Nice car with nice detailing for unrestricted highway driving.
Unfortunately, very few people will drive this car to its potential for practical and legal reasons. In most places, outside (some areas in) Germany it will end up being used as an overpriced and overspecced 520d.

Very nice car!!!
Let`s hope the spec`s and performance be also great!!!
Exactly. I love the design so subtle and discrete. Nothing screaming to look at me, I even like the mirrors unlike M3. Hoping for good numbers in the performance front too.

You want specs ? Here you go: over 100 kilograms heavier than previous M5; V8 instead of V10; twin-turbo crap instead of NA. this is just a 550i with more power and DCT transmission. And it looks like a bloated whale. FAIL.
You don't like it then......

Bloated whale?
The new 5 series is actually the best looking BMW currently on the market, it's looks lean and powerful with the best proportions. Some might even argue that it's the best designed BMW sedan ever.
The M5 treatment makes it even better with aggressive lines and features. Only thing missing is a domed hood signalling power underneath.
If not for the fact that I just bought a Alpina B7 AND the M5 doesn't looks like it's going to get the xDrive treatment, I could have put down deposit for one of the firsts in Canada.

One more thing to end this bash with, doesn't the hood of this car remind you of a...triceratops ? :)
Yes, but only if there was a triceratops born with badly over boosted electric steering.
Amazing that a rechip, some black wheels, a rear splitter and slight fender flares can double the cost of what is 5 series.

Just out of curiosity: What would this "rechip" be?
You are aware that the M5 engine and the bi-turbo charged V8 of the 550i don't have a single part in common? Not even the crankcase?

The front looks like a shark - angry! I like it!
More like a shark-whale :D
And from the side, like a white whale. You can clearly see the resemblance in the pictures below.
Except the white whale is prettier :) And BTW, the old model looks much more like a shark, then this moby dick wanna be
Whoopsie:
Bloated whale?
Yes, the front end looks like a bloated whale. And it's no surprise, since this car is based on the 7-series platform, the biggest of them all!

And others might argue that it's the most boring 4 door sedan bmw has ever made..

Actually, that isn't my quote, I said it's a 550i with more power and dct transmission. And they have very much in common, it's bassically the same engine with different turbos and different exhaust manifold! And maybe some internal parts changed to cope with the extra power but that's it. From bmw press release:
The first modern turbocharged M engine: twin scroll twin turbo technology with a patented exhaust manifold.
Using BMW’s innovative, 4.4L reverse-flow V8 engine with High Precision Direct Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin-scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized.

Sure, it isn't just a "rechip" like the above poster said, but still, it doesn't quallify in any way as a "brand new engine". It's just a 550i with more power, like I said.

What can you tell us about the suspension setup, transmission options and will it have Xdrive? What about weight? Anything major changed over the current 5 series cars?

It`s not that simple as saying: "it`s a 550i with more power"...
In fact saying that the 550i = M5 is like saying the VW Beetle = 911
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

I was not aware of that even the crankcases were different. My full apologies to the people in the Munich!
My comments were actually more rhetorical than meant to be verbatim. I may need a custom icon to warn that in future posts.
However, does the fact the its motor shares no components with the proletariat 550 then mean that the standard proletariat 5r V8 motor is not really worthy?
Design wise, it does look a bit animalistic, and its something porkish, and ancient or amphibian, but not svelte or stylish
People the 5 series has turned into a sow and no one wants to admit it, so there I said it! If they make a M5 RS, the BMW nomenclature department will have a hard time choosong between Renn Sow or Renn Sport for their internal documents
I am sure it will be a wonderful go fast four door. It has to be better than the last one wich was a failure.

the m engine has nothing to do with the normal v8 as rc already mentioned elsewhere.
