Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I stand divided with regards to the headlight change.

While the 918's headlights are beautiful, I feel like a signature 911 trait are the round headlights. Ignoring the hideous 'fried eggs' on the 996, maybe the round headlights are the ones that should stay on the 911 and not be transferred or used anywhere else.

Unless of course, the 918 lights are better rendered for the 911... in which case the evolutionary road might take a different turn. Who knows?

On another note, I still can't shake how ready this car looks. Like I mentioned earlier, the 958 Cayenne was in the same stage of camo nudity around this time last year and we saw it in Geneva rather than another motor show later that year.

I hope that Porsche unveils the 991 in Geneva in March, followed by the new Boxster/Cayman in Frankfurt in September. That way, Porsche can begin 2012 with an entirely rejuvenated model range.

    Dreams, dreams...

I liked the 996tt headlights though... But I still prefer the traditional oval/round shape.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I never liked the 996 range. That was one of the reasons to buy 964

I think that the round headlights are an iconic item on the 911 and should not be changed, nor shared with any other Porsche model of the lineup. Lets not forget the 996 headlights "experiment", I don't think will make that mistake twice.

    I second that.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Wouldn't bother me if the lights on the 991 are like the 918.  In the end, the shape will be dictated by all the functions that need to be incorporated into the units.

And forgive me for asking again, why the nomenclature "991"?  Why not "998"?  I searched the boards but couldn' t find a discussion or answer.  Thanks in advance.

    Wonderbar:

And forgive me for asking again, why the nomenclature "991"?  Why not "998"?

It just gives Porsche more time before they have to leave the 900-series (they'll go back and use all the unused numbers).

Yes, they'd like to keep their 900s for the future. I'm happy the Cayenne/Panamera didn't get officially named 9xx eventhough the Panamera carried to code 970.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Round headlights on a 911 are traditional indeed... but also were on Ferrari and Aston Martin...

Rigth now (for me) the only part of the 997 that needs some improvement are the headlights.... the 911 is my favorite, timeless car... i like that shape and i hope porsche maintain that evolutionary design, but after the launch of cars such as Carrera GT, Cayenne (latest model), Cayman and also Panamera i think that Porsche can do un excelent job mixing classic and modern... i still love the Carrera GT headlights....

Somewere, someday there will be somebody (in Porsche Design Department) that will have a perfect day and in a moment of true inspiration will put a more clean and  modern design on the headlights...

I see it from this 2 perspectives:

    1) if they put 997 headlights (literally) on the 991 i would buy it anyway...

    2) if they put Carrera GT or 918 headlights on the 991 and make it like the new Ferrari 612 (shooting Break)... i certainly would NOT buy it...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Note that the 997 lights are not round at all. They look circular on a front elevation projection, but they are a distorted oval on a horizontal projection. They are a modern interpretation of the classic look though. The last round lights were in the 964.

What people mean by round headlights nowadays is that they still look round on the front view. If you look at them from above they are not round obvoulsy, but they need to be shaped ovally like this in order for them to still look roundish on the front view, becasue as modern design evolved and got more aerodinamic and sleek, the headlights are at a more slanted angle now after the 964.

So the fact that they are not actually ronund anymore, is presicely done to preserve its roundness when looked at from the front.

To me the 997 headlights are perfect too, and seems like they are not changing it in the 991 much Smiley

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

I was more than half thinking about a GTS after reading the write ups in EVO etc. especially as it looks like a really good deal. Having spoken with my dealer rep who's friendly with some of the engineers (I'm in Germany), he tells me the new 991/998 C2S development cars are lapping the Nordschleife in about the same time as the current GT3.

Distilling all the posts/articles and what I've read in the 83 pages here, I'm more inclined to order the new 2012 C2S with 400+hp that goes round the ring as fast as a GT3 but with 4 seats (+100mm in the wheelbase), an interior quality like a Panamera (so great).

I reckon some of that time is coming from a wider front track, some from the new rear suspension and the rest from 20kg less weight and some from better aero. I think a lap time similar to current GT3 is entirely believable. I'm going to have another talk to see what I can get in assurances about steering feel but I'm ready to order one.

     Misha011,

I have to say with the round lights (ovall, bettle lights, or other thing, ....) it also looks good, but i would love to see (on real 991) more some of that in 2nd pic.

Misha011 Your PS dedication to this forum is a very pleasant help. Thank you again.

911 headlights were never round. In the US, when the old sealed beam regulations were in effect, Porsche used the round "inserts" and modified the trim rings accordingly. But in the rest of the world, the glass lens was never really round.

But this looks pretty much very round to my eyes, no? (I'm talking about the 1988 3.2 Carrera - an original Swiss version, not a re-import from the US)127_2729.jpg

"New Porsche 911 arrived in Sweden"

    (13 January 2011)

The new Porsche 911 has been dominating the well-known test locations around the world for two years now. Of course they also tested in Scandinavia last year. Porsche is there again. The new 911 has much less camouflage than last year, but still it´s hard to get a very good impression of its final details.

These most recent spyphotos reveal very little new details. But nevertheless, the new 911 remains a new 911 and we didn't want to keep the pictures non-showed on our camera.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Yes, it looks fairly round in a front projection, as someone pointed out previously. But it isn't a simple round shape. Especially with the horizontal glass protrusion at the top, and the somewhat elongated shape. I'm probably splitting hairs...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

    Boy... the 991 is a bloated design - XK-ish?

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Fil de discussion fermé

Looks like a base Carrera model this time around - notice the single-tube oval exhaust pipes.

We've usually been seeing prototypes with twin-tube pipes characteristic of the S models or possibly models equipped with the luscious sports exhaust system... Good to see the base car running about, though. Kind of a shame that the exhaust area will look like a carryover from the 997 but hey, it's not bad on the current car so why not?

I don't think the 991 looks bloated, but it definitely looks larger than the 997. More muscular and voluptuous, and I'm really liking that rear view; reminds me of some sort of superhero's badass car.

Can someone outline how the rear engine deck lid is going to open up?? It looks messy back there to me. It looks like the third rear brake light will rise when the rear engine lid is up. Any thoughts
