    Cayenne Diesel "recall"

Porsche needs to update the ECU software, otherwise the engine could not start anymore under certain circumstances.

Affected owners (almost 7000 worldwide) will get a notice from their local dealership.

Only the new/latest Cayenne model is affected.

Man, my best friend has one. I'll make sure they talk with the dealership.

RC is the diesel coming to the US in 2012?

I don't know, honestly. I only heard a rumor that VW seems to consider a possible production or at least assembly plant for a VW, Audi and Porsche SUV model in the US. Seems to be in it's early stages though.

I'm going to speculate here for a moment, and I have no real solid info to back this up. The Porsche and Ferrari dealership here is a branch of one in miami, so all allocations and sales are shared with them. Over here they brought a very small number of cayenne diesels and they sold out right away, now they are selling like crazy and shipments are coming in fast. I don't know if this means that the parent dealership in Miami is using this smaller market as a test ground, but there could be something there.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel "recall"

With rising petrol prices, Diesel engines could have a huge success in the US. So maybe...

I never understood why Americans don't like Diesel engines, the US is actually predestined for high power high torque mega monster Diesel engines for those big SUVs.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel "recall"

Many years ago US manufacturers introduced diesel versions of existing gasoline motors on their passenger cars. Since these motors were not really designed to take the compression of a diesel, failure rates were very high. This left diesels with a very bad reputation for reliability here in the US. I think some of this experience is still with us. Also, many US buyers want a very quiet vehicle and the general image of the diesel engine here is primarily from trucks where the motor is very noisy and is often seen to emit some soot. This is a difficult impression for the car buyer to overcome when considering a diesel.

Interesting read, thank you Gary.  Smiley

I had a X6 35d loaner for a one week ski vacation last year and I was deeply impressed with that car. Performance under 200 kph (125 mph) was pretty adequate for the german Autobahn, the ride was very comfortable (and quiet) and Diesel consumption was slightly over the half of what my X5 M eats on the same route.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel "recall"

And then when Jane Fonda drove a diesel Rabbit (Golf) in the movie "The China Syndrome" it became the hottest car in Hollywood, circa 1979, the Prius of the day.

And then everyone was over it -- the ticka-ticka-ticka engine particularly -- and then the GM diesels bombed, as Gary points out.

And it's too bad, because we need them here. The MB Bluetech e350 got a lot of attention for awhile ... and when gas goes back over $4 a gallon, I'm sure it will get more.

I was just thinking today, a small to midsize SUV with a torquey diesel and four wheel drive would be just the ticket for running errands in the village and bringing things back up the hill.

Exactly!  I would love a small, diesel powered Porsche SUV!  Just the ticket!  I also agree about the fuel prices.  When there is sufficient incentive, the diesel will emerge as a reasonable solution.

Another recall has announced this year. The owners are now being informed to initiate the correction procedure for their vehicles. Not all models of the Cayenne are affected. The recall affects all trims for the Cayenne, including the base Cayenne, S, S Hybrid and Turbo models. Article source:  Headlight fault prompts Porsche Cayenne recall.

Not another one?! First I had to take the GT2 RS in for that driveshaft recall and now this 3 months later. mail

They are starting to be like any other manufacturer now. Too much volume and not enough quality control.

Well Mike, I think the problem in your particular case is more down to the fact that you have so many cars that the statistical probability of you not being affected by multiple recalls must be extremely low.  Smiley

Mike, you officially constitute a statistical sample size all by yourself :)
