Cyclist Wouter Weylandt dies after Giro d'Italia crash

Not really motor sports, but racing sports anyway.
Any cycling fans here? I'm not much of a fan, but the event of Weylandt's crash really made an impression on me. Poor feller, 26 y/old top athlete, crashes when downhilling and doesn't survive :-( May he rest in peace.

This is so tragic. I follow cycling with great respect and this is just tragic.

RIP Wouter and my thoughts are with his family, friends and pregnant girlfriend

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

     Yes very sad story.

I cycle myself but feel always very vulnerable on my bike. Last year I completed an Ironman and had to put a lot of milage on my bike training. I always tried to avoid busy roads as much as possible, but sometimes you can't. A lot of cars misjudge the speed you are riding with or don't keep sufficient space when overtaking. Had some scary moments...

Downhill is tricky too, witnessed a crash during the downhill part of the Ironman bike race, didn't look pretty. Race was over for the poor guy. Personally I take it easy on the downhill, for an amateur the seconds you gain don't offset the risk you need to take.

Now I stick to MTB mainly

Re: Cyclist Wouter Weylandt dies after Giro d'Italia crash

I have been cycling for fun and exercise for as long as I can remember and I can say that it is potentially a very dangerous hobby. I enjoy proper road bikes a lot but they can become very vulnerable depending on road surface and speed in an emergency and of course downhill. Also because of the rider's body position handling can become difficult in a sudden maneuver.

I have found that the so-called Hybrids and Fitness bikes are a good compromise. The wheels are larger than MTB and  tyres thinner that aid speed, the transmissions could be MTB or Road , the fork could be suspended or carbon depending on preference and use but the frame geometry and handlebars are from MTB which helps stability and safer control.

That's a picture of my Fitness bike from TREK that I enjoy a lot.

Also IMO proper helmets should introduced for cycling. At 60km/h the conventional helmets offer no protection.

There is already a discussion going on over using integral helmets going forward.
