    Re: Cayenne Diesel

    ISUK:

It's simple economics at work here.

Buy a Cayenne turbo which will cost close to £100k with a nice spec. Rarely find an opportunity to use it's power and performance in everday driving, be prepared to be forever filling it up at a fuel station crying whilst watching the fuel pump counter whiz round until it shows lots of £ss, then take it back to the dealer 2 or 3 years later to trade it in and blow your brains out with the depreciation...... which is epic on the turbo.

Or buy a diesel which has lots of real world usable torque, gets good MPG, is cheaper to tax and insure, provides the same interior space and retains a far higher percentage of it's original value.

With the huge purchase price difference (£40k or thereabouts) buy a very nice, low miles used 997 C2S Gen 1 or a new Boxster S for a bit of weekend fun.

I agree on the Porsche V6 in the Panamera being a far better engine than the VW sourced one in the Cayenne. The V6 Panamera 4 really is the sweet spot currently in that model range IMHO. I expect that the diesel will be even better as it combines improved MPG which will give it a stronger value as a used car.

All very rational. Having eaten the depreciation on 2 Cayenne Turbos, and 1 Cayenne Turbo S, I thought about other variants this time round (but not for long Smiley). However, the performance loss is very noticeable, so my plan is to wait for someone else to  lose 1/3 of their purchase price and buy used this time. Hopefully , I will be able to find a white one, which is definitely the "new black" for this version of the Cayenne Turbo though it might be hard to find for a while.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Re the whole diesel car idea, what about the sound?

I always try to like diesel cars.. I really do. They make great rational sense

But that harsh unfriendly diesel sound.... turns me off within minutes. I think it would really put a dampener on the whole ownership experience.....

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Check out the Cayenne diesel page on the Porsche website. There is a sound clip of the car and the noise it makes may surprise you.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

    ISUK,

Congrats, indeed a no brainer. Let me know if your dealer has another "spare" one coming, I currently have a July build...

Great specs too you got, all teh essentials to ensure great resale value...

Yeah, it defnly has lost the clatter... hmmmm......

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

The car arrived yesterday courtesy of my Ferrari dealer who kindly picked it up on their way to my home as they were coming to collect my California...... top service   The driver said he certainly noticed the weight difference with this car in the back of his truck compared to his more normal car cargoes

I've not had a chance to drive very far in it yet but my initial impressions are -

    • it is extremely rapid (performance "feels" similar to my previous facelift Cayenne S).
    • the new 8 speed auto is a massive improvement over the previous tiptronic box.
    • it is extremely quiet in the cabin at high speed (I notice that a lot of effort has gone into the design of the doors seals and A pillars to achieve this compared to the old model).
    • the engine is very quiet on start up when you are standing outside the car. I had to check that they had sold me a diesel when I heard it start up the first time
    • the latest generation of PASM is excellent and the ride on 21" wheels is very good.
    • the cabin ergonomics and quality are a huge leap forward from the old car.
    • the panoramic roof is great, much better than the complex old version.

I'd forgotten just how much I enjoy driving Cayennes. It felt like I was coming home when taking the wheel for the first time in this car yesterday. Apologies for the poor camera phone pics. I'll take better ones when the weather improves.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

ISUK , you did a perfect choice - very , very nice car . Diesel engine is a tech. marvel , specially the modern versions . After all 90% +  of a time we drive on torque .

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Like I said before, great choice Iain  its a perfect daily driver, wait until you notice how much you save on fuel and how long it takes until you have to fill her up again.  imo the normal cayenne front (all but the turbo) with the turbo wheels looks way classier than the actual turbo. no offense to turbo owners.

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

    Nice car!!!

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

     ISUK,

Thanks for the write up. Glad you really like the car, great specs. From my test drive, I agree the diesel is  a great match for the car and it certainly works very well

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Love the car - thinking of buying one myself 2012. I actually wait for a "good depreciation" on a turbo...but a diesel would make more sense...

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Some better pics (and a gratuitous Boxster S shot as I've just spent hours cleaning it )

Indeed! I remember that ISUK was not happy with the original wheels of the Boxster S and had a special coating applied, but the Turbo wheels look better. Smiley

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

I admit to trying various wheels on this car over the last 20 months or so It arrived on Carrera 2's and I then ran it on Carrera Sports whilst I had the originals diamond cut. Unfortunately this finish didn't last due to stone chipping and water getting in under the laquer so I took them off last week and am having them refinished in the original factory silver and will put them back on when I sell the car. I agree that the turbo 2's look the best though

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Beautiful detailing job. Nice car! Also, the Cayenne is stunning! Porsche really improved it a lot, enjoy the Diesel torque and ride!

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Congrats, Porsche did a wonderful job with this model, the interior is simply amazing.

Indeed, diesel engine is surprisingly quite a idle, really really silent but as soon as you rev it, the hammers are there Smiley

Would be great to see a shot with your red beast in the middle of those two Germans Smiley

    Re: Cayenne Diesel

Test drove the Diesel, the V8 and the Turbo. I believe that the two Cayenne most "valid" options are the Diesel and the Turbo. The Diesel is fast enough in a limited speed territory (i.e. Spain), and the Turbo.... AMAZING!!!!
