997 Carrera GTS - some interesting performance figures you may not know

    Carrera GTS Coupe

Manual:  0-100 kph in    4.6 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 14.8 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.2 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 14.1 sec.

    Carrera GTS Cabriolet

Manual:  0-100 kph in    4.8 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 15.7 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.4 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 15.0 sec.

    For comparison:

    911 Speedster

                     0-100 kph in   4.4 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 15.0 sec.

Identical to GTS Cabriolet with PDK and Sport Chrono Plus !

    Carrera S

Manual:  0-100 kph in    4.7 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 15.2 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.5 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 14.8 sec.

    Carrera S Cabriolet

Manual:  0-100 kph in    4.9 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 16.1 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.7 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 15.7 sec.

    Carrera

Manual:  0-100 kph in    4.9 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 16.6 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.7 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 16.3 sec.

    Carrera Cabriolet

Manual:  0-100 kph in    5.1 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 17.5 sec.

    PDK with Sport Chrono Plus:

                     0-100 kph in   4.9 sec.

                     0-200 kph in 17.2 sec.

    The biggest differences:

A Carrera GTS Coupe PDK is 0.7 sec. faster from 0-100 kph and 2.5 sec. faster from 0-200 kph than a Carrera Coupe with manual.

Same performance difference between Carrera GTS Cabriolet PDK and Carrera Cabriolet manual.

Meaning: There is a difference in performance compared to the Carrera base models but compared to the Carrera S, the difference is marginal.

While the GTS is still a bargain from many aspects, the very small performance difference actually doesn't make the Carrera Powerkit a good deal. One reason maybe why it doesn't seem to be available anymore for order on a new car, at least not in Germany.

Re: 997 Carrera GTS - some interesting performance figures you may not know

    Thanks for the information.

I wonder how many Carrera S were ordered with the X51. Very few I suppose, given the high cost and the comparative shape of the power curve (difference at very high revs).

On the GTS you get the Powerkit practically for free, so it is very welcome!

Re: 997 Carrera GTS - some interesting performance figures you may not know

The figures are  sensible when you consider  that the torque figures (310ft/lb) are the same between the powerkit and the standard S engine, so that even though the powerkit makes the same torque a little earlier in the powerband the off line acceleration is not likely to be that great. The cost curve for the powerkit is clearly more dramatic that the performance curve.

Re: 997 Carrera GTS - some interesting performance figures you may not know

Yes, the GTS is still a good deal but I'm not so sure about the powerkit itself, the Speedster and especially the Carrera Classic.

I know, I know...just some numbers but the differences are really hardly measurable.

Btw: I heard the rumor that Porsche actually planned to install the 435 HP GT3 engine into the Carrera GTS but apparently cost was too high and would have blown up the price tag.

So they went for the powerkit engine instead, which is also installed in the Speedster and Carrera Classic.

The powerkit engine has two major advantages which can't be measured by performance numbers:

    1. The sound is better (even with sport exhaust it sounds slightly different than the Carrera S engine with sport exhaust), sportier, 911-like

    2. The engine feels more "free", as if it breathes better (max. power is achieved at 7300 rpm, rev limiter jumps in at 7500)

    3. Torque curve is slightly better but not really dramatically better.

Not really worth 12000 EUR or so but at least it is for free in the GTS.

Interesting comparison. The figures for the PDK-cars are however wrong in comparison. You picked the Sport+ time for GTS but without Sport+ for the rest Smiley.

Christian, are these officcial figures or did you saw it in some mag tested?

Almost every magazines I saw the Carrera S PDK tested, it made less than 4,5sec to 100Kph, and best I´ve seen was 4,2sec to 100Kph and 14,3sec to 200Kph without the power kit. I`ve scan it and post those figures some time ago together with a great comparo video between Nissan GT-R, Carrera S PDK, Jaguar XKR and the Audi R8 V10.

My car which is a Cab S 2 PDK is fast, I´ve already had some funny encounters on the road and was amazed by this car accelaration even at high speeds. The best one was with a Ferrari F430 spyder, and believe it or not it didn´t lost  that much ground, if any. I know the Spyder is faster, but not by a huge margin. These cars really seem to have more than 385Hp...PDK miracle Smiley

You could be right, I got the figures from the Porsche press kit but it is true, the values for the Carrera S and Carrera mention PDK but not Sport Chrono. Which makes the whole powerkit deal look even worse. Smiley I'm actually quite surprised that 23 hp make such a minor difference but I guess it was to be expected.

As to the real life test values of the Carrera S with PDK and Sport Chrono, here are the results from Sport Auto:

    0-100 kph in 4.4 seconds

    0-200 kph in 14.9 seconds

    Carrera (base model with manual):

    0-100 kph in 5.1 seconds

    0-200 kph in 17.4 seconds

    Another comparison, 997.1 Carrera S (pre-facelift, manual):

    0-100 kph in 4.8 seconds

    0-200 kph in 16.0 seconds

This is how I expect 911 models against my E92 M3.

    997.1 Carrera S w/manual tranny is slightly slower BUT 997.2 Carrera S w/PDK + SC is slightly faster than my E92 M3 w/DKG from 0 to 200 km/h.

A couple of days ago, I had a brief run against my friend's 997.1 Carrera S w/tiptronic and I blew him away, as expected by me; but he was surprised. 997.1 Carrera S/4S w/tiptronic is slower than E46 M3 coupes. so his car had no chance.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Smiley

I have always said the same . My Carrera S PDK is very fast ! I get impressed by it all the time.  It is faster then 996 GT3 RS ( by a slight margin )

And I keep up with the 997.1 GT3 in acceleration .

I don't know if it is the PDK that makes miracles or if the car has pore then the supposed 385 HP, but , like you, I still get impressed 2 1/2 years and 45'000 km after I bought it !!!

The PDK is fantastic, I always wonder why people complaint. It is also very interesting that most PDK complaints seem to come from...US owners. Weird.

Btw: PDK and Sport Chrono are a must together.

I believe that 911s always have more than Porsche's officially stated power figures, so I expect a 997.2 Carrera S to produce more than 385 hp. Also, drivetrain loses are minimal.

My friend had dynoed my 997.1 Carrera S when I had the car (he was tuning cars and had his own dyno that is bought from Australia but I don't know what type dyno it was) and my car did 298 whp on his dyno. He was very surprised with the result and told me that he dyno-ed a Ferrari F430 @360 whp and F360@280 whp; several E46 M3s @240-260 whp.

So GTS w/PDK + SC is seriously quick and gives any sports car a good run for its money. I wish to have one over my M3 but being 50% more expensive than my car, I would choose R8 V8; but than again it is even slower than my M3. Smiley

Those 400Hp from Modena pale next to the 385Hp from Porsche, in real life situation it seems like the one with 400Hp is the German.

Re: 997 Carrera GTS - some interesting performance figures you may not know

    German magazine AutoZeitung clocked 4,3 s (100 km/h) and 15,3 s (200 km/h) with the stock 345-hp-Carrera PDK. Their time for the Carrera S PDK is 4,0 s (100 km/h) and 14,3 s (200 km/h).

Interesting numbers if you ask me.

Look at the RS5 figures, they are way too good too. Auto Zeitung is nice but their test values always seem to be slightly better than in other car magazines. I wonder why ?

Yes, AutoZeitung's performance data are usually way to good. Don't know why, because they tests the cars on a flat airfield with cooperation with the TÜV.

However, the RS5 data seems to be OK, because AutoBild Sportscars measured the same 4,3 s 0-100 km/h time and an even better 200 km/h-time of 15,4 seconds with a different testcar. And their times are pretty much the same as the others' (AMS, Sport Auto), because their testing methode is the same as well (2 persons on board, full tank of fuel, 2D-telemetry).
