I keep hearing rumors that the headlights are going to be more upright. Can RC shed some light here?

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

RC, can you give us a help here, please

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Christian's hands are probably tied in terms of what he can tell us publically.  Maybe I should PM him instead.

Seriously though, I am getting worried.  Rear lights look too thin and front lights look too Boxster like.  I have already owned 3 variants of 997s, should I be looking at the fourth variant too (turbo - I need rear seats this time)???  RC, surely you can tell me that much!

After all this time and build up, the apparent final product does not have much wow factor to me. Should be called 997.3.

Lets just hope that the performance makes look beyond what we see here.....

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Now we can see for first time, production wheels... are they the 20' or 19'?

@WAY: +1 ... I would go so far as to say that some of the front headlamp designs look like they came from a distant cousin of the old Ford Scorpio ... Smiley

But these are just spyshots, renderings, photoshop approximations ... so I'm just reserving judgement.

The rear bumper on the red car looks better than the blue and yellow car. Again the new design is more like an evolution than a revolution, but I´m sure when this car hits the road it´s going to be a winner in all aspects. Wheels are looking great too.

If you compare the 997.1 to 997,2, the .2 looks so much better with only minor upgrades... with the 991 the difference will much much bigger for the 997.2 than it might seem at a first glance. Anyway this car doesn´t make me run to my dealer and order one. Will give some more time to read the first driving reports, seeing it on real life and make a test drive before I make any decision, but for now my 997.2 is looking great in my garage Smiley and I think it will stay there for quite sometime.

Anybody thinking on going to Frankfurt motor show? I think I´m going there.

i have to say i was so looking forward to this car and i will add my voice to the chorus of disappointment... I loved the Larson pics in Autocar and hte Auto bild renderings.. the back bumper -- the space between the lights and the exhaust looks so big and cumbersome to me. i like the 997.2 better i think. i'm sure the car will be great mechanically but i'm already looking forward to seeing what the 991.2 will look like (as it sounds like many others here will be too). (though, i'm sure it will be a great car mechanically).

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I think the most telling picture thus far is the 991 with the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 in the background.   More importantly than headlight shape or turn signals, note the entire body and how wide and flat the nose is, how the entire shape runs a little wider and smoother and less angular.  The rear fenders are very, very wide and thoughtfully sculpted.  Porsche has mastered evolving the 911 design and I think without a previous generation car to compare it with the eye doesn't notice how everything has changed without disturbing the design DNA of the 911.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

    Oh, Thanks.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I agree, Porsche has truly mastered the shape with the 991. Many will complain about the design now, just as they did when the 997 first came out (people said it looked much too soft, was too big, and was much less aggressive than the 996, but look what those people are saying now...), but in the near future, the 991 will have a very respected design. Porsche got everything on this car spot on, except those foglights that droop onto the side of the intakes (maybe they'll look good without the camo). I love how the nose is now much lower, when the trend these days is a high nose. The only thing I don't like about the shape is that I notice with each generation, the raised front wings become less and less pronounced. About the new sunroof, every single mule so far (except for maybe one or two) since 2008 that we've seen has had this new sunroof. It seems it opens up about half of the roof, and the panel that removes is body coloured, not glass. Here are some images of the new sunroof.

I hope there's a sunroof delete option. It looks like this new sunroof, though seamlessly integrated into the design, adds some unnecessary weight at the highest point of the car.

    Carrara:_______________________________________________

Here are two images I made comparing the dimensions and design of the 991 and 997.

Thanks Carrara, this really shows the differences, the windshield in the 991 is more slanted and but especially more bulging foward around the midline, makes I look much sportier. The shorter overhangs are also very evident in these pics as well as that they are lower now. Also roofline is significantly lower.

This is the first time I can honestly say that I see the 997 design as having aged a bit now, now that it can be compared side by side like this to the 991, it makes the design of the 997 look older.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

^^ You're welcome, and I agree! I didn't think it would be possible to make the 997 look like an old design, but the 991 manages to look so much more modern.

Something just occurred to me: The Panamera platform underwent similar testing to the new 911 platform. And we all see how absolutely amazing the Panamera platform is. This new 911 platform seems to have undergone much more extensive testing than has the Panamera platform, and it weighs MUCH less, and only has two doors. I imagine the new 911 is going to reach astronomical levels of performance, especially the Turbo model.

Nobody else tests their cars as much as Porsche. I can't think of any other model from any other company that reaches such a solid benchmark of performance, quality, design, and perfection as the Porsche 911.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

It may just be me but it looks like the 991 is morphing back towards the less defined style of the 996 with the loss of the more pronounced raised front wings and flatter, more featureless rear.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

honestly after carrara POST comparing both...

will be   IN LIVE both together the difference pretty noticeable??

im pics we can see the difference.. but average people dont...

just asked a employer here... he think both are the same...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

The photo comparo above shows a more streamlined car - less 911. Some may like it, many 911 fans won.

I say it again... it will be a great car, but further way from the 911 soul and that is meaningful to some.

Thanks Misha for the side by side comparrison. Yes, seeing it like that the 997 looks more dated! amazing, how little things change the total picture!

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Thanks Lars  - but that side by side pic. was posted by Carrara  ,  this time  .

I agree with you how little things improve the whole picture , when 'base'  is very good .  I like new 911 very much .

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

It seems that the blue and yellow cars are US-spec cars judging by the color of the side indicators (orange vs white on the red car) and by the space allocated to the plate on the rear bumper.  If this is the case this means no bumperettes anymore on US-spec cars!

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I dont' see any key holes on the driver's door handle!! Don't tell me it's keyless entry only and start button ignition instead of using a traditional key.

Personally, I am not a fan of Panamera key which is shaped like the car itself. I hope the 991 is not that either.
