much,  but SF is a great Institution in Motorsport.

There is something wrong with the organization of the SF IMO. I don't think there is a shortage of engineering or driver  talent. After Jean "Napoleon" Todt it looks like a headless establishment.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

I am afraid that your anti-Ferrari feelings are blurring your judgement mate. In addition to the absolute records (i.e. most wins, championships etc) Ferrari also holds nearly all the records as a percentage of  races/championsahips contested (i.e. highest win percentage, highest fastest laps percentage, most championships won as a percentage of the championships contested etc). Also disregarding a highly successful era arbitrarily is absurd! Let's also disregard the McLaren Prost-Senna era or the Williams-Renault years of domination!

I don't think there is something fundamentally wrong with Ferrari. The problem lies in the current regulations that promote aerodynamics above all other aspects of performance. Ferrari was always an engine specialist. Taking away that advantage left them battling it out against that aero magician, named Adrian Newey. Also the inability to test hit them hard as Ferrari was always more geared towards track testing, unlike their simulation-loving rivals.

    Excuses, excuses................blame the referee Smiley

Get Newey and Horner to Ferrari before Alonso either gets fed up with the Scuderia or becomes a spent force.

Yes seemingly so,  but you have to position yourself within the 1 sec, or on the contrary widen the gap if you are in front to avoid DRS. That's not so easy to do if you are an average driver.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

The key for drivers was not to lift off the throttle going through Eau Rouge. This helped pursuing drivers get within 1 sec at Raidillon enabling the DRS to help complete the overtaking manoeuvre.

Re: 2011 Belgian F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps

This is dirty from Pastor Maldonado IMO.

    http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7135472/Maldonado-takes-another-swipe-at-Lewis

Hamilton was responsible for the tangle in Monaco.
Hamilton did nothing wrong IMO going through the chicane in qualification - he was just trying to set a lap and Maldonado took a long time to get through that chicane.
Maldonado was wrong IMO to take a side-swipe at Hamilton on the start-finish straight. IMO the 5 place grid penalty was a lucky escape. I would have disqualified him from the race.
Hamilton was responsible for colliding with Kobayashi.
But Maldonado should not ride on that to claim both he and Hamilton were equally guilty but that only he got punished. That's dirty tactics IMO.
It's unbelievable that a rookie has the nerve to tell a former world champion to be more focussed.
IMO he should follow his own advice and not fight with another driver on the track.
Maldonado's integrity just fell irreversibly in my estimation.

He is now 5th in the championship behind his teamate Button. Who would of thought at the begining of the season, but he did it all himself, it wasn't like he was unluky or something. He should be getting better and better in F1 yet this is his worst year yet in F1.

Webber's Eau Rouge pass and also JB's pass inside Schumacher, neither of which needed DRS, just spectacular driving.

    That was a great race.Smiley

I think it was a kind of magic trick. He teleported himself through the tight spot or something!Smiley

Anyway, he did what everyone else thought was impossible. I believe the last time it was tried it resulted in a death.
