Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Thanks for clarifying assman :) I understand that point. But IMvHO the key reason why this reasoning was flawed (not just with hindsight after the race but also at the time when Ferrari took the decision to pit Alonso early) is that the small time difference between Alonso and Webber (which Ferrari wrongly thought they needed to cover) would be comfortably outweighed by the delay that Webber would inevitably suffer in passing the traffic that Red Bull knew (and which Ferrari ought to have realised) Webber would be in the midst of after completing his pit stop.

The other key point to note - Alonso is not complaining publicly about Ferrari's tactical mistake in front of the world's media. He knows that he needs to keep the relationship as a happy one - even if Ferrari cost him the title this year - because Alonso wants to spend the rest of his career with Ferrari - and he is running out of other competitive teams to drive for. The doors of McLaren are permanently closed. Alonso has lost 2 years in an uncompetitive car at Renault. The only other teams in which he can realistically win the drivers' title in future are Red Bull, Ferrari and (perhaps) Mercedes GP. Alonso is a smart man. He knows he should not burn too many more relationships since he could otherwise end up being a great driver whom no team will want to employ.

    GR:

Ferrari ought to have sufficient info to work out that Webber would have been stuck behind the Torro Rosso and Renault, unless they guessed that the sponsor/engine ties would mean Webber being let through

Exactly my point too Smiley The teams can calculate very accurately exactly where the driver should slot back in after a pit stop. They have 'driver tracker' software that enables them to see this very easily.

Very good point. I cannot argue with you on that. From that perspective, it was a knee-jerk reaction by Ferrari. For all of Domenicali's assurances that the team will stay calm, collected and focused it seems like they committed an unforced error. Such a shame since I'm a Ferrari fan Smiley

As for Alonso - again you are quite right - he has few options left. Unfortunately for Ferrari (in the even that they do not prove to be competitive in future seasons) I don't know how long he will be able to keep his mouth shut Smiley Once a twat... always a twat, proven time and time again.

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

    @ Thoma

IMHO Mika should shut up, MS for sure is not (yet) at the same level he was in his former days, but still we all should keep in mind that f1-driving is professional sport and his teammate (NR) is definetelly one of the best "young guns" out there and he was only by a margin slower than him!

Mika was driving in DTM for years and was just able to win 3 times, he did'nt prove anything after his f1-retirement, the loss of the 2k-titel against MS ended his career mentaly...

BTW I was a huge fan of MH in his f1-time, and untill MS return I didn't like him at all, but I think it's great that he's back and hopefully next year Mercedes-GrandPrix will provide him with a good car and he gets accostumed well to the new Pirelli-tyres...

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Mika left the DTM in anger, but he still has strong ties to Mercedes. What he says must be a blow to Norbert Haug.

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

He left in anger as he had to realise, that being a double-f1-champ dind't grant him the "respect" from the other drivers.

But it's fun to see, that no f1-driver yet was able to be succesfull in dtm...

Lets say Mika didn't agree on some decisions by race-control and that was his "official" reason to leave.

He was humiliated in public by Norbert Haug several times, which IMO was the real reason he left. It wasn't the drivers respect, he felt like a marketing puppet.

This was his official reason to leave:

Häkkinen got the biggest penalty in dtm history. (22.000€ penalty and 10 grid places on the next race)

Does Alonso really need to congratulate Vettel personally having already congratulated him via the interviews that Alonso gave to the world's press? IMHO it's not necessary but it would be a nice gesture of sportsmanship.

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Some disturbing things surfacing on the net about how Ferrari and Alonso fans have been abusing Vitaly Petrov who was just driving his own race. The guy is desperate to stay in F1 in 2011 and people just expected him to move over for Alonso. That's just crazy.

Ferrari finally start to admit that they got the tactics wrong:

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

What did Petrov expect, its logical the Ferrari fans are going to vent their anger and frustration towards him, a mediocre driver on the verge of being kicked out of F1 got in between a title fight in a desperate attept to hold on to his seat for next year, his small gain cost a huge loss on another team. Thats how they see it, its a great scapegoat. But, this is racing and Petrov did exactly what he was supposed to do, and should do, if Alonso could not pass him, then it was only Ferrari's fault and no one else's.

Sure, he could of moved over for Alonso, but then maybe he would be ruining Vettel's chances of the title in turn. would that be fair? No. Just because Alonso was leading in points coming into that last race does not give him the privilige that non title contenders should get out of his way, because that would not be fair to the other title contenders. Unfortunately for Petrov, it happened on the very last race of the season, because if it would of happened on any other race, no one would of given it a second thought IMO. It will all pass anyway, like with Glock.

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

+1 Agreed Carlos  But even if Alonso could get past Petrov, Alonso still needed to get past Rosberg to win the title. That would have been a much tougher challenge. And no one would expect Rosberg to move over for anyone.

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Not only Rosberg, depending on were in the race he would of passed Petrov, he also needed to pass Kubica as well, another Renault, and if Petrov was tough, imagine a driver as tough as Kubica! Petrov just got caught in the middle of it all. Realistically, the title was lost as soon as he came out of the first stop... in another track he would of had a very good chance, but in Abu Dhabi which is the most boring track of the year where the only opportunity to pass was with top speed at the end of the straight, it was over. Interestingly, test driver Gene was comenting at the beginning of the race that Ferrari had chosen a conservative aerodinamic setup for the car with more downforce but less top speed... we see how that worked out for Alonso too

Re: 2010 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Poor sports, these loser Fans. I'm sorry, but this was pretty clean and normal. Yes it was damn close, and Alonso went in with the lead. At the end of the day, Ferrari did some mistakes and Alonso couldn't pass a Renault. Of course it's hard coming in second after such an intense and hard season.. Vettel did it last year. I though it was a great and clean last race to end a fantastic season. Pedrov didn't make anyone lose anything... he just raced his race.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)
