Kubica seriously injured in Rally crash

Robert Kubica has been seriously injured in a Rally crash, while taking place at the Ronde di Andora Rally in Italy in a Skoda Fabia S2000. The Pole crashed into a church wall and had to be cut free from his car and air-lifted to the hospital. Kubica is said to have suffered a wrist fracture of his left hand as well as injuries to his left leg. Smiley

Robert Kubica has completed a seven hour operation under Italian hand surgery specialist Prof Igor Rossello, but it will be some time before his true condition becomes clear.

“We have to wait at least a week to see if his hand survives,” Rossello told Italian media, apparently adding that it could take a year for the Pole to be able to use his right arm again.

Rossello, a specialist from the nearly San Paulo Hospital in Savona, was joined by Renault’s own doctor, Riccardo Ceccarelli.

Kubica underwent bone reconstruction before the doctors attended to tissue damage.

Quite some news... I do hope that he gets well soon, he was one of the characterful individuals in Formula 1.

Oh no, poor guy, this is terrible. my thoughts are with him and hopefully he made a quick recovery. Sounds pretty serious and the timing given the start of the 2011 season is just around the corner.

Looks to me like his 2011 season is over. Hope he recovers soon so he can make a comeback in 2012.

I've read somewhere that he might never be fit to come back to racing, because he's already got metal bolts in the same arm from a previous accident.

His hand must have been close to amputation and will most certainly take several months to be cured. I do not expect him on the grid until the second half of the season at the earliest. After all he can be lucky if he successfully makes it back into F1at all.

That is terrible, he is one of my favorite drivers. I was sitting at the hairpin in Montreal when he had the big crash (and the next year when he WON!).

The roads in Andorra are very narrow and steep. I have a home in Pal where I visit in the winter to ski and some most places in andorra you feel like walking with a rope. Not like Kansas. Love Andorra though - NO TAXES!

Hope he fully recovers the use of his hand. If not, there may be hope. If Alex Zanardi can race without legs, maybe they can put something together to allow him to continue racing as well, though it may not be in F1.

So who will fill in for Kubica?

Hulkenberg, Heidfeld, Liuzzi, Senna, Di Grassi, De La Rosa, Chandok?

I think Liuzzi might get it - but I would personally prefer Heidfeld or Hulkenberg.

Renault have said that Heidfeld, Liuzzi and Senna are under consideration ...

A mistake on behalf of Renault not to engage Hulkenberg, the most authentic talent from the young generation.

Heidfeld is very experienced but he can shine in perfect conditions only. He is winless after so many years and always outraced by Kubica..

Liuzzi nothing special.

DLR accomplished tester but not the person to revive Renault.

Chandok, LdiG who?

My thoughts too Hulkenberg would be a smart move - they could compare him with Petrov and when/if Kubica returns, choose the faster one. I would guess that the Hulk would be quicker - Renault could neatly end up with Kubica and Hulkenberg as a result ... with the Hulk joining at a bargain price ...

Renault is to assess Senna and Heidfeld in Jerez as Kubica's replacement. I would pick Heidfeld anyday over Senna - he's far more experienced and will be his usual consistent self whereas even Chandok was faster than Senna in the same equipment last year at HRT.
