2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Another back to back flyaway race ....

I can't see this race going to anyone except Vettel. The McLarens can challenge in both qualification and in the race but Vettel just seems to have a little bit more in reserve just when it's needed.

Ferrari's challenge appears to be floundering at the moment - which I didn't expect given their excellent winter testing form.

    I'm also disappointed with Mercedes.

I am glad to see both Petrov and Heidfeld doing well for Renault - they just need to be more consistent.

I think Button will again do well ...

A key issue for Webber will be getting hold of KERS. He was a sitting duck in Malaysia without it whereas Vettel still kept his race position.

Alonso's DRS failed - Ferrari needs to improve reliability of this additional bits of technology.

I'll be away when the next race is held - I'll only get to watch it when I get back ...

    Gooooooo VETTEL!!!

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Vettel is the bright side of F1. A talented driver who also comes across as very enthusiastic and always with a happy smile. In a world of grim faces and prima donna attitudes Vettel is like fresh air.

I also respect Adrian Newey immensely, the only designer/engineer who has won the championship with three different teams (Wiliams, McLaren, RBR)

Ferrari seems to be sliding to its "pre-Todt, Brawn, Schumacher"  self, which is not good for F1.

So right about that, Adrian is a genius and true gearhead.

I think F1 has beautiful years ahead, if only they don't change the rules too much... "green" racing only makes so much sense after all.. recent trends are scary and could kill the sport. I don't want to see 2.2L 4cyl turbo engines... Need to save on CO2 emissions, perhaps we should address other sources such as 7 billion people

In terms of near future, I hope Lotus and Mercedes can have successes and wins. Then I'd love to see Virgin Racing come up and take points consistently. That would be sweet, I am just happy the manufacturing teams are given a run for their money by enthusiasts and wealthy individuals, etc. It means F1 is very much alive and kicking

Guess again. We are currently running 2.4 litre V8s. Thew new engines will be turbocharged 1.6 litre, inline fours. Smiley

    FERRARI RULES!!!

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

1.6L Turbo engines, right up Mugen Honda alley. Or any ricers in L.A.

Lotus Renault has shown they have the pace, maybe better than Ferrari, wonder if Alonso is thinking maybe he might have a better chance in a Renault?

Red Bulls is still unreal fast, unreal.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

    Surprisingly poor start by Vettel.

Even more surprisingly stupid by Button on the 1st pitstop. Wow.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Weber is absolutely on a tear, very good driving in a very very fast car.

What's wrong with Alonso? He is way off the pace set by Massa.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

    Has F1 come alive

Could be that the new rules, new tyres, DRS, KERS all contrubute!

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Stunning drive by Weber, Vettel was lucky to keep 2nd place, if the GP last an extra 2 laps, Weber would have passed him too, at one point Weber was almost a minute behind vettel.

Congrats to Hamilton for a superb drive to over come the superior speed of the Red Bulls.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Personally I think this is the most exciting race so far in the young season, watching Weber climb up the leader board is just unreal.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Fabulous race !   to every driver  !

Vettel made a bad start (his mistake) and RBR's 2 stop strategy proved wrong. Otherwise, McLaren wouldn't have a chance. Excellent for Vettel to finish second on a day like today.

RB is the car to beat (yet). Webber's late charge points to that.

    Quo vadis Scuderia Ferrari Smiley

What was Button doing in RBR's box at the pit stop is beyond me Smiley

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Hamilton won because of his driving, if RB didn't make the mistakes they made today, they would of won again. Vettel needs everything to go right for him and when they don't he chokes. Amazing drive by Hamilton, and god knows I'm not a fan of him, but his overtaking maneurvers were on a different level than the rest of the grid, no wonder he was so emotional after the race. The best drive of any driver in many races. Kudos to Hamilton.

Not bad for the second driver  a couple of more laps and Webber would have passed Vettel starting form 18th! I'm so happy for him. Go Webber!

The Mercedes have now overtaken the Ferraris in performance, way to go Ferrari. Lets see what Rosberg does next few races. Alonso lost his chances first on the start, loosing his spot to Massa, which meant Massa had pick to when to come in for the first tire change, and that meant Alonso had to stay out for an extra lap and ended up 9th by the time he came came out of boxes stuck behind Schumi. Thats three out of three bad grid starts by Alonso this year, he lost places in all three races at the start. Does not look good at all for Ferrari this year.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Best dry GP for years IMHO.  Pirelli tyres have made a big difference to strategies.

Interesting comment by Webber - "You may as well give qualifying a miss and save the tyres for the race" - said a bit tongue in cheek but interesting nevertheless...

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

I think everyone is getting a bit carried away that the new format is working etc etc based on today's race. Let's look at it critically: if it's not because of Vettel's poor start, RBR would not have for that strategy and he would have pulled away at the front and we would have a race that is like Malaysia at the front. The second element was Webber. Had he not have car problems in P3 and subsequently Q1 and started 18th, we would not have seen the entertainment we saw today. So in conclusion, sure it was a great race, but what I'm saying is that don't expect this to be the case again in Turkey and beyond. Chances are it will be a Red Bull procession at the front all year long.

Yes but it was still great entertainment, and really good to see MW do that unreal drive. Smiley

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Great to watch. Would like to add that, if I am not mistaken, KERS on the Red Bull did not function properly once more.

I agree 100%  Smiley there may be a odd race every now and then due to weather, or fortuitus factors like today, but its clear by now that the rest of the season is going to be a RB parade, even worse than the season of the Brawn GP car and the diffusor.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

On equal terms, Red Bulls are the fastest by a mile, even without KERS.

Weber is also faster than Vettel, he is consistently 2-3 seconds faster than any one, including Vettel. There is no question Weber is the faster driver, but he is not the sexy marketable type like Vettel which is why he got shafted last year, plus his legendary bad luck also didn't help :)

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

One of the best races I've witnessed in years!!

Huge respect to Webber and Hamilton for today's race!

    Button's move was hilarious

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Haha, Butt was too eager to get on with his tyre change due to Vett up his butt for his, silly schoolboy mistake.

Webber, his the man of this race imo, nobody expected him to get on the podium (accept me ) and you could see his delight in doing so. awesome.

    Roll on Turkey...

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

I think Button secretly wants to jump ship and join Red Bulls for the faster car.

But I think Alonso might be more eager than Button.

Re: 2011 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

That was a great race. RBR totally gave it away, but still a great performance from Hamilton!

Great to see a close finish after such a spread quali... i was scared that time differences are really too much off... never have we see such gaps in the top ten. They used to come close easy within one second.

Glad to Mercedes coming up slowly and not fighting for #3 against Ferrari!

It turns out Adrian Sutil was involved in a nightclub brawl after the Chinese F1 Grand Prix
