Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

to me: it looks great! A giant designstep.

I would have liked to see more of this in the 991.

The slight evolution of the 991 made me decide not to place an order for the new one. I'd rather wait and buy a used one. When you have a pile of money to spend it's not a problem.

I find the evolution not strong enough to make such an investment.

BTW, what is with the sponsors on the Detroit car?!? Does that mean that the car was co-financed by the sponsor companies?

Absolutely stunning design! a great combination of sportiness, technology, and elegance in the design.

Now as Fritz says, lets hope the real race version also performs as good as it looks.

     I'm speechless

Bravo to Porsche once again !..... I don't know if some of the styling and interior parts or design in any aspect has something to do with the 991....but the future is really promising for Porsche !

    I love it !

The more I look at this car, the more tasteful it looks. Porsche has come up with a real beauty. I hope I'm lucky enough to see a 918 Spyder or 918 RSR in the flesh one day :)

Wow, i am blown away. It's the most beautiful racecar ever. So nice and so much Porsche DNA all over with a high modern take. What a great effort from Porsche. Thank god they know that they have to continue building the best race cars alongside their road going sports cars. So happy to see Porsche go this high-tech direction with a flare of history... The car is stunning. I'm already excited to go see how it will develop and perform in real world conditions. And then of course we will see a street version, but not below $400,000 haha.

Why do you consider this design retro? It is far from looking like a 917. Besides the 917 had a boxer engine this one has  a V8.

Yes, I'm not completely sold on the resemblance between the 918 and the 917. (besides some specific design cues such as the engine bay, the engine fan and the slats on the front fenders. I see a lot more 904, Ford GT40 and Ferrari 430: but as William Blake put it : there is the known and the unknown; in between lie the doors of perception. (not exact quote)

Nice car, indeed... - and then..., when I think of it, what tiny little bit of that they could have contributed to the Cayman R...an opportunity forgone....

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

According to DSC (Daily Sports Car) - a reputable source for sports car racing, it seems very likely indeed that Porsche will be requesting the ‘56th’ slot for the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the ACO have promised a slot to a car displaying green technologies. Unless some one else pops up with something more convincing, it seems we may see this car at Le Mans in 2011 (Six months away)

Wow, give us a road version of it Porsche!

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

Porsche is finaly ahead of competition. This car has it all, amazing design, technology and lots of Drama like a proper exotic should have.

Ever since the 997 Porsche started to put them selves way ahead of competition, The Carrera S with "only" 385Hp,  performed like a 420Hp car, then the Turbo S,GT3RS, GT2 RS came out showing how far they could go with this platform, and now this retro beauty full of soul...simply amazing Smiley

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

Carlos - I don't think this is just a concept. The car works. It may be "conceptual" in terms of a production road going car, but as far as a racing car goes, I think it is pretty much ready. (there will obviously be alterations made to the "real" race car in relation  to this show car)

The hybrid system is the same as that used in the GT3 R (although further developed). The engine is an evolution of the tried and tested RS Spyder (same with the gearbox), and so there is no reason to believe that this car will not be ready for some track action very soon indeed.

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

Maybe you are right, I guess that developing a racing version is not that difficult or legthly process as developing a street production version like the 918 Spyder which needs to be fully reliable and usable, pass DOT tests and regulations, have al the gizmos, produced in numbers, etc.

It doesn't take as long to develop a racing car, so that racing a car within 6 months of having "fixed" the concept is quite feasible. The race itself is the test of the car.
If the car is not reliable or competitive, you just lose the race.

Developing a road car, on the other hand, has to take much longer. It has to be tested and developed to ensure it is reliable and "foolproof" before it gets into the hands of the customer. You also need much more time to manufacture and fine-tune the production tooling and manufacturing facilities, prepare documentation and literature, obtain type approvals and certification, etc., etc..
If a production car is not reliable or competitive, you could lose the company.

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

I love the way that Porsche are doing this.

They start off with a hybrid system in the tried and tested 911. It works well, but the distance (in terms of design) between a 911 and a LMP1 car is enormous so they decide to move one step closer.

They now place the tried and tested hybrid system into a mid-engined car (closer in design to a LMP car) and use an evolution of a race winning LMP engine.

It's a smart, methodical way of doing things.

By the time they get around to building the LMP1 hybrid, all systems will have been thoroughly race tested and developed.

Re: 2011 Detroit Auto Show | 'Spectacular' Porsche concept debut

I don't consider the 918's design to be retro at all.  It is fabulous.  But I can sure see the evolution of its design from many earlier Porsches--the 904GTS and the 917 as examples.  In the first Edmonds video, the front half of the new 918 looks (to me) very much like the front of the 917.  And in the second Edmonds video, a 917 is clearly presented as part of the 918 concept evolution.  I understand that a lot of marketing is going on, and that the number 22 of the LeMans winning 917 and the new 918 is a bit gimmicky, but sure seems (to me, at least) there is some definite similarity of design evolution.

On the 917 engine, I think I recall that it was a boxer 12, not a V8.  Basically two racing boxer sixes joined together.  Later the engine was turbocharged, developing over 1000 HP.

    That's what I think. I would have preferred a flat-8 or a flat-12 instead of the V8 though.

And to the possible Le Mans run. Of course the car is ready. This is not a street car which requires a long development car. Weissach has long tested individual components and grouped components long ago.
