    918 Spyder

Those who have placed their orders for 918 Spyder...they were able to see the pictures of  the final version of the car or the car live??? Or they just trusted the Porsche, following the skeches? And when we finally will see the pictures of the serial version of the 918 Spyder?

    Re: 918 Spyder

The big question is who has placed an order at all... I saw many people interested until the final price was announced; then all rejected...

    Re: 918 Spyder

Its all a bad joke now..............$845K US................   maybe $645K........  Porsche AG, RC, if you are listening, you can take that to the Bank.

    Re: 918 Spyder

    I don't know,but I would ask for a test-drive at least,before placing an order worth 845-645K

Thats a great idea, but I can assure you, there will be no test drives......  maybe a ride........

Take that to the bank. The car will sell out as will the 918 TTS. These purchases are emotional and not rational.

+1 ! and I would assume that this is true for at least 80 % of all P-drivers ( I am one of them...)...

    Re: 918 Spyder

I am in this business of selling this spectacular 918 Spyder; it's what I do ; and so far the response has not been posistive, at $845K US.

In my opinion, it will take a long time to sell them out at this rate, which thus far has been , Zero................I'm not seeing the emotion ,so far.

Question : what value is there to a 50 -60 year old as new condition TV  vs a same aged restored classic sports car .  There is no demand for the former - it can't compete with today's 3D HD TV. The latter has a rabid following for it's heritage , usability , soul and passion that it's owners say is missing from modern cars.

With cars becoming more dependent on complex electronics, and with leading edge electronics becoming out of date every few  years , what is the long term value of these next gen hybrids - esp when asking near one miillion dollars to be a beta tester for what is essentially a super high priced  electronic appliance marketed as a sports car.

Hard to buy and hide  a vehicle like this for  30 +years when the  the aging failing cracking rusting  circuit boards will have been out of production for decades  and this performance car  becomes merely a static display because no one then will even know how to get it to start up, much less drive it down a road.

    Re: 918 Spyder

Absolutely Brilliant ! That is so well expressed.................this new direction of Technology is so transient.......the real issue with the 918, is that even the most enthusiastic Porsche devote' could care less, if it's a Hybrid........... it just needs to be a super efficient,  Atmo , or Turbocharged power plant......then it would sell, quickly, for less of a price point. We shall see if it works, their way.

its not that beautiful, its not that powerful yet its too damn expensive

most of you know the facts but comparing it with the limited turbo S 918 edition
the turbo S has 530hp available all the time
the 918 500hp + (Two electric motors 218hp) I don't know if its available all the time or not
both of them sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.1

    turbo S 160.700$
    918 spyder 845.000$ Smiley

Any real car enthusiast knows full well Porcshe could have built a much   lighter 918 Spyder in a traditional drivetrain with a 700 + hp motor for $500-600K .. The $300K premium the buyer pays for a hybrid powertrain goes towards Porsche " green " PR fund , IMO.

One will never get remotely close to recoving  that  dollar difference in fuel savings even if one hits the 78 MPG target , at the very few thousand miles driven most of these cars will rack up over many years of ownership.

    Re: 918 Spyder

i think it's a tester vehicle from Porsche to see if there is demand for this new "green" direction with the wealthy. Do they at all care? Are they interested in a green Porsche.. etc..

The price is steep, of course it will bring $ to VW Group, but it's a true halo car and Porsche needs it. Also, it will probably actually race and that alone will get a lot of people interested in buying one.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

My dealer tells me that I can be the first on my block to order a 918. PAG wants $200,000 up front to confirm the order. It is refundable until the second $200,000 comes due at the time of starting the manufacturing process. An interest-free loan of $200,000 while waiting to see if I will be able to comfortably drive the car must appeal to them quite a bit, but not so much to me. I was eager to purchse a Carrera GT because I viewed it as a culmination car from a different Porsche planet. It seemed iconic at the time, and still does to me. The 918, on the other hand, seems like the front end of a yet-to-be-perfected progression of hybrid vehicle concepts. There could be many more advances made by Porsche or others that might render the 918 quaint in only a few years. Another thing that has cooled my interest in the 918 is my memory of the purchase process with the Carrera GT. USA customers were routinely treated poorly compared to Euorpean customers when it came to timely information about options and feature availability. I was extremely annoyed for a long period of time during the "evolution" of what would be offered to "favorite" Porsche customers compared to what would be available to me to order. I'm interested, but very far from putting down $200,000 just to get a peek.

    Re: 918 Spyder

Mike,   I think your esteemed opinion, says it all. Porsche has made public, the business plan; of how much; how many, when, and the ordering process..........I don't think that they can ammend it, at this point in time...........I don't think they can change anything, at all. I'm not seeing any takers, in my environment..............maybe in Saudi Arabia. Those front axle portal motors/ generators are trick though.........Note that the first generation show car, had a PDK input, hybrid drive, into the gearbox. That's not been mentioned recently. I just want the RS Spyder race engine for the street, in larger displacement........having said this ...... Enjoy your GT !!!!

Porsche did not set the price of the car in a vacuum. They know the market and will sell the entire production. It may not sell well in the US but considering the new markets in Russia and China, model sell out it will not be a problem.

    Re: 918 Spyder

I think that is an excellent point............my mistake. I will be curious to see how quickly this example sells out to emerging markets, who have no history with super high end exotics. I guess the US doesn't count any more. Please keep me posted with any sell out data that is factual, from around the World......

    Hey Guys,

With the upcoming 918  what will happen to the prices of the CGT's??   Also is this car a buy and hold car (CGT) and what are good prices for them if I'm able to find one....?  Thanks for the help:)

I actually heard somewhere that most 918 are a going to the US but maybe this was just a preliminary order list. Smiley

There were plenty of people such as myself who confirmed interest in the 918 by returning a form to PCNA.  This was well before the pricing was announced.  Now, I think interest is somewhat less than before because the price level is double the Carrera GT's final price and three times the Carrera GT's originally estimated price.  Or is that merely a small accounting detail?
