    Dreadful Freedom

Rennteamers - a high class problem

About 2 years ago, I put myself on a waitlist for an SLS, thinking it would be, well, a very long wait.  ( 1 yr ago it looked like about 2013.)  As it turns out, my Gullwing has arrived.

Since it was way ahead of schedule, this creates a sports car dilemma.  The plan was to hold onto my 997.1 C4S until the 991 design was a couple years old and give Porsche the time to fix the inevitible bugs, and to hold onto a convertible BMW 3 for a summer car.  With the unanticipated landing of the SLS, that's 3 cars and 2 slots in my garage.  So one of them has to go.  And it isn't the SLS, which has been a fantasy car for years.  I am thinking its going to have to be the Porsche, with the 991 imminent.

I have had a 911 of some form or other for the last 13 years so this will be an odd thing, not to have one in the garage. Smiley  Drove it today and did not feel too nostalgic. Anyway, I think this is the plan - any votes against?

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

I vote in favor. The 991 is very close so the absence of a porsche in your life might just be what you need to make porsche ownership new and more exiting. while at the same time giving porsche the chance to iron out details on the first production series.

u won't miss a Porsche if you press the SLS Starterbutton.....

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

Won't express an opinion on which car you should get rid of because I happen to think that decision can really only be made be the individual concerned, but this question does arise in my mind:

Why has the SLS waiting list evaporated so rapidly? Smiley

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

I think the smart move would be sell your 997 as soon as possible. Once the 991 is launched, you may suffer a lower residual value. If you are placing your order straight after launch for a 991, the wait should be bearable - and as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder so you'll have something special to look forward to.

    +1
Also, i'm kinda concerned about the resale value. It's not that bad but way less than i expected.

Regardless, it's an amazing car. luv it!

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

On first waiting lists for SLS were lot of pure speculators. When they saw that money making will not be the case they evaporated. Simple as that. I would even add-thank God for that.

You get speculators expressing interest in and waving Letters of Intent for all cars which look like demand will initially exceed supply.

I just would have thought that Daimler would have enough experience of filtering them out not to have got caught out as badly as they did here.

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

The SLS is a great car, no doubt about it and probably the most attractive Mercedes sports car since the 300 SL Gullwing (the SLR McLaren was never my thing). I still think though that as soon as Mercedes puts the second SLS generation on the market, it will happen, resale value of the first one will drop substantially.

Still, To get that car  2 years before the expected date is a bit more than just speculators bailing out. I remember how crazy long the waiting list used to be in US for the SL.

I was hoping the same but i knew it wont be happening. I soooo wanna get one in black.

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

Pics coming in a day or two. Well - I did the deed and traded in a GT Silver C4S for the SLS. Emotionally it was tough (my daughter who is 7 got hysterically sad when she learned the porker was going to go). Some form of a Gullwing has been a fantasy of mine for over 20 years - when I first heard of the modern day SLS and got confirmed details prior to Frankfurt 2009, I made a deposit. What a car. It has far more physical presence in the flesh than in photos and videos. The front is huge, as is the noise and the rumble which is nothing like a Flat 6, that is for sure. I was able to put a few miles on tonight. Drives more like a Grand tourer than a sports car, a totally different feel than the 911. The doors are super cool and are not a big deal to close while seated, contrary to magazine reports. I have driven in many a Merc and nothing is like this car. I'll miss my 6 speed though, big time. Will be in the market in a couple years for a 991 convertible in place of my bimmer,

    Nice

    What color did you order?

Well, there are mixed signals coming from our Mercedes sources, so maybe you are lucky. Just came off the phone with somebody and she told me that there won't be a SLS successor but Mercedes wants to milk the cow as long as possible, so be ready for a facelift with some possible engine changes too.

If the SLR is any indicator, there will be plenty of special editions.

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

if they go porsche's way with the limited editions, then the original car will be the one with collectors value

saw this today at the local marina. It really is a beauty in the metal, pictures don't do this car any justice at all. and the color is spectacular.

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

the car is a beauty - no doubt! Anyhow, the market for cars above 200 kEur is very limited. As there are many already out there, Mercedes produces this cash cow like crazy, utilizes its SL production facilities before the push the next SL generation on the market. It seems the one who could afford and want one already got one. this also shows the falling prices. Currently you find new SLS with 20 % drop at the dealers, ready to take away. I have seen pre-owned cars with 5000 km with 25% under msrp. At the end, this is just a Mercedes with a value drop like any other. And as beauty it is, they already produced more of the new as of the legendery SL 300. So its not a collector car, probably never will be.

Yep,  but still a great looking, sounding and feeling car . This car in the second hand market is ( and will be ) a perfect purchase to have something that puts a smile on your face each time you drive it  and at a very good price .

Sorry but, SLS use proper DCT made by Getrag. Yes, this DCT likes to be used in auto(Sport or Sport + mode) but, the same is with PDK in 997.2 Turbo/Turbo S. Unlike you, I am very impressed with SLS DCT in auto modes.

    Re: Dreadful Freedom

that's good news to hear from you kreso.

i was a bit worried i would feel let down by the dct in the sls and its slow reaction to manual input.

i believe a future software recalibration might actually fix the problem.

at least good to know it is satisfactory in auto sport mode.

In fact it's the same tranny as in the 458, but yet they feel quite different. Smiley

no i had no chance to as all these cars are special order only. actually i had no chance to testdrive any of the cars i bought over the past ten years as i usually order before they are released to the market.

however, with the cars that i usually order, its a pretty safe bet except for the cobra.

when the sls came out, it was the only car i wanted. i was not choosing between it and a 458 for example. hence, no need for a test-drive really.

then again, surely i would not mind having a dealer where i could go for test runs in all the cars i aspire.

then again, it's better to be able to order the cars without a test-drive than to be able to go for a test-drive and not be in a position to order Smiley

a last resort would have been to have test-drives arranged on my travels. but usually i cannot be bothered when travelling on a tight schedule.

Yes, actually so good, that one forgets it is a DCT Smiley

Hope the manual mode will be corrected ...
