    Off-road underbody protection

I am thinking of moving into the current generation Cayenne from my existing 4 year old CT.

The Porsche site gives summary details of the off-road underbody protection" package:

    - Rocker panel protection with integrated skid plates, reinforced engine skid plate, additional fuel tank and rear-axle protection, 2nd tow lug

Does anyone know what the "Off-road underbody protection" package adds in weight to the car?

Does the second fuel tank take the car above the 100L mark?

    Cheers,

    Ado

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

    Ado,

welcome onboard! The sentence came across wrong, the package offers additional protection for rear axle and fuel tank, not an additional reservoir per se. Some models do offer a 100 litre fueltank as a no-cost option which seem to get along with the offroad protection as well.

Additional weight should be negligible, especially as it is located at the underside of the car.

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

It shouldn't be much weight.  I have the rocker panel skid plates on my Cayenne and they are made of aluminum.  I also replaced the standard plastic engine plate with the steel one, which turned out to be only thin sheet metal - not much heavier than the plastic one really (and not much more protection either).  I haven't seen the fuel tank or differential protection but I would think they would be similar.

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

As the others already told you: no 2nd fuel tank available and added weight is under 20 kg as far as I remember. Shouldn't be a problem, especially on the Turbo.

If you do some light off-roading or even some serious snow driving, go for it. For street driving, not really worth it(or actually necessary).

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

The rocker panel skid plates are actually very useful and fully functional for off-road use. That area of the underbody seems to see a lot of action when going over rough terrain. You can see scrapes and a few dents on the underside of mine. I have a friend with a Toyota 4Runner that had the step up side panel, similar to the one available for the Cayenne. These are not a good idea for off-road use. When we were going over some challenging roads in Utah those side steps got beat up pretty bad, bent actually, in a very obvious way..

GM Austin - you seem to be one of the few owners that actually use your Cayenne off-road (my guess is mainly that there are not many unpaved situations in Europe, compared to lots in especially western North America) - are you basically happy with the Cayenne in the situations you've used it in?   And any views on how the new Cayenne might compare off-road to yours?

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

My existing Cayenne has only seen relatively light off road usage (muddy/rocky fields when shooting) and in the snow in the French/Swiss alps.  Given I learnt to drive on a Toyota Land Cruiser long wheel base "troop carrier" in rural Australia I am not sure that even that represents true off road driving!

But they are not cheap to fix or to retrofit gear to (certainly not in the UK).  If I go ahead with my order I will probably order them.  But what is causing hesitation is that second hand values have collapse in the UK market while the new car Porsche prices have increased - makes for a more expensive handover than I had anticipated.  Although other manufacturers are offering discounts...

I've been very happy with the Cayenne's off-road ability. The combination of good off-road abity and exceptional highway manners makes it a winner for me. In my view ground clearance is the most important feature and the PASM makes that possible. As far as I know that has not changed in the new model. After ground clearance I would think off-road driving experence is the next most important factor. I see that the new Cayenne no longer has a low range. A shame. Not essential, but it makes things more controllable.

    Re: Off-road underbody protection

I have been with Gary driving his Cayenne  and, off-road, he drives like he's leading Dakar or the Baja 500. He's a monster!!!

If he says get the off-road package, get the package.
