...it was built for the late Bill Harrah, a casino owner from Nevada. At his death he had one of the worlds largest and best classic  car collections, over 1500 cars. He also owned many Ferrari's and was know for commisioning strange custom creations. In 1969, in order to drive on rough roads to his ranch, he took the rear of a Jeep Waggoneer and the front, including engine, from a Ferrari 365 to create this car.

So he ruined a Jeep and a Ferrari to make that thing?  Smiley

I tried to visit his museum in Reno many years ago when driving through there, but couldn't get in because it was too close to closing time. Maybe it was a good thing. Smiley

Looks like a huge Z3 Coupé to me.

Ah, that's not a Z3 Coupe... THIS is a Z3 Coupe (with Australian Croc. Dundee drawl...Smiley ) , or M Coupe as they were sold here.   Our previous car, now departed to make room for the 911.   As for Heist's comment about a "minor success", this car only sold about 600 in North America over 4 years... very minor indeed, so minor that BMW waited several years before deciding whether to do a coupe version of the Z4.   But to get back OT, I hope Ferrari does make this 612 variant... this style will never appeal to many but it does draw huge attention and has its own appeal.

I know what the Z3 Coupé looks like, I got one. Smiley

And it survived each and every F-car and hopefully will be with me still for a very long time, absolutely love it. Smiley

But back to the 612 successor. You may be right that such a variant could draw attention, but what works at a small Z Coupé doesn't necessarily work at a huge car like the 612. Smiley

Not exactly true. He took a Jeep body and running gear and dropped in the 365 motor and gearbox (I only know this because I used to live near Reno, NV where his collection is now housed in a museum). He amusingly referred to it as "the Jerrari"

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but to my eyes the Z3 Coupe was a design disaster. Hopefully the new Ferrari won't be a hideous shooting break. What amazes me though is that people take every photoshop they see as the real thing...Smiley

You're right, only the front clip was used....I guess the engine went to the Jerrari. The front  clip and engine probably came from a wrecked 365??

    Yes  - official today

Re: Ferrari estate breaks with tradition

Ferrari 612 successor will be privately shown on January 21, teased on invitation

    Ferrari 612 Teaser
Ferrari 612 teaser – Click above to expand

Before Ferrari officially debuts its 612 Scaglietti replacement to the public, the automaker is holding a private event where a select few people will get to see the new car in its final, production-spec glory. An anonymous Autoblog reader sent us the invitation you see above, which loosely translated from Italian to English reads, "Get ready to jump on board... Ferrari invites you to discover an all-new Ferrari in preview." The invite also includes a nice teaser shot of the car's front quarter panel. The private unveiling appears to be an online-only viewing affair and will be held on Friday, January 21 at 12:00 CET, or 6:00 AM Eastern time here in the United States.

We've seen plenty of spy shots of the Ferrari 612 successor, and even though the final design has been nicely camouflaged with boxy cladding, it's no secret that the new car will be all sorts of sexy. The front end looks to be inspired by the 458 Italia, and the very classic shooting brake proportions are fitting for a grand tourer such as the 612. Oh, and did we mention that the car is rumored to have around 670 horsepower from a 6.3-liter V12? Our interest is indeed piqued.

Re: Ferrari estate breaks with tradition

I'm really quite impressed. Different but certainly nice. I suspect that it will cost a small fortune given that 4 seat v12 ferrari's have always been more expensive than the V12 sports car. Not sure what they charge for a 599 at the moment but this is bound to cost north of £250k. Especially given all the new tech.

I think I'll try to cancel my trip to view it at Maranello next week. I don't like it at all. It resembles an upscaled Z3 coupe to my eyes and IMHO that's not a compliment.

Admittedly the photo's are poor and don't show any real three dimensional views of the car but I'm struggling to see anything attractive about it. The concept of a two door, four wheel drive, four seat luxury coupe was dreamt up 45 years ago by British manufacturer Jensen with their Interceptor FF model. It seems Ferrari have even adopted the same name for this new model.

The Panamera coupe renderings looked far more attractive than this car IMHO .
