A Turbo without a big rear spoiler is not a Turbo!

so i hope is an early mule of the Turbo only for "low speed" testing, without the right aerodynamic parts!

It is the mule of 991 Turbo.

Production of current 997.2 Turbo S stops at 04/2012. So, think carefully... 991 Turbo will be shown much earlier then we anticipated.

Active aerodynamics will be the key part of new 991 Turbo exterior design.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Sorry for having started this in the wrong place Ron, I thought the Turbo warranted its own thread ;) The bigger standard 991 spoiler configuration seems to be able to provide more downforce then the 997. Would there be another technical reason for having the traditional TT fixed wing? If it's for show only it would be tacky IMHO. That's what separates Porsches from after market GTIs—it's mostly substance, not bling for bling's sake.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

The wing probably hasn't even been designed yet, and this car doesn't need any aero in this type of test. I bet you the ONLY thing from this mule we'll see on the production version is the body shape, and side rocker panels. The intakes, Carrera wing, Carrera bumpers, I'm sure will be all replaced with something much more "Turbo" style. It's way too early to judge at this point. If anything, I'd take these photos as a reminder of how great the widebody car will look! Not only is it wider, but curvier as well! I hope the S models get the widebody as well.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Interesting to see the first mule of the forthcoming Turbo.

As said here before, it definitely has to be the Turbo, since this is the first mule with real air intakes instead of decals. Regarding the missing Turbo rear wing, I guess the standard rear wing is absolutely sufficient, but in the end we will see a new wing that is charactaristic for the Turbo. Smiley

BTW have you noticed, they've installed the (997)-exhaust tips upside down. Smiley

According to my source new 991 Turbo will be introduced in late 2012. Start of sale early 2013.

BTW, "last edition" od 997.2 Turbo is coming ASAP. Car codes are 997 470 and 997 670. It is already in dealers system as is Pana Diesel and Turbo S.

    100% agree.Smiley I'm totally convinced about, and

we will see the Turbo not before 2013 at the dealers for sure.
Btw.: a Turbo without rearwing is not a traditional Turbo - and yes it needs the air intakes as well.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I should have been clearer in my post about the turbo's wing and intakes.  What I should have said is that I realize that the turbo needs both, but that I don't like the older 996 and 997 designs.  If possible, I would like to see a turbo wing that is hidden to a better degree than now, but is extendable at will.  It could be a slightly larger wing than the non-aspirated cars, but still be more discreet in my view.

On the intakes, surely Porsche can do better than the current design...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I agree 100% about the intakes. They look very downmarket.

As to the wings IMO the 996 Turbo wing had the right balance between aggression and elegance when retracted. The 997 wing I don't like. It is too in your face on an otherwise benign design. On the GT3/GT2 the big wings look balanced because the whole of these cars is aggressive.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

The spoiler is too in your face? What would you say about the GT3 and GT2 wings?

BTW, who is to say the C4S will not have side vents?

Also, are you all claiming that the turbo tail has no functionality and Porsche tacked it on all to distinguish the turbo from the other 911's?

If the Turbo isn't due to be out until the end of 2012 or 2013 why in hell are they testing the car now almost two years from its introduction. Must I remind you all Porsches's are evolutionary and not revolutionary and thus do not require rigorous testing?

Like I mentioned above the styling of the GT cars as a whole is aggressive (lower stance, wider front track, larger front intakes, bigger front spoiler) so the wings blend more. Moreover there are also motorsport associations with these models.

The styling of the Turbo I find very benign with the exception of the size and shape of the rear wing which IMO doesn't blend very well.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I'm sure they are still designing it, but if it's not needed than not having it will be fine by me. The only pretty TT trunklid was that of the 993TT. 996 and 997 never did it for me. The 991 carreras will have eseentially what used to be the Turbo downforce figures im assuming

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Such testing is needed because making a perfect car (the 911) even better is a very hard thing to do. Porsche likes to keep the design, emotion, feeling, sound, and smell similar throughout the years, but they must try as hard as they can to make it better. Better than 'good enough', better than 'perfect', better than the last 911.

I don't think it is reasonable to expect an NA 911 like the C4S to have side intakes such as these. The intakes are only utilized to feed the intercoolers so this must be a Turbo.Smiley

    1.  Those air inlet vents could only be there for one reason.

    2. If the TT were not being winter tested and having its ABS and ESP systems developed in Scandinavia by now, then the next winter testing season would be too short to ensure adequate testing and reiterative development loops (if necessary) in time for a launch before calendar year 2013. Winter testing isn't just about checking that a car will start on a cold winter morning.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Winter testing is not just about making the car start cold... It's usually the final stages of testing because the snow surface requires all systems to operate in full harmony. If anything is not set corrected to work with something else, than you will notice this misbehaviour in the snow the most.

The above is certainly an early TT model due to the wider hips, side intake, exhaust positioning, front bumper...

Thanks Nuenelf.  I am starting to like the rear more and more, especially the horizontal "shelf" created by the new spoiler treatment.  Gives me hope that the turbo will have its spoiler more integrated into the rear panels...

The ability to start in very cold weather is usually tested in a cold chamber, where one can control temperature and other parameters (exposure duration, e.g.) much better than in the open.
