    Maserati SUV?

Maserati Plans SUV Made In Detroit With Ferrari Engine

How is this for a mixed pedigree? Chrysler, which is managed by Fiat executives these days, plans to build a Maserati SUV in Detroit at an assembly plant that kicks out Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos, which are built on an engineering platform developed with Mercedes-Benz for its M Class SUV stemming from when Chrysler was owned by Daimler.

Now comes word that the forthcoming Maserati SUV will be fitted with a Ferrari engine. Fiat also owns Ferrari, which has supplied engines to Fiat's Lancia, Alfa-Romeo, Maserati cars, as well as Formula One teams.

"It will be a rock and roll engine," said Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. It may come in both a V-8 and a V-12 version, said the CEO in a roundtable interview at the North American International Auto Show that included Luxist.com

The SUV should be ready for Maserati showrooms worldwide in 2012.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

There was a strong rumor of a Ferrari SUV some while ago but apparently Ferrari owners have a more serious problem with SUVs than Porsche owners.  So Ferrari decided to actually pass this project to a more "fitting" brand in the Fiat group, Maserati.

According to our rumors, the Maserati SUV will use a V8 engine with up to 500 HP and a more exclusive Maserati SUV "powered by Ferrari" might use the V12 engine with up to 600 HP.

The Maserati SUV is rumored to be completely based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

99% unrelated but the new Grand Cherokee is not a bad looking thing IMHO. Sure its no Cayenne or X5, but its not bad at all.

It looks waaay better than the previous one.

I never thought that Fiat was really serious about reinventing the Chrysler brand. It seems like they are doing a fine job so far. I hope they keep up the good work and just lost interest half way thru like Mercedes did.

And the Grand Cherokee is completely based on the Mercedes ML.

Enmanuel, that's why it's so much better Smiley They really should have called it something else, because the Grand Cherokee still has the US garbage associations with it....

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: Maserati SUV?

the maserati suv would surely be a looker. but is the platform really good enough to handle a 600 hp performance suv ??

    Re: Maserati SUV?

The Cayenne is based on the Touareg platform and it can handle 600hp.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

Jeep are due to launch a new version of the SRT8 this summer with well over 500hp so that should give an insight into what's possible.

well probably it is me to have problems with suv's...but don't use ferrari or maserati to make those delivery vans!!!! the suv trend is soon over....do other things instead!!!!

Porsche 993 C2...as far as I know, my X5 M is faster from 0-100 kph and 0-200 kph.

On a good day, if the track isn't too sophisticated, I could even beat a 993 C2 in my delivery van.

So sorry but I don't get your point. Or can you transport a wife, two kids, four pair of skis and a couple of Samsonites in your 993 C2 ?! Smiley

    Yes, that's true!!

But who helped Porsche developing the Cayenne platform??

    exactly...and i'd trust a touareg platform over a jeep/chrysler platform any day.

as RC mentions above, porsche was involved first hand in development of the shared platform.

even if the srt develops 500 horses and sits atop that platform it is still a long shot from a cayenne chassis. just as a corvette is very different from a 911.....without into getting which and why is better.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

I don't think Maserati will take a Jeep and just dress it up. All the NEW models that they produced are huge leap forward compared to the rubbish they used to produce in the 80s and 90s.

Let's withhold judgement till we get more details.

With money ? VW. Everything else was Porsche with one little exception: there were a couple of dozens VW engineers "stationed" near Weissach (but not in Weissach Smiley) to assure a perfect cooperation and to have people locally when there are problems.

Rumors indicate that VW paid 200 Mio. EUR to Porsche for the Touareg co-development.

Maserati stands and falls with Ferrari, they are bluntly said the "recycler" of Ferrari technology. With the Maserati SUV, things will be different according to rumors. It will be completely based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee. So yes, they are going to give the Grand Cherokee a new look and Ferrari technology. I doubt that Maserati can afford to develop/build their own SUV all alone.

What is a little bit disappointing: I recently read about the Grand Cherokee V8 (engine with aprox. 350 HP power) performance and it was saying something about a 0-100 kph performance of 8.7 seconds. This is ridiculous for such a car, if true. Most modern high performance Diesel SUVs in Germany, like the X5/X6 35d or Audi Q5/Q7 are doing much better than that with a lower power Diesel engine. I hope it was a typo.

I know they wont start from scratch with a brand new SUV. I'm just hoping that they wont do the same thing Cadillac did with GMC.

You have completely right at 50%

The SUV are perfect for BMW, Mercedese..etc.. but for exclusive brands IMHO absolutely NO, I understand the ferrari owners that are seeing a ferrari SUV as scandalous, it have nothing to do wiht its traditions , style, sport result and so on.....it just don't fit ....exactly the same for maserati.

I understand economic reasons that putted porsche into this business, but since I'm very into having particular peaces of everything I own..( cars ar not longer in my buying list since a long time ago) I regret to sell my soul to the market, but can live with it in order that they can survive and present  always better 911 and sport cars.

the 993 c2  is there sleeping in the garage since many years..and I keep it there forever...and if it should wake up again ...i guess that no many suv  can beat this old lady in any track..maybe just in monza...whre you need horse power and horse power ....

was just talking about brands and products, and some SUV are not so much different from some delivery van!

I understand that I'm writing in your house, but I just expresssed a personal opinion, if somebody is offended , it was not my intention!

ps I can do the same as an x5m with a c63 amg , for less money and better style and more fun ..IMHO...

    Re: Maserati SUV?

Not sure if the Ferrari/Maserati engine is good enough for a SUV.

SUV engine requirement is quite different than regular cars, they need more torque down low vs the high rev high HP. Ferrari engines are famous for not making much torque until higher up in the rev band.

There is a reason BMW didn't stick the M5's V10 into the X5/6M, it doesn't make much torque down low. Instead it modify the twin turbo V8 because it will provide the low-end torque needed AND the high end HP.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

ferrari surely will go turbo-charged as well very soon.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

Would be interesting to see how Ferrari combat the turbo lag.

Going with VTG like Porsche, or twin scroll like BMW.

Small turbos for good initial response and max torque down low or bigger ones to boost max HP.

Then there is the matter of sound, with turbos muffling the exhaust, would the Ferrari diehards bitch about the lost of the Ferrari shriek.

    Re: Maserati SUV?

Just heard from a friend that Maserati plans to offer one or two Diesel engines on that SUV for specific markets. Not really a good idea in my opinion, unless they want to sell these cars in the same price range with the Touareg, Q7, X6, etc.

I entirely agree. In technical aspects, the X5 M or Cayenne Turbo are hugely impressive but they don´t tick the right boxes for me. I do however understand why people like them. For me, the joy to drive a 993 is not about its performance as there are dozens of cars out there that are superior in that respect.

It boils down to different taste for different people... Smiley

    Re: Maserati SUV?

Agree 100%..its a matter of choice. For my taste (which is a bit hardcore) a AMG G55 is the ideal SUV & a 911 Gt2 is the most desirable sportscar, not much point in looking at anything else IMHO
