If ever this flat 4 appears on a 911 it will be after it is installed in the Boxster/Cayman range and the 991 range is up and running for some years. I don't expect it to be immediate. Nevertheless a forced induction 2.2 l could easily match the 265PS of entry level 2.9l 987.

First it's going into the next gen Beetle (which, rumors have it, will become rear-engined again). After that, it will make its way to the Boxter/Cayman and 911. Back to the roots .

Dear Rennteamers,
This important thread on the 991 has been cleared of recent inappropriate posts (and consequential posts).
We thank you for your patience.

Wise decision.
The secret of life is to admire without desiring.
What I know, the new Beetle's specs is long finalized and going to production soon, and it will still be front-engined (read : same reason VAG is axing rear-engine config for their upcoming "UP" citycar. Front engine + FWD is cheaper to manufacture).
And I posted the new flat 4 engine on this thread earlier. It's coming to the 991.
Of course posts of non-reception came like a flood soon afterwards, but that doesn't change anything. The flat 4 is coming.
Just like there was no stopping Porsche making an SUV and then a sedan.
I'm telling you, it's coming, and I for one am anticipating it (rather then dismissing it).
Time is changing and we can't live in the past forever. Even Bentley is downsizing to V8.
And btw, I considered the Cayman to be the "driver's car" from Porsche from the day it was born. No back seats and I'm sure everyone realized that if Porsche put their bigger engines in it, it WILL outperform its 911 counterpart. The exact reason why Porsche keeps making their supercars (Carrera GT, upcoming 918) mid-engined and not just make a GT2 with a bigger engine, IMO. Don't flame me, it's an opinion and I'm sticking with it.

Anyway those front lights are exactly the same ones I have on my 997.2 The front is almost the same as 997!!! Will this really be the final product? What does it say the text? can´t read german
And rear is exacly the same as the picture above posted by our fellow member Misha001, taken in 2008 by Autozeitung

I know 911s should always have classic round headlights, but I've been waiting almost a decade for bi-xenon look headlights from the Carrera GT to finally appear on a regular production model. Hoping for a very different headlight treatment on the next Boxster/Cayman..

The big difference on this new generation will be the interior. Different front lights are a no go after the terrible 996 experience.

Thanks very much for the scan!!
i'm confused, though-- the latest spy shots have the cut-out for the rear wing looking much different than that latest rendering-- i must say it looks rather boring to me -- and i think i like the shape of the 997 better... and certainly liked Larsen's renderings better which retained the iconic shape that we all love but also modernized it -- just my two bits...
Thanks again-- i wish i could read German and know what the text said.
Don't worry guys, AMS just rendered a mule to look like a real model. In realiy, the 991 looks pretty good but not as (r)evolutionary as many people may have hoped for. The interior however is completely new.

RC,
Can you shed some light on your trip to Porsche recently if you happen to walk by the design studio
