I spent a day and a half machine polishing it at my dealer and it's looking a lot brighter. It needs more paint correction and both rear wings require repainting. I'm going to get the rear panel done at the same time so that the cavalino can be removed. I've changed the steering wheel for the correct original and it now has the proper "dino" badged horn push 
I was working in the bay alongside the head tech who's going to be working on my car so we had a really good chat about it and cars in general whilst he was working on a 360 spider. He's looking forward to getting stuck into my Dino and is as bad as me when it comes to getting all the little details correct so I know the car is in safe hands.

Those won't be forthcoming as a) I'm not an American and therefore b) I've no intention of getting it up to Pebble Beach "far better than it ever left the factory" standard

All the instruments are working including the clock........ and that's rare I believe.
The cam covers are weeping oil so that requires investigation but isn't a huge job. I'm having the fuel lines and brake hoses checked along with the engine ancilliaries (water pump, alternator, starter etc) and will likely have the cambelt replaced to be on the safe side. I found a complete set of brand new interior carpets for a pretty good price which is handy as the current ones are pretty tired looking. The bonus is the new ones are a lovely deep red and will really lift the interior a lot. There are a couple of areas of the vinyl trim that will need replacing due to tears but the correct material to do this is readily available.

Bit of an update. The head tech has started checking the car over and it's generally in good shape.
The bodywork is in very good overall condition but there is some surface bubbling on various panels. Someone has also over enthusiastically pressed down on the front trunk lid at some point when closing it and put a slight crease in it. I've had a very good price to repaint both ends of the car. I decided that I'd get the crease taken out of the bonnet and also remove the headlight covers at the same time. These were not a factory fit item and I prefer the open headlight look but unfortunately the fixings for the covers are drilled into the wings. This necessitates that they are metal filled meaning the entire wings will have to be painted. As this means that around 60% of the car is being painted I'm going to see if I can cut a deal to have the whole car done as there are areas on the doors that would benefit from attention . It will likely prove a smart move in the long run.
The radiator has had a bodge it repair at some point but can be re-cored. Someone had also done a bit of a hash repair of wiring the cooling fans so that's been tidied up. The suspension bushes are worn on the rear and need replaced and the alternator appears to be suffering a voltage drop which suggests it's either not 100% healthy or there is a wiring overheating issue somewhere. An upgraded replacement alternator is available at sensible money so I'll most likely have one fitted. The wiring will all be checked as there are a few electrical issues such as dash lighting and one heater fan not working. The clutch doesn't feel quite right and the pedal is a touch high. It's not clear as yet if this is an adjustment issue or a worn clutch. The cam covers are weeping oil so will be taken off and new gasket seals fitted. Whilst they are off the valve clearances will be reset and a specialist is coming in to tune up the Weber carb's. I was concerned about the condition of fuel and brake lines but it seems these are all in very good shape and look to have been replaced recently with high quality items.
The wheels are being removed and sent off to a specialist who can deal with magnesium rims and will be stripped, sealed and refinished. A new set of tyres is due to arrive this week as the current ones are over 10 years old.
An unexpected additional expense will be the replacement of just over half the glass in the cabin. The windscreen has been badly scratched at some point by the wipers after the rubber blades have evidently been worn down. The drivers side window also has a deep scratch in it that will not polish out. The front quarter lights have also had a bodged repair at some point and been wedged closed. Luckily all of these parts are readily available and the total cost will be less than the price of a replacement screen I had to have fitted to one of my Gallardos a few years back.
Hopefully all of this work will give me a well sorted, very usable example and I'm itching to get out driving it. Here are a couple of better quality pics of how she looks at present.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I wish I didn't live so far from my dealer as I'd be visiting every other day if I could. I'll keep updating as and when there is any significant progress to report.
An interesting point is that the After Sales/Workshop Manager there is very keen to get more involved with the older models as he said that the new cars (California, 458 and 599 together with the GranTurismo and later generation of Quattroporte) now require so little scheduled maintenance and are generally so reliable that the dealership needs to pull in other work. He's going to use my Dino as an example of the maintenance overhaul and bodywork/trim restoration services he can offer to potential customers. He apparently had 3 people ask to see my car today alone.

I love watching the development of the car. It's just beautiful. How is it to drive?
I don't know as yet as I've only driven it around a small compound in 1st gear
Every owner I've spoken to says they are great fun to drive so time will tell. I doubt I'll be disappointed and am looking forward to going back to a car without power steering, ABS or any of the other driving aids we take for granted nowadays. It's been 20 + years since I've had a car without any of those and I'm hoping it will provide more involvement and enjoyment at much lower speeds.

Thanks for the updates, it's great to developed a relationship with this shop as well, your mechanic sounds like an honest bloke, so your project will give him great advertising. It's a win/win. Great to see dealers bringing older cars back due to the changing car's reliability.

Wow Iain,
I never was into ferrari's, and never really understood the mambo jambo about "passion"... but your thread starts to bring it to life for me. Really love reading through your detailed report of what needs to be done, what will be done, and how the tech is of great help to you. If they deliver, these people really sound like ones that you would really trust your car to.
Thanks for the updates and pictures, they really get my blood pumping!

It occured to me last night that with all the other work I'm doing to the car the current dashboard covering is going to look at bit out of place as it's pretty well worn. I wasn't sure what series of Dino my car is as there were three different types built during the 5 year production run. These were called the L, M and E series and referred to minor changes made to the specification by Ferrari throughout the production run. Having looked into the differences it appears my car is an M series which is interesting as according to Ferrari's website the M series was only produced for a short period in 1971 yet my car is a 1972...... typical Ferrari 
The M series cars were fitted with the same dash covering as the 365 Daytona - a fabric called Mousehair which I think may have been the forerunner to alcantara. This material is still available so I'm looking into the cost of having the dash removed and retrimmed in it. One benefit of an older car is that they have very limited electrics and no airbags so dash removal isn't the major job it is on a modern car.
It's proving to be fun just sourcing parts for the car and trying to ensure it is put into a condition where it will last for many years without further major work being required. I wonder if someone in 38 years time will get the same kick out of buying and using my 458? I'd certainly like to think they will.

Well i think they would, but they would need a PhD in electronics.
I certainly second the sourcing of parts. I am currently doing so for my 1974 Mercedes-Benz. My city is quite small, and my funds are very limited, so it's a real challenge. But that is the fun part too, because rewards feel very big.
I know exactly what you are going through in slowly uncovering the cars past, what it is, and where it came from. It's nothing short of fascinating.

On sunday I am going to a local car auction. They have a grey Dino to sell . I wonder what the prices are at the moment ?
( BTW , on the presentation of the auction, the car is listed under Fiat and not Ferrari )
Before you are tempted to bid on it, make sure you know what are letting yourself in for as there was a separate model which really was called the Fiat DIno. It's not in the same league as the Ferrari Dino.

There are two Fiat Dino models. A desirable spider and a less popular 4 seat coupe. This is a good site showing all of the examples and the history etc www.dinouk.com/index.html
I've always wanted a Fiat Dino spider but there are some poor examples out there which would be costly to sort out. The Ferrari Dino was poorly protected against rust so you need to check over any examples pretty thoroughly.
