A couple of car events I attended recently

I've been to a couple of car events and thought they may be of interest. Both were held at venues that are owned by the National Trust so were open to the general public.

The first was the annual Supercar Sunday event held at Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire by the web forum ScudItalia. There were around 150 cars present including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Morgans, Spyker, Koenigsegg, Mosler etc.

Some pics starting with Cliveden House - former home of the Astors. The house is now a hotel and leisure spa but the grounds are maintained by the National Trust.

The second event was the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain spring picnic which was held at Belton House in Lincolnshire. This is another National Trust property and the house and gardens are stunning and well worth a visit. We are very lucky to have so many beautiful houses like this to visit here.

Incredible pictures Iain. Your Dino looks so timeless, have you taken any pictures alongside the 458?

In heaven it would have rained in April so that the lawns would have been a lot greener and more lush.

But I agree with you as far as the cars are concerned. SmileySmiley

Oh to be in England now that Spring is here !

Wonderful settings. We have nothing to compare with the timeless architecture of a millenia of lords, earls and barons putting their ill gotten wealth into eternal beauty. The cars look good too !

Thanks Iain for showing us a facet of England outside the humdrum, ugly new towns which dominate the urban landscape.

Not yet, it's on my "to do" list though.

The Dino really attracts a lot of attention and seems to be a particular favourite with the ladies. I had a bit of a "spirited" drive the other week in it whilst on my way to my Porsche centre. I happened upon a new 997 GTS that was keeping a respectable pace on the dual carriageway and tucked in behind him in the Dino as I thought he'd put his foot down if I passed him. After a mile or so I decided to overtake as the old girl likes a bit of speed Smiley and he wound his window down as I went by. He then followed me for about two miles into the dealership and came over to ask me about the car. I doubt that would have happened with the 458.

Nothing to do with character IMO. Old cars are appreciated for being remnants of another era, akin to a time machine if you like. That's what excites people. If Iain was driving his 458, that other bloke would be green with envy and thus would not have stopped as he would have considered the Italia as a superior competitor to his GTS, instead of a piece of automotive history. It's the same with all old things. They may be technically, vastly inferior to their counterparts of today, but they bring out the romance of another age from people.

Just semantics. Call it 'romance', call it 'panache', call it 'style', call it 'character'. All different ways of saying the same thing

I agree to an extent with that. Whoever is driving my 458 in 40 years (assuming petrol is still readily available) may well encounter the same interest for nostalgia for a bygone era Smiley Also if I'd been in my 458 I wouldn't have hung around behind the GTS in the first place Smiley

I also agree with easy that older cars do have a unique sense of style though from a period when design came from the mindset that "if it looks right let's build it" as opposed to focus groups, crash test regulations, wind tunnel influence etc etc. We also have to remember that cars are now designed to appeal to a global market whereas in the 50's and 60's they were designed primarily for European and US tastes.

That is certainly true of a Dino.

Another aspect is that it is a fairly safe bet that a guy driving an A1 restored Dino is a true enthusiast who is worth talking to, if you yourself are interested in cars.

After chasing down a late-model supercar to get involved in an automotive chin-wag the risk is somewhat greater that you'll be confronted with a Hooray Henry or monosyllabic soccer player who happens to drive that kind of car, not due to real interest and enthusiasm, but because he can effortlessly afford to.  Smiley  Maybe OK, if you are also interested in soccer and collect players' autographs, but a waste of your own time if you are not. Smiley

Re: A couple of car events I attended recently

Yet there are those who are stuck in a time warp and cannot understand or appreciate modernity. I know of owners who would never consider buying a new car because of their love of the classic cars.

I enjoy looking at some of the classic cars but never have had interest in owning one. There are nothing more than a curiosity. On the road they pollute the air and get in the way of traffic.

Wait a minute, a GTS driver who put his foot down when you tried to pass him in your vintage car? Smiley

What was RC doing in the UK? Smiley

BTW, lovely pics, Iain, with fabulous cars. Smiley

Owning an antique car is different than owning a piece of art. The purpose of a car is functionality while the main purpose of art is beauty. That said, I never indicated that the older cars were not attractive. Many are nice to look at but something I would never own. They smell of mold, age, foul the air and are very uncomfortable to drive and ride in.

Do you find horse buggies beautiful and if so, would you own one?Smiley Also, I am curious. If Ferrari built the Dino and the 458 today and you could only buy one, which would you buy?Smiley
