"BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

    2011 and Beyond.

As you know BMW have announced that between now and 2015 they will bring 20 new models to the market covering a vast range of segments.
With the future growth of the small compact city , Premium Compact and Premium Entry segments in the minds of the product planners. BMW will unleash a greater majority of models based on this model matrix to increase it's volumes in the Premium segment.

Beginning in 2011 we will see the first results of this strategy within the new BMW 1er Sporthatch and BMW 3er Sedan which will be unveiled just before the end of 2011.
Another new exciting additions for the M-Division include the exciting new 1 series M Coupe and the sixth generation BMW M5.

The Premium market will welcome a new luxury set of BMW 6er Coupe and Convertible. Whilst the first evidence of the Gran coupe will be seen on the streets of Munich.
The new BMW X3 begins it's first year on the market with additional engines in europe along with a new four cylinder petrol turbo which will be announced later in the year. The BMW X1 continues it's success with over 100,000 units sold and top place in the market with an additional M-Sport packet.

The BMW X6 which recently celebrated it's three years launch in December 2007 will see a slight refresh life cycle improvement.

Although this is just the tip of the iceberg.
In 2011 you will get to hear more regarding BMW's innovative think-tank on sustainable future mobility as BMW begin preparing the world for it's innovative new Sub brand. New innovations Aswell as exciting new Concepts scheduled for Detroit , Geneva , Shanghai and Frankfurt. all to show BMW's leadership of the premium segment.

In Part one we focus on the MINI Brand , and the new BMW sub brand "BMW "i"

IN Part Two it will concentrate on the BMW Premium Compact and Premium Entry segment . BMW's FWD compact series, The BMW 1er and BMW 3er, BMW X1 and BMW X3 and X4.

In Part Three we will touch on the Core BMW Premium luxury models - BMW 5er , 6er and 7er. BMW X5 and X6.

In Part Four we will look at the other BMW sub brands - BMW "M" and BMW "Z" and finally Rolls-Royce Motor cars.

    Part one

    Not just a fashion brand.
    From MINI to Paceman..

    The Genius of MINI.

They said it would never last , they said it would be popular for a year and then spiral downwards , They said it would never work in the US.
As we head to the NAIAS in Detroit this coming week for MINI. although for other reasons it is also the highly successful tenth anniversary of launching the MINI brand in the US back in 2001. To which the early voices have been proven wrong.

What is the secret to MINI's success? Marketing is in principle the key but for successful marketing to work you have to have an outstanding product to which the MINI redefined the purpose of a small car and proved that it can go Premium.
From 2001 we have seen many ideas that were considered from the original strategy come to reality in later years. Since it's first introduction in 2001 MINI has come along way and now offers the customer innovative and individual concepts in the shape of the Clubman and Countryman on top of the regular hatch that only initially spawned a MINI Convertible.

Over the past year MINI has shown how it will expand it's brand beginning very soon with the Production model of one the "untamed" twins the highly anticipated MINI Coupe. - Testing has been ongoing behind closed doors since last year and will eventually be seen in public soon , first pre-production models are now being built on the Oxford Production line. The MINI Coupe will be joined towards the end of the year by the introduction of the MINI Roadster , another highly expected model.

MINI's expansion into new premium territory begins this week with the unveiling of the MINI Paceman Concept Car. The Paceman is MINI's interpretation of BMW's successful niche "Sport Activity Coupe". Codenamed Canyon this Concept has been in development for a number of years and began as a simple concept designed for brand expansion a few years back.
MINI sees the Paceman as a more dynamic alternative to the Countryman in which if the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can co-exist, why can't Paceman and Countryman?

Designed as both a 3dr and 5dr concept using "Club doors" but renamed "Activity doors" but still maintaining a B-Pillar for structural rigidity.
The Paceman (although it will be named something entirely different for production)
is lower than the Countryman and to reach it's premium tendency the Paceman in production format will feature ALL 4 All-wheel-drive only although to distance both the Countryman and Paceman Concepts in the same way the X5 and X6 distinguish themselves in the driving will be a MINI developed Dynamic Performance Control which will give the Paceman more direct dynamic handling.

Although the MINI brand can count on a premium market expansion. At Geneva MINI will showcase a strategy to see how the brand can be stretched but towards a new market for the brand. The MINI City Car Concept will be shown to gauge reaction amongst the public, strictly a two seater but inheriting iconic MINI design elements , the car is put forward as an alternative to lower market cars such as the Smart car which is in the line of fire for this concept.
Although the concept will be based on an existing R56 Chassis, it is purely to
showcase whether such a small MINI would be credible and an exciting alternative to smaller city car concepts.
If the car is well received then production would be a definte with a production model arriving by 2013. However many hope that this car could actually start a sub-brand under the existing MINI which the current R56 will be replaced in 2013.
One such idea is a MINI based on the Megacity Vehicle design concept in which a smaller concept for four in the shape of an alternative multi-purpose vehicle.

With the Countryman finding it's market and the Paceman offering a more premium Sports concept. The next generation MINI hatch will again offer a Cabrio model but with the Clubman proving successful the next move is to offer a MINI which would offer more flexibility. Previously under development as the SpaceBox but expected as a MINI Clubman X - For extended. The next generation Clubman will offer the same idea but the Extended wheelbase model will offer a higher roof and twin club doors, For right-hand-drive markets MINI will bring the Clubdoor to the passenger side although the poor argument that their kids can run out on to the road is irrelevant because the driver has to open their door first, no matter what Journalists state.
Building two Clubmans on the one platform strategy would work out to be cost-effective as the structure can be shared with a relevant BMW model.

Whilst the MINI Coupe and Roadster are very MINI-centric.
If the car's take off and become successful? Initial discussion to future variants, talk of replacements not necessary sharing the same bodyshells as a regular MINI but by being more stand out in appearance - A proper small Sports coupe and Roadster but using MINI design elements on a seperate body that seperates the cars from the regular hatch and convertible.
The litmus test is the reaction on the market to the incoming Coupe and Roadster.

    i-NFINITY AND BEYOND.

Why BMW Group's Project-i Thinktank for future sustainable mobility will maintain the Group's position as the worlds no 1 manufacturer of Premium Automobiles.

If MINI is Pop Culture , Rolls-Royce is classic and timeless and BMW is modern architecture. BMW "i" is Sci-fi future.

When BMW announced the Project-i Thinktank many factions were intrigued.
BMW has since made a name for itself in regards to meeting strict C 02 targets and reducing fuel consumption in their products since early 2007.
The BMW Group are the worlds no 1 Premium Automobile manufacturer as well as the leader in emission reductions .

BMW announced that Project-i will spawn a range of concepts that will range from two wheels to four and will be anything but conventional.
Of course when the Vision Efficient Dynamics debuted at the IAA in 2009 , jaws dropped and finally people could see who innovative and serious BMW are in relation to Sustainable future mobility.
But some thought the concept was too adventurous for production until BMW pulled the carpet from under them and announced you will be able to buy this car.

Although the Vision Efficient Dynamics is in design format anything but conventional it lays the groundwork to what you can expect from Project-i .
BMW are about to bring the future today as what you see in terms of design the Vision Efficient Dynamics is the signature language of Project-i .
Ground breaking drivetrains clothed in high-tech design and functional areodynamics. That is the genesis of the BMW i sub-brand.

Although first on the road will be the highly anticipated and soon-to-be-seen MegaCity Vehicle.
a stunning mobility concept for four - purely electric with a cutting edge interior and bodyshell made entirely out of carbon fibre. Space inside the interior is not compromised by the drivetrain and the interior is very spacious with wrap around glass for excellent visibility. Entry is accessible to the rear cabin via MINI/RR esque rear hinged doors.
The exterior is very much akin to the innovative Vision Efficient Dynamics in terms of design ideas , aerodynamics and appearance.

The Vision Efficient Dynamics production car will be very much what you see and you will be surprised at how the car will arrive for production with minimal changes.
Using the term i8, the production car of the concept is not a competitor for premium sports cars such as the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 etc it is more of a Sports car concept for the future. A completely stand alone concept.

Although there have been cries of "needing a V8 , V10 etc" to do so defeats the ideals of the concept and turns it into another premium sports car.
Although the Audi R8 etc have their attributes in the end of the day it is an interpretaion of a sports car concept by the respective manufacturer.
BMW wants to use their interpretation as something entirely alien , something that has never been done before something that really stands out and not as a competitor but a pioneer.

Another question to why does the Sports Car have four seats should it just be two? The answer to why four seats is in principle because people would simply pay you to get driven in the car and BMW drivers like sharing their experience with others so they would not want friends and family to miss out .
Of course the Production car will feature four seats but further down the Project-i strategy there are plans for an i4 a two seater small sports car in the same idea as the i8 which could be based on the Megacity Vehicle and be purely electric or and as to why Mercedes-Benz have instigated a partnership with Ducatti the Superbike manufacturer.
    Motorcycle engines.

BMW have and continue to test it's engines from Motorrad in car chassis's , Motor cycle engines are compact , very light and when connected to powerful electric motors extremely rapid including the new inline six. Should the MegaCity vehicle be well received then BMW might consider equipping the car with a motorcycle engine as a range extender. Although Project-i is also developing two cylinder engines.

In summary. BMWi is not going to be specially adapted additional series concepts but an entire series of models that will aim to offer their own identity and technology.
So far you have only seen the Vision Efficient Dynamics and a sneak preview of the MegaCity Vehicle but it is your first look into a new era for BMW.

The new "Clothes" on the Vision Efficient Dynamics" are to bring it in line with a forthcoming BMW Project-i Concept car

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

Wow very bold move that BMW is going for an innovative and separate "i" brand. Coming this early, it will have other play catch up for the rest of the decade if they can pull it off. Essentially it will need to drive and handle well and the interior ergonomics is very important to BMW customers as well. I can see it going well, but i wonder how much innovation we will see. They say the i8 will be very close to the VED concept, but really? I can visualize the front, but those side lines and that glass door? Also the rear end is very raw and does not really scream BMW yet.... Certainly very exciting to see BMW go bold.

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

    Part Two.

    B.rave N.ew W.orld.

    It's What?

When Norbert Reithofer. BMW's chairman of the Board announced that 80% of BMW owners thought that their BMW 1er was front wheel drive , many were astounded at that statement when it was mentioned regarding BMW's shock-announcement of it's intentions into Front wheel drive. As many , the world over believe that the concept of Front Wheel drive in a BMW is not only sacreligious and blasphemy but something that BMW had fought to distinguish their cars from their competitors.

Till the latest winter photographs and videos of people across the world trying to get mobile by either equipping their front wheels with snowchains or trying to clear a path for the front wheels, getting nowhere sometime to hilarious and expected consequences. Norbert Reithofer was therefore justified in his statement.

    Looking at BMW Differently...

BMW are not just going Front Wheel Drive to further eclipse their emissions targets. But to provide a profitable strategy by developing a new platform structure , modular in form to accomodate both MINI and BMW.
First of all contrary to media reports and enthusiasts of the BMW brand , Front Wheel Drive is part of a strategy to help the next generation MINI and it's future variants to become more profitable and more cost effective for BMW to produce.

Initial strategies in the beginning had lead to talks with PSA , Fiat and of course Daimler where the beginnings of a proposed MINI and Smart sharing programme disintegrated when BMW decided to go it alone.

    No Reasons to Panic

When I say Front wheel Drive BMW the panic sets in and goes against BMW's core marketing message: Image , Dynamics and Rear Wheel Drive.
Some journalists have pointed out that the new 1er is Front Wheel Drive and so is the 3er and so will this eventually and so on.
The new BMW 1er which will be seen in a few months time remains Rear Wheel Drive, The new BMW 3er which will debut in November also remains Rear Wheel Drive.

What the Front Wheel Drive BMW consist of however is a range of small concepts designed to appeal to a growing demographic in the demand for more compact premium concepts.

A New World of Difference: The Concepts.

    BMW Compact
    BMW Compactive Sport Gran Tourer
    BMW F.amily A.ctivity S.ports T.ourer

First of all will see the new BMW Compact. BMW's interpretation of a Front Wheel Drive city car or a MINI. You will have typical BMW design elements but reinterpreted to give a new impression of a totally different idea of a BMW. In order for the concept to appeal it has to be eye-catching and stand out amongst it's competitors.

    A Sexy Kind of Blasphemy.

The overall shape of the car differs completely from the typical MINI or conventional 3dr hatch format , the closest intention on the market today is possibly the Honda CR-Z but not directly.
In order to really sell home the concept. BMW wants the car to really strike out not just from the MINI but also it's competition.

The designers have gone for an edgier three-dimensional appearance in it's explanation it forgoes the use of lines to enhance wheelarches and now becomes more Three-Dimension as it is now stamped so you can see the widening of the rear quarter.

One idea intended to signify the new direction for BMW is expanded design cues talked about previously such as an enclosed normal glasshouse that is pushed inwards allowing the metal around the rear to enclose the glasshouse allowing a line that curves around the rear window forming the typical BMW kink impression in metal instead of the glass that swipes strikingly through the doors to the front wing.
The A-Pillars follow the direction shown with the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept and continue down into the front wing leaving a typical BMW wheel at each corner look , triangular shaped lights sit upon each corner of the rear. The roof is towards the rear a typical BMW sloping roof.

With the typical BMW double round headlights stepped with one slightly below the other another idea is the inclusion of indicator signals directly underneath the angel eyes.
The front of the car gets a smaller twin kidney grille again more three-dimensional as the front of the car allows the grille to be pushed further back.

The stand-out stylish design has been chosen to really signify the new direction , a regular typical hatch would not be a major selling point to deliver the concept.

The BMW Compactive Gran Sport Tourer - Fullfills the need for a segment BMW have not yet targeted mainly the multi-purpose vehicle segment which is expected to see sales rises from 45% per year. BMW plan a two prong attack but will not offer a typical MPV concept in which some look like Vans with additional windows.
what BMW intend to offer is a raised Five Dr hatch-Tourer concept with a raised driving position , stretched wheelbase with room for five made possible by positioning the engine transversely and removing the transmission tunnel.
It will not be a Five Dr variant of the compact. It will inherit a very unique design.
    [/FONT

The BMW F.amily A.ctivity S.port T.ourer is seen as a more Sporty orientated synergy of a Touring MPV and an X model. Again it will be uniquely designed , look sporty.
Like the Mega City Vehicle , the car will feature rear-hinged doors for access to the cabin The concept has proved successful in presentations that BMW have commenced work on a 3er F.A.S.T. But will be Rear Wheel Drive.

Can the BMW Compact and MINI co-exist ?

The key to this is a brand new compact platform shared with the MINI that if the first outcome is successful then BMW might consider a further range of models to support it's new segment.
This new Platform which has been engineered to support the MINI and BMW 1001 Compact will be used within each Brands variants. MINI of course will be the first to expand and after an establishment period has indicated that BMW's concept was a success then BMW's design teams have on the table a range of additional concepts for the expansion. Another key to the cost effectiveness of the car is that engines will also be shared as well manual, automatic and electric drivetrains. Engines will also be shared ranging from three and Four cylinders in both petrol and diesel format.

In distinguishing both cars visually another key factor for BMW is the driving characteristics and how the engineers will go to lengths to make sure that both MINI and the BMW Compact offer an individual driving experience that distinguishes both cars.
The MINI of course will retain it's typical MINI Go-Kart trademark handling whilst BMW will be looking for a more dynamic approach , both levels of dynamics for both cars are attainable.

Why the need for a Premium Front wheel drive Concept from BMW?

The recent recession taught us that customers are willing to downsize to other segments if there vehicles offer the same luxuries and features as traditional luxury concepts. The prime example being MINI where in some markets for MINI sales were actually rising it was only to further examination that a higher majority of these cars were being built with nearly every option available maximising profits for MINI and showing that customers were willing to move to more efficient vehicles but with the same level of comforts and luxuries.

The online enthusiast board reaction has been to overwhelm the negatives of the BMW philosophy but some overlook one very important ideal - BMW already do Front Wheel Drive and do it well , a car that has seen off new impressive competition such as the Fiat 500 and Audi A1 when it comes to make a Front Wheel drive car that handles , has a great image and offers the customer a perfect choice of flexibility. It is called the MINI. __________________

Thanks for the post. How about the other chapters? I'm interested in the direction of the

In Part Three we will touch on the Core BMW Premium luxury models - BMW 5er , 6er and 7er. BMW X5 and X6.

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

I'll post it once it's out

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

What I don't quite like about the BMW exterior design is the fact, that it doesn't seem to be consistent and up to some point, it is even boring. The interior design is much worse, it may be functional and very user friendly but it is boring like hell and could be one of the reasons I wouldn't go for a BMW anymore (and I'm really no design buff).

I also think that BMW needs to find a more distinctive design for their SUVs because right now, some people have problems to make a difference between the X3 and the X5.

The X6 is a nice variation but this isn't enough.

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

BMW has always stayed very close to their design era in terms of 3er, er and 7er, since the 80s i would say. You are right about certain aspects because when the interior's look too similar i get the feeling that the 3er customer is getting a steal and that the 7er is paying too much for the same thing.

The new "i" sub branch will definitely solve this distinctive design problem.. unless BMW adapts their entire range to that new design language..

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

Check the new 5 - from the side line you could guess its a 3 and from rear and front it looks like a 7. But compare it to Audi or Mercedes, same there!

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

I still find the Audi interior to be more emotional and up-to-date if you ask me. Take the new Porsche interior design as an example, a very nice one, even if it looks a little bit overloaded.

BMW seems to use the same interior design for the past 10 years now, it is time to change it slightly.

In Part Four we will look at the other BMW sub brands - BMW "M" and BMW "Z" and finally Rolls-Royce Motor cars.

2:2 I have Seen the future.... It is compact... and it works....

Given BMW's primary focus over the last few years has been it's strategy to increase it's growth within three particular segments.
We have already covered the segments involving the Front wheel Drive platform with the MINI brand.

Now we move onto the modular architecture that will bring forth the next generation BMW 1er and 3er models. Although the modular structure of the architecture allows for Front wheel Drive.
The core of the BMW 1er and 3er models will remain driven from the Rear wheels unless the car is all-wheel driven.
Front wheel Drive variants of the 1er allows BMW to compete in segments where utility and space is a priority to customers with both the 1er GT and BMW 1er FAST offering customers exciting reinterpretations of existing concepts but in a more BMW -friendly way.

The first of the new Rear Wheel drive models begins with the next generation BMW 1er Sporthatch which is only a couple of monts away from making it's debut before it's public premiere and market introduction at and just after the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt this September.

Given the priority of growth in these segments BMW see the 1er and 3er as segments that will offer the customer big-car luxuries , technology and premium ambience in a smaller package.
At the height of the economic crisis it was found that customers were downsizing from segments but were equipping their cars with the same levels of luxury and optional equipment.
By introducing more features found within luxury premium concepts.
BMW can mass produce them for the volume market at a cost that is reasonable to the customer and maximise profits.

The premium Compact and Premium Entry segments which cover the BMW 1er and 3er are the single most important sector for manufacturers this decade.

Whilst several models are in the pipeline for both the 1er and 3er and created to take advantage of growing segments including segments BMW are not recognised within. Some are still in the conception stage.
such as the following three concepts here.

Here is a breakdown of these concepts and why they are being looked at it. It is possible one or two (or maybe all ) will not see the light of day but the breakdown shows how BMW are considering such concepts in light of how they can increase the market both in Germany and across the world,
and how BMW can enter the market by offering a more appealing and highly individual approach.

BMW 3er AFAST : Advanced Family Sports Activity Tourer

    - Synergy of MPV , SAV and Touring
    - Rear Wheel Drive
    - Flexible Interior , Space within a car-like body
    - Based on architecture for China built F30 3er Li.
    - Re-birth of RFK proposal
    - Segment to grow by 65% by 2015.

The media will describe it as a BMW Mini-van. But the AFAST takes it's approach from the BMW FAST which for the 3er is known as AFAST Advanced Family Activity Sports Tourer.
The idea is to mix the space and flexibility of an MPV , The solidity and of an SAV with the shape of a larger Touring model but have it remain more car-like in it's appearance.
When BMW talk about FAST And AFAST the question is why do customers have to conform to a single concept which is a typical eurobox or a van with windows if they require space and flexibility? BMW's ideas are to reinterpret the concept to be more car like but without compromise of space, flexibility and how the car drives.

Both flexible options for the 1er and 3er are demanded by customers who want a more Premium offering and for customers who need a car that fullfills their requirements but would like a BMW.

The 3er unlike the FAST 1er will be Rear wheel drive and for cost effectiveness will be based on the LWB platform of the Chinese only market BMW 3er Li which will be introduced for the first time with the F30.

AFAST is if you can put it the reincarnation of BMW's RFK project that morphed into the BMW 5er Gran Turismo. @ BMW some concepts might not be suitable for some segments but can work in others where there is demand for a BMW Concept of this type.

To describe the order in size for BMW space Concepts in height - First would be Shooting Brake(6er) , Touring (3er,5er) , Gran Turismo (1er,3er,5er) and then FAST/AFAST (1er,3er).

BMW 1er Gran Coupe Sports Sedan

    - Demand for a four door in the important US Market
    - Could be built in Spartanburg
    - A more sporting approach without intercepting important euro fleet market for lower engined BMW 3er models.

    - Rear wheel Drive
    - Unique styling Concept from the sporthatch.
    - Returns to the formula of the classic BMW Sports sedan.

The European fleet market for BMW is a tightly contested market that is dominated by the lower BMW 320d and BMW 520d models.
This is one reason why BMW have not sought to introduce a 1er based sedan in light of the 1er being proved to be too small with fleets resorting to the C-Klasse and A4 Audi.
With demand for a 1er that can fit within the important US Market , The world of a premium sporthatch does not fit as the premium BMW will charge for the Sporthatch in the US will not make the 1er competitive with the relevant VW Golf.
One solution is to introduce a four door 1er but under the disguise of a four door Coupe in the mold of the BMW 6er Gran Coupe - Giving it a sleeker appearance and a more niche market. Based on the 1er the car will retain Rear Wheel drive and offer the more performance-led diesel and petrol four cylinder turbo charged family.
Designed to emulate the classic RWD BMW Sports sedan , small compact but instantly recognisable.
One option could be to manufacture the car in the US.

    BMW 1er Shooting Brake

    - Reinterpeting the design of the 1600/2002 Touring shape
    - Performance led Style concept
    - Rear Wheel Drive
    - 2dr (3dr with hatch)

Another option for the 1er is to further emulate the classic historic 1600/2002 models and introduce a compact based Shooting Brake Touring styled in the form of the classic BMW 1600/2002 Touring with it's almost streamlined wedge-like shape.

The Payoff of an Uncharted Territory.

Although the BMW X3 was the first out of the gate using the latest architecture that will be found under the 1er and 3er.
The Premium Compact expansion begins with the next generation BMW 1er Sporthatch which you will see in a couple of months time.
Using and evolutionary styling approach , the new 1er follows the X3 and "Reverse Engineers" the original concept enhancing what worked and re-evaluating what didnt work. Rear space which was a contributory factor to the E87 is now improved as is cabin materials.
The new 1er retains that individual C-Segment typical hatch shape which defined BMW as a major competitor in the compact segment with the 1er being the drivers choice. Launched almost simultaneously with the 5dr Sporthatch is the 3dr Sporthatch , the option for the 1er driver who had no need for 5drs, this time the 3dr Sporthatch will live up to it's appearance with a more sport orientated model overlooked in face of the Coupe reincarnating BMW's classic Tii label with turbocharged four cylinder power to produce for the first time a competitor for the VW Golf GTi ,
although those who need the extra doors will also get to play with a relative 5dr.

In Early 2012 , The first details of the BMW M-Sport Packet for the 1er will be announced again offering enhancement and not distraction.

With the 1er and 3er being the two signifcant volume models introduced by BMW in 2011, the 1er will open the mid-year whilst the 3er will end the year.

Return of the KING : The BMW 3er Sedan and BMW 3er Touring

Signifying it's lead as the car for the premium entry sedan market with numerous awards under it's belt within each generation.
The next 3er again builds on what makes this car just perfect.
BMW knows what makes a 3er so appealing and they succeed in every generation. F30 is no different .
The styling might be formulatic but it is what the 3er customer wants , although the F30 continues the evolutionary approach since the E36 , the appearance becomes sharper , fresher and the lines bring the 3er into the next generation of BMW surface design.
Debuting juat before the end of the year , the new 3er will make it's world debut at the 2012 Geneva Auto Salon. An additional Active Hybrid 3 will also be shown at the same event. Following the same timeline as the BMW 5er , the 3er Touring (F31) will debut immediately after with the Premiere penciled to follow it's bigger 5er brother and debut at the AMI in Leipzig in 2012 coinciding with a premiere in BMW's largest 3er and 5er Touring's market- Germany.

Travelling in Style...FAST ! The BMW 3er Gran Turismo.

At the Beijing Autoshow in April , BMW will follow it's 5er Li with a 3er Li built exclusively for the Chinese market in China.
To bring the extended 3er a more cost effective approach.
BMW will not follow the lead by the 5er Gran Turismo and base it on a model above but use the Chinese extended platform for it's Gran Turismo variant of the 3er.

The 3er Gran Turismo will offer more or less the same attributes as the 5er Gran Turismo but in a much more sleeker package. The same rules apply in terms of the passenger is more important. But the 3er GT will inherit a touch of dynamic flavor with BMW seeing the GT 3 as driving in style and luxury but also fast. The success of the 5er GT in which has contributed greatly to BMW's bottom line since it's introduction has spurned on the development of the much maligned concept.
The 3er GT will offer a simple hatch function forgoing the twin trunk arrangement on the 5er GT. BMW intend to offer both turbocharged Petrol and Diesel Four and Six Cylinders and a Hybrid variant with the 3er GT aswell as xDrive. The customer can specify a 3er GT 20d xDrive aswell as a 3er GT 35i xDrive.
The apperance of the 3er GT will follow the 5er GT and be totally independent from the 3er as the 5er GT declares it's independence from the 5er but inherits a bloodline shared between the two.

2013 : The Year of the BMW Coupe and Convertible.

With the 3er Coupe and Cabrio even within it's current E92 and E93 models has surprised BMW that the individual appearance has worked wonders for the car and it's customer base. Since the car is so far removed from the Sedan and Touring in every way that the F32 and F33 the replacments for the E92 and E93 will follow the same formula.
Due out in 2013 at the beginning and the end of the year respectively

The Coupe begins the transition to shaper lines which we are seeing within the BMW Connected Drive Concept Car but because of the importance of the 3er Coupe which in Europe for example the customer buys the 320d Coupe the best selling 3er Coupe but equip it to a level of luxury coupes that cost up to twice or three times as much.
Realising that customers who do so are not a minority the 3er Coupe will get a more individual look that defines the Coupe as Premium.
Styling is evolutionary but will be retain sharper looks and angles , the rear end reinterprets the current car but adds the typical L-Shape but in a fresh direction. The headlights are more angular and sharper but retain that flick at the inner edges for a more premium feel ,the indicators are recessed underneath the light covers giving a relationship to the new BMW 6er Coupe.

The Cabrio will retain the folding hardtop as BMW cannot ignore the popularity of this model in key markets - one being China.
The E93 3er Cabrio is very popular amongst the chinese especially with the female demographic. The same goes for the world over. The car is much loved for it's style and ambience plus the added security of the hardtop. With many enjoying the showing off of the hardtop via the key.
The Hardtop is carried over to the new car which will allow the designers to reinstate that level of design function of how the car's side remains consistent when you only have to look at the Lexus IS cabrio to see this done very, very wrong.

Given the establishment period of the 1er from 2004 - 2007 which allowed BMW to push ahead and emulate the leading profit segment of the 3er with additional concepts. In which 2007 introduced the 1er Sporthatch and of course the 1er Coupe and Cabrio which also allowed BMW to introduce the 1er to the North American market in a more appealing form.

The 1er Coupe and Cabrio has shown that Premium compacts do work and especially in the North American market. To which if you look at what BMW's competitors are currently involving themselves in is more Premium Compact concepts, especially after seeing how BMW have established a market for these models which after the 3er is BMW's most profitable line-up. Given the time from Sporthatch to Coupe did not give BMW much time to become more adventurous with the appearance mainly due to the first step into a new segment with the E87 1er in which all BMWs entering a new segment have an establishment period of 2-3 years to determine if the intergration has been successful.

The next Coupe and Cabrio allows BMW to instigate a more classic yet modern approach of it's present day incarnation of the typical 2dr BMW RWD Concept starting from the 2002,E21 and E30 3er but returning in the E82 1er Coupe. The Coupe and Cabrio become more adventurous from the F20 hatch it allows them to form their own identity but keep the propotions and that classic look which has made the E82 an enthusiasts car and a much loved one at that. With the model line up refelecting today's choices and
Engine choices for the new Coupe and Cabrio will emulate the Sporthatch and offer more performance and efficiency with less cylinders .
The next Cabrio will carry over that straight forward clean appearance of the current car with the new design but will retain it's quick and lightweight soft top roof as 1er customers are deemed to be very happy with the simple function of the folding soft-top.

The current discussion especially for the 1er Coupe and Cabrio models is to reclassify them as a BMW 2er in light of the FWD 1er models to avoid confusion.
Although the FWD models will inherit f Drive to classify them with the Sporthatches inheriting sDrive.

BMW see the growth of the Premium Compact and Premium Entry Segments paramount to their target of 2 million units by 2020 in which unit sales will be determined by the MINI Brand /BMW FWD vehicles and the Premium Compact and Premium Entry vehicles.

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

Aren't they taking it just a bit far with all these sub-segments? how many untapped niche markets could there be?  otoh, it does seem like a well rounded plan, im very much looking forward to the new 3.

Re: "BMW Insider" Talks About BMW Group's Future

Mercedes is coming with a CLC, a 4 door sports coupe based on the new A-class technology. It'll be just as long as a C-class except slightly more curved haha. Then there's the name of it, why CLC? It's just messy but i guess they are tapping into the SLS halo name.

Get this, the CLC will probably come in a shooting back.. So wait, yes a 4 door coupe will become a T-model.

All these sub-segments are really coming silly.

    - 4 door coupes (sedan)
    - 2 door wagons
    - 2 door shooting backs
    - 2 door SUVs (coupe shape)
    - 4 door cabrios (Why not a Panamera Convertible)

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)
