    Bahrain F1 GP called off...

Bahrain Grand Prix organisers have called off the opening race of the Formula One season due to political unrest in the country.

"The Bahrain International Circuit today announced that the Kingdom of Bahrain would withdraw from hosting this year's F1 Grand Prix race so that the country can focus on its process of national dialogue," race organisers said in a statement.

With civil unrest ongoing in the Gulf state, the season-opener at the Sakhir circuit had been in doubt for some time with Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone revealing at the weekend that he would leave the final call over whether to run the race to Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

"We must focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting to a later date," said the Crown Prince on Monday, after informing Ecclestone of the BIC's decision to withdraw from hosting the event.

“At the present time the country’s entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain.

"Although Bernie Ecclestone had graciously made clear a decision on the race was entirely Bahrain's to make and was not yet required, we felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain's Formula One race to a later date.

“After the events of the past week, our nation’s priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united."

The Bahrain Grand Prix had been scheduled for March 13, and the curtain raiser for the 2011 season will now take place at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, on March 27.

Bahrain has featured on the Formula One calendar for the last seven seasons. It is not yet known whether the race will be rescheduled until later in the season, or cancelled entirely.

The final pre-season tests ahead of the 2011 Formula One season will now be held in Barcelona from March 8-11.

It was to be expected. No harm done, it's a boring track and a dull place anyway! Too bad about the people there though.

Sensible decision - could be re-scheduled for later in the season..

"Dull country", Depends who you ask. But the track is amazing!!

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

It's an amazing track and place in general. The spending habit is just scary and comparable to some wealthy guy's 18 year old daughter who collects shoes and diamonds all day long. hehe.

I guess the 2011 will have enough races to compensate for the cancellation, but i hope Bahrain figures things out peacefully and effectively now that the spark is ignited.

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

What's so nice about the track? It can't hold a candle compared to all time classics like Monza, Spa or Silverstone... Smiley

My only gripe is that it is a track that traditionally suited Ferrari.Smiley

Half of the tracks are very new, that doesn't making them bad !!

Have you been to the Bahrain track??

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

I Honestly think that all tanks should be painted in Red Bull colors from now on.....thats one cool tank!

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

I say have the F1 drivers swap the F1 cars for those tanks and let them shoot at each other on the track... it would porbably be more fun to watch than the actual race...

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

After all the talk about 'more important things going in Bahrain' (i.e. determining the future of the country etc), F1 has now set a deadline for the Bahrain F1 GP organisers to reply as to whether or not they can host a race: the answer must come by May 2011

The Bahraini government clearly wants the GP to be held there this year ...

I think the last message they should get is that it's business as usual ...

The Bahrain ruling family cares more about the prestige of hosting this event than about democracy and meeting the concerns of its citizens.

The report is missing the point IMO

    http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/6970344/Gracia-Defends-Bahrain-Report

It's not whether it is physically safe to go and whether things look normal on the ground ... it's whether going there supports a regime that brutalised its people and how associating with that reflects on F1.

Good ... the right outcome happened ... the race has been called off for 2011 ... and the Bahraini royal family has accepted the outcome.

I feel sorry for the Indian organisers and fans ... they had a race on 30 Oct then it was rescheduled for 11 Dec and now it's back to 30 Oct again ...

All those plane tickets, hotel bookings etc that were booked, amended and now need to be amended again ... what a PITA

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

I even booked my vacation in South Africa (Cape Town and the Garden Route) from Tue 29 Nov till Sun 18 Dec on the basis that the final race of the 2011 F1 calendar would be in Brazil on Sun 27 Nov.

When they planned to hold an additional race on Sun 11 Dec, I was thinking ... that's just great ... I follow the whole year and then they add a new grand finale while I'm away on holiday.

I guess the consolation would have been that the Drivers' title will (IMHO definitely), and (possibly) the constructor's title, be decided well before the last race.

I still think it's just a question of time before Vettel does it again.

The good news is you won't have to change your vacation plans - or miss out on the last race.  I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here on the southern tip of Africa.  Smiley

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

Zayed Alzayani (Chairman of the Bahrain GP) is living in his own bubble ...

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/interviews/article-23969259-our-grand-prix-is-far-bigger-than-all-britain-has-to-offer-says-bahrain-chief.do

    1. The head of the Bahrain GP remarked that he didn't see banners everywhere advertising the British GP. It's because the UK has so many different sports that it takes part in. Life in the UK doesn't stop for one event in what is a minor sport in the UK. This is a country with political, economic, business, social, sporting etc activity in literally millions of different fields. The UK operates in a multi-dimensional way compared to minor countries like Bahrain (where there is some oil, shopping, desert, a GP race, political oppression by a Sunni minority on a Shia majority and not much else).

    2. The F1 teams are happy to race in Bahrain when it is safe there. If the country is in political turmoil, they are right to be unhappy about travelling there. IMO there is no inconsistency in that.

I could pick many more gaping holes in this guy's opinion but these struck me as being obvious ones ...

According to the CIA World Factbook ... (just click on 'Expand All' for the full detail) ..

    Bahrainhttps://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ba.html

    UKhttps://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/uk.html

How anyone can compare a place like Bahrain with the UK is simply comical ... and this guy's opinion should be regarded accordingly IMO.

Re: Bahrain F1 GP called off...

I'm surprised people are shocked that Bahrain still paid the F1 hosting fees. The pot still needs to be big enough to pay out the teams. Bernie was hardly going to subsidise it himself.
