    Favourite Driving Roads...

There must be countless examples around the world...

For many years this was my favourite local road for some spirited driving... the A537 from Macclesfield in Cheshire to Buxton in Derbyshire, often referred to as the Cat & Fiddle road after the name of a pub situated on it.

Unfortunately, following several motor cycle accidents, it is now blighted with speed cameras but is still a great drive through splendid countryside..Smiley

Our roads are crap really but they just opened a new montain road and I took it about a month ago, I went for a weekend up on the mountains so I took out jeep but I kept saying to myself "If only I was driving a porsche on this twisties right now" about every 3 seconds. Perfectly smooth asphalt, new signs, freshly painted lines, almost no traffic. It was epic.

I hope so Fritz - it would be great to see the top driving roads from around the world.  Might even encourage us to maybe plan to visit some 'en bloc' at some stage..Smiley

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

can't find any good vids of my favorites yet(other than Leno's LA ride), but this road has always been my favorite motorcycle road to watch. This guy is just giving a clinic.

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

I found this 2 videos on the internet, As you would expect from the size of Hong Kong,  It's one of few good roads in the country side and very short as well.

This is the road I go most on to have fun. Here is a vid in a Porsche, but the driver is quite bad .

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

and this one on my favorite and main test drive road , view from a Honda CBR , you can really see well what kind of road it is.  Lots of accidents happen every year on this road, as people meet at the end of the day to do runs..... a mix of car and bikes......and it does get very hot !!!

Cops are now often there to prevent the crazy driving.

Another one, on my 2nd favorite road . It's filmed from a Shelby GT 350 , during a closed event. When I go on it , they  are no chicanes, nor spectators

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

In the neighborhood of where my parents live, there is the river Rhine.
On both shores of this river, there are dikes, which wind back and forth. Since they're a little bit elevated above the famously flat Dutch landscape, you can really oversee the curves very well, and the river "valley" is quite nice.

Way out west of Austin, Hwy 337 is pretty fun. Not my video but some sport bikes moving up the canyon.

    Here's a link: video.google.com/videoplay

Tried all the ways I could think to embed it, none seemed to work. Someone want to PM me with instructions?

I've driven Deal's Gap a few times. Always pretty much bumper to bumper with traffic but I guess the locals find the right time to run it. They're pretty proud of it.

It does! Bikes vibrate a lot and since he poorly mounted the camera on the bike over the engine, thats what the camera pics up, instead of the exhoust &actual engine sound. He needed to place the mic away, separated from the camera to pick that up.

Check out the difference, and this is with a standard exhaust before I fitted the Akrapovic Smiley

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

Dave, great pass in Switzerland. Would love to drive that sometime.

In another thread, posters were lamenting that we can't really use our cars to their full potential, to the way they were designed, by which they meant that few of us have the opportunity to open them up all the way and drive at top speed.

But it seems to me that it is roads like these on which Porsches and other sports cars are most fun, roads like these for which they were designed, roads that put handling, breaking and acceleration ahead of top speed.

Most of the legendary roads are about having fun in and out of corners, not on a five mile straightaway.

Not only the sound but the video is of some crappy highways and NOT the tail of the dragon. Lots of 928'rs do the dragon, it is near an annual GTG spot.

@ Dave Gordon - that is awesome scenery thanks for showing. But the road looks a bit dangerous.

Yeah, I assumed that was the vid I wanted. My bad. Here's a good one from the back of a bike:

    Re: Favourite Driving Roads...

One of my "tracks" in the area where I use to live. Kind of ironic that it has pockets of great natural beauty in a really lousy climate and a mediocre economy in a falling apart city in a lousy state.

But anyways here is the track where I would drive the 928 and do a lot of bike riding. Lots of little lakes and reservoirs in this area in general and this particular area had reservoirs with govt. owned land around them minimizing any people in the area.

    X - my Eau Rouge

Y - extremely scenic spot looking back at the lake and the straight

Z - start of the area

    > - the turn down onto the straight

    1287326210251wormtown ride.jpg

The start area labeled - Z

    wormtown.jpg

The turn down onto the straight along the water, very pretty

    wormtown1.jpg

The straight itself, this whole place was safe for driving as their was no activity and sight lines were clear and long, would often do acceleration starts here

    wormtown2.jpg

end of straight, go left or right, whichever to change the approach at eau rouge

    wormtown3.jpg

Choose right and go to the the area marked Y on map, this spot had one of the best views on the planet for water and forest combined, i would always stop here on bike rides

    wormtown4.jpg

the look back, mile long view of crystal clear drinking water and forest

    wormtown look.jpg

choose left and head up into some dense forest

    wormtown3a.jpg

Either way and you are ready to hit Eau Rouge from the east or West. I call it Eau Rouge because just like Spa F1 course this was a long fast straight that had a steep curving hill on either side. This was really fun in the 928. The handling and lowness and smoothness of the 928 engine made this enjoyable.

Marked X on the map and hill is steeper than it appears, reservoir on either side, beautiful

    wormtown5.jpg

     Great views, safe, and fun
