I think it looks more "right" than the closed version.
I don't know if it suffers dynamically though. But I doubt it because Mercedes have a lot of experience with the SL models.
The Roadster musn’t have necessarily more weight than the Coupe. The design of the gullwings and their attachment to the roof is also relatively heavy.
I think the cabrio is’nt bad at all. Could be a good 3rd. car for summertime....
in all honesty this makes it just another merc. the whole idea behind the car is gone.....
i would have never even considered this car if it were only in convertible form.
it was only the package with the doors that made it special.

I'm 100% with you: just another Mercedes... But, it could be the right car for MY personal preferences, as I don't like the gull wings that much.
You'd be better off getting a Turbo Cab or something similar. Maybe SLR roadster will be a better choice?
There was a convertible 300SL offered concurrently w/ the 300SL Gullwing and it was an extremely attractive car in its own right, so I do not view this offering as anything other than a logical market extension of the model.

Actually the open top 300SL of that era looks to me nicer than the Gullwing. It's also very attractive with the hardtop fitted.

If I would like to have a Porsche Cab I would have ordered it instead of the Coupe. But I would’nt certainly trade the SLS for the 997 Turbo S.
To avoid misunderstandings:
I think the SLS is absolutely attractive whether with wing doors or as a convertible.
Just for MY PERSONAL use I would’ nt choose the Gullwing, but the convertible. The technical basis of the SLS Convertible will be as satisfying as the Coupe and I am sure that it in Germany will attract more buyers than the Gullwing. Lets see what will happen
We all liked the SLS convertible. It had a good road presence. At that time they had not decided on the top but were fairly certain it would be a soft top.
That said, it did not stand out as anything special.
It is somewhat ironic that without the gimmicky gull-wing doors the SLS convertible became more pedestrian looking.
