I had a MK5 GTi for 3 years as a daily driver and replaced it 18 months ago with a Scirocco 2.0TFSi. In terms of performance and handling there isn't really that much in it. The Scirocco is the better car but that may be due to the adaptive suspension that I believe you can get on the MK6 GTi now anyway. That said, the Scirocco looks more special and always get a positive reaction wherever I go. The boot is smaller and has a high lip so it is a bit impractical. And the rear only seats 2 people.
If you go for a Scirocco, I recommend the Dynaudio speakers and parking sensors as the rear window is a nightmare to see out of.

Golf VI has grown too big and bloated,V was the ideal size imho
I see Scirocco as a 3 door golf which is not uncessary tall,not a coupe and as such i quite like it
Unless one has kids,then extra space Golf provides is surely usefull
I'd also go for a Scirocco if the kids were very little(if by the time they start going to school car would be replaced...)

People say that the Scirocco drives better, but it could be the placebo effect of its sporty shape.
For me the GTI is the ideal car. Excellent quality in all respects, very fast in the real world and its stealth nature makes it even more desirable for every day use IMO.

Agree with reginos.
Drove both. Difference is marginal...
GTI Mk6 features XDS(electronic mimic of LSD)as standard item, Scirocco do not have it(only Scirocco R). Interior space and boot are bigger in Golf.
Decision will depend on buyer needs IMHO.

I was going through a similar thing. We have a MKV Golf GTI and was contemplating a change to a new MKVI GTI or the Scirocco (well I was).
I came to the conclusion if I didn't need the practicality of the Golf which is what it boils down to IMO then the Scirocco it is.

I would like to throw in the Golf GTD.
I've had one for a year now, after switching from a Golf GTi Mk5. It is a terrific daily driver with almost the same standard specs and power as the new GTi but much less fuel consumption. I commute daily (140km, mostly interstate and very little stop-and-go-city driving) and the consumption is little above 5l/100km whereas the GTi drank almost 9-10l/100km. That adds up over a year without loosing (almost) anything in terms of driving pleasure compared to the GTi!

I'm still torn between the two. As a daily, it should be practical as well so the GTI makes more sense to me. That said, the golf VI is like a "golf of transition", as the new model will come around pretty soon. I guess in 2012.
What about adaptive suspension? is it a must have option?
what I'm looking for is not comfort, but handling. Is the sport's mode less sporty thant a car without the adaptative suspensions?

I've not drove a Scirocco without adaptive suspension as it is standard equipment here in the UK, but what I would say is that switching it to Sport mode also adds a bit more "weight" to the steering. For that reason alone I would go for it without hesitation. Assuming it does the same on the GTi of course.

I had two Golf GTI VI one after the other, both fullpack (DSG, Navi, leather, iPod,...), but the later had the dcc (adaptive suspension) and i would definetelly go for it again.
Standard is a very good compromise between handling, stifness & comfort, the comfort mode is equal to a ride in a bmw 5series, only at higher speeds, twisted roads it's not good to drive.
And sport makes lot of fun, but is very harsh and not recommended on bumpy roads as the car starts to jump around...
My "white princes" (the white one - MY 2011) reached on the Autobahn 267 km/h on the digital speedometer, passing at that speed a Mercedes C63 which was in its limiter!!
The "black mamba" just did 261 km/h as well on the digital speedometer (MY2010)
I would for sure get a GTI again in spring as dd, although i'm thinking of a Golf R as well, but it has over 150kg but just 60ps more...
