Read: Normally we would have expected our customers to pay a fortune for these modifications, but after the devastating first tests they will get them for free.

I think its a good thing they did react at all and as quickly as they did. Most other car makers would ignore the critism or wait until the next generation to make tthe changes if at all. Now I realise that they were in a different situation with this being the initial launch, but the fact that they listened is a plus.

I agree that it's right that they acted quickly to improve their product - what is disappointing to read is the media spin they are putting on why they have rolled out the updates.
Their customer base can afford a £170k car. They are not fools ;)

I think the bottom line is the car was most likely signed off to the way Ron Dennis wanted it. The fact the changes have been made so quickly suggests that alternate set ups had already been tested as part of the development process as possible final spec's. It looks like it's taken the negative press reviews to have them quickly reinstated.

Guys come on! They heard the comments of 5-10 journalists and they tried to do sth about it. Is that a bad thing? Would we have prefer they did nothing? This HAS to be a positive thing.
Sometimes I get the feeling people just love to whine and whine..

Also, the reason they have to act so quickly is only because they don't have yet a reputation to fall back on and ride as do thise other manufacturers. McLaren will not sell the car just on name, many potential customers may sign up but at the end the day, they need to earn every sale on the test drive. So its in their best interest to listen to the press.
Have they sent out any of the new updated cars for the press??

Little hint... MP4-12C example that will be tested by Sport Auto is much faster then 458 Italia. On the track as well... So, what seems to be the problem?
Is it UK car press in General?
Bad example of MP4-12C press car?
Personally, I do not have clear opinion on this subject. I still think that McLaren posted overoptimistic numbers, specially regarding track times.
458 or MP4-12C? Neither for me. From various reasons.

I am not sure whether any production cars are available to the non-UK test procedures. If any cars were available they would most likely not be standard. I think we need to show some patience until the Supertest will be available

Many of the tweaks are to the car’s Intake Sound Generator, which controls the amount of noise coming from the engine bay into the cabin. A tube containing a butterfly valve runs from the engine’s plenum chamber to the cabin. The valve now opens wider in Track mode.

Isn't it supposed for a sports car to be fast, raw and noisy per se, and not tweaked with artificial noise amplifiers and such stuff?
McLaren need to find their place under the sun. Their cars must develop certain appeal, not just trying to gather all the good points from the competitors, then mixing them up in the "Perfect cocktail". One usually buys a Ferrari or a Lamborghini for their flamboyance, style, speed and drama, other buys a Porsche for its character, (again) speed, perfection and utter composure and everyday suitability.
You almost cannot rival a Ferrari for its passion and sound (except for the Carrera GT 
), you better shine with another characteristic that will make you really unique. The differences between each other makes people/cultures/cars/boats, etc. really interesting and highly esteemed...

Hmm ... that's a very interesting point of view.
So applying it to McLaren, what could one say is McLaren's unique character?
IMHO it's clinical performance typical of a car made in a laboratory ...
The sad thing is that this doesn't sell cars ... hence McLaren's desperate attempts to inject enjoyment, passion etc into their car.
Personally, if it makes the car more fun to drive (even if it doesn't improve its already stellar performance) then this can only be good for owners ... even if it means taking a page out of Ferrari, Lamborghini or Pagani's book.
Let's face it - the Italians are the best at that kind of flamboyance and drama in a car ... and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

at 17:20 in Hereford, UK i saw my second MP4-12c, this time VP20. It was just appealing today as it was last year when i saw the XP drive past.
I think what a lot of people might be missing is that people buy Ferrari, Lamboghini etc for their own personal reasons. Whether that be the manufacturers history, heratage, maybe for bragging rights or simply because when you have so much surplus cash what else are you going to do with it?
What Mclaren have done is provide a car that isnt loud and bold drawing attention. Its quieter, more comfortable and subtle. All the points that some on this thread have suggested are negative points, but for me, in my eyes they are the definition of the ultimate every day supercar. There are indeed some people out there in the world who do want the power and precision, but their personal preference is to have it without being flamboyant or loud, but also to not have to resort to a powerful saloon to achieve this.
In fairness im never likely to own a car of such stature such as many of you own, i earn very little and my circumstances will hold me back for some time. My Toyota MR2 (sw20) will have to suffice for the mean time as i watch all of you split hairs over small details. The definitive line for me really is, if you can afford it and it doesnt appeal to you then look at a different car that will make you happy, if you can afford it and it does appeal to you then you have my admiration for living my dream.

OT: I've said this before but I'll say it again, I love seeing pictures of exotics in gas stations
