    RMS Leaks- Whats the latest

    I changed the oil on a friend's car and noticed that there was an oil leak between the engine and transmission.  The car just came out of warranty.  The dealer says Porsche does not pay for the repair.

    I thought Porsche was quitely paying for it.  They quoted $2400 for the repair.  Is that the norm and engines are not being replaced now?  She just had to pay for a new water pump and radio, all weeks after the warranty expired.

    Given the financial situation Porsche is facing, I would not be surprised if their policy on fixing RMS and IMS failures has changed radically.

    Depending upon what constitutes "just came out of warranty'  I would not accept the dealer's refusal to at least negotiate the price of the "RMS" oil leak repair. Replacement of the engine is not always required.  If the warranty expired within the last 2-3 months (or less) I would contact PCNA and request that the claim be reviewed.

     I guessing here but I think things would stay the same; RMS repair is part of Porsche's "manufacturing process." Smiley

    The _perfect_ engine could be manufactured, one without any chance of RMS failure, but it's too expensive. 

    Instead Porsche does the best it can and expects some to fail. Some say as many as 25% fail! Anyway, Porsche decided it's "smarter" to fix the ones that fail as a "quality control" method.

    AFAIK, this is a true account. I _DO_ know they can mfgr engines with "zero" chance of a RMS failure but it's too expensive.

    Hello guys,

     

    Good new for the owners of the new 997 mod 2009 facelift with DFI motor, this motor has separate oil tanks, so the carter remains dry, no leak of the rms to be expected

    I've been dreaming for a Porsche since I was a kid and now, wanting to buy one, I am held back by the horror stores of IMF and block liners.

     

    Might just get a civic... :P
