Looks cool, probably miles ahead in driving dynamics over other Porsche models.
Stylewise it looks like a Porsche but thankfully without 911 styling cues. If they build it it may look very aggressive in real life.
McLaren should be very scared! Its a obvious destroyer of their new car !

I also like it. Such a car would allow Porsche to develop an alternative mid engine race platform to challenge Ferrari as well as provide a production car above the 911 to challenge Ferrari on that turf as well. In terms of styling I see Carrera GT in the doors and body sides, 911 in the rear window framing and roof line, 918 and 991 in the rear, and 904/Panamera in the front. However, these sketches are as preliminary as they could possibly be.

I think that there is a lucrative market for a Porsche M-E junior supercar in both coupe and spyder versions. No in-house cannibalization at all:
911 is a totally different concept (more mainstream, more everyday transport).
Why replace the R8, if VW Group can easily charge more (say 458 or McLaren money) for a Porsche than a comparable Audi? Audi could never charge Ferrari money for their excellent R8 V10, for example.
Lamborghini attracts a different type of buyer compared to Porsche, and multicar owners would buy both and more, anyway.

My point was that the car would also be sold in markets and to people who would not exclusively buy cabriolets.
Why not 2 versions (open and closed) as competitors do to satisfy everybody?

That's why it would not have occurred to me to ask: "Why the hell does it have a top?".

You deserve an explanation. Whenever Porsche has stepped into the super premium sport car market it has usually been topless. I assume this will be a model above the 911 range therefore super premium. Capice?
BTW, I hope and pray that the exhaust does not sound like a Prius and price it below $250,000.

I must have missed the topless versions of the 959 and GT1 Street. 
In my book that just leaves the Carrera GT that qualifies as a topless super premium sports car.

Of course the reference to "top-modell" did not seem to fit
This project has been, according to various sources, abandoned because Porsche apparently went ahead and developed a Boxster entry model below the current 255 hp 2.9 l Boxster. Rumors indicate 200 hp for the new entry level model, price tag should be under 40 k EUR(39k or so).
