    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

    REALZEUS:
    reginos:

Most important, the chassis and underpinnings of the E class coupe are derived from the superior E class. The floorpan and some other elements could be C class.

The C class coupe is just as a C class saloon with different body.

What you are describing is technically impossible. The floorpan is an integral part of the chassis (which is not really a chassis nowadays). According to most sources, the E Cope is derived from the C Class chassis but with E Class styling. I am not being absolute but most facts hint towards such a conclusion.

Why? Things like brakes, front suspension and rear axle could be sourced from the E class. When the UK Press refer to E class underpinnings what else could they mean Smiley

Besides, logically Mercedes wouldn't build two identical coupes (C class and E class) with only the exterior styling differing.

I wouldn't put my hand on the fire, for any of these of course!

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

Reginos, priorly you said "floorpan". The floorpan is the underside of the chassis. What you are now describing (brakes, suspensions etc) are components and yes these could come from the E Class even though personally I have no clue regarding their origins.

Logic also stipulates that Mercedes, like VW does with many of its models, would love to build the two coupes on the same underpinnings since that means increased economies of scales.

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

By floorpan I meant the sheet metal stampings that form the foundation of the monocoque. Some people call this "the chassis", a leftover expression from the time cars had a rolling chassis. Others include the suspension and other components in their definition of chassis.

The E class coupe floorpan is probably the same as in C class. But the floorpan is the least important component of the chassis and determines mostly the size of the car. More importantly, the brakes, suspension, steering and I believe running gear in some versions at least come from the E class saloon. This the reason the E class coupe is a higher model in the M-B hierarchy  than the old CLK and also the upcoming C class coupe.

    Good to discuss with you

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

Indeed the definition of the word chassis, or monocoque as it should be called nowadays, is somewhat vague. Strictly speaking it should not  include the suspension, brakes, steering system and of course the drivetrain. More losely speaking though, it includes everything but the drivetrain.

I will have to disagree on the importance of the floorpan though. By determining the sheer size of the car, it also determines the whole arhcitecture and everything is based on it. At any rate, an official clarification on this issue would be welcome.

    The pleasure is mine.

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

Interesting. So let's discuss BMW 1M then. It uses M3 suspension, diff, brakes, rear subframe. So 1M uses M3 chassis then? Would appreciate your views on this...

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

    intouch1:

c-class chassis for all i know.

Yepp, that's true. That is also the reason why there's no Airmatic for the Coupé.

Mercedes first wanted to sell the E-Class Coupé again under the CLK-moniker before they switched to the E-Class-name literally in the last minute. I once shot a picture of a prototype which even still had the CLK-badge...so you can imagine that this car wasn't planned to be an E-Class. But I think this should'n matter because the C- and the E-Class share a lot of parts anyway...

Most probably the CLK 350 badge on this disguised car was used as a decoy. Like manufacturers often do trying to fool spy photographers.

No, this car was completely disguised some days before that shot and it was built at a time when it was planned to sell it as a CLK.

    Re: Mercedes C63 AMG

    oh i am already

it really is a monster of an engine...and while i am still and will be a porsche guy....the 63 is the best engine i have ever driven or heard

at least for normal DD. for spirited driving the gt2 is still more fun but demands much more input from the driver.
