    California with Stop-Start technology

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/Ferrari-California-4.3-V8-Start/Stop/253110/

A welcome side effect of this fuel saving and emission reducing system is that the irritating characteristic of Ferrari engines to sound as if they are revving like mad even at idle speed, will cease.

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

I hate start and stop, have it on my Mini Countryman test car and it annoys me over and over again. It may save fuel but it surely makes me sweat every time the engine shuts off at the red light. I now started avoided putting it in neutral, just to keep the engine running.

The explanation is simple: I had some cars in the past which had the bad habit to shut off the engine at a red light and no, it didn't happen to save fuel.

It was a nightmare I never recovered from.

A start-stop-system for engines with less than 8 cylinders is annoying. A start-stop-system for any Ferrari engine is plain idiotic. Smiley

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

Start-stop on a V8 Ferrari is like an obese man ordering a super-size Big Mac menu with diet coke.

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

    +1 ridiculous !

if you want green, do it right.....otherwise just enjoy.

i am very conscious about the environment i live in and try to lave as small a footprint as possible in my daily lif be it business or fun.

however, i will continue to enjoy my sin which is combustion engines !

politicians want us to conserve energy and reduce co2 emmitance. then again they commute with 15 cars escorted by motorcycles and travel with 10 persons in a 747.....gimme a break !!

I am sure the damn system can be turned off. And owners will continue to enjoy the music that Reginos dislikes...

But then you should save the 1000 Euro for this useless option. Smiley

Sorry for being OT, but can you give us a small report on the countryman..my wife wants one Smiley

As for START and STOP, I do find it very disturbing...and ridiculous on a Ferrari.  But my bet is we will have it also on the 991 Smiley

I don't dislike the sound when really accelerating and extending the engine or at speed. On the contrary it's stimulating.

It's just that at walking pace, for example at a traffic lights queue, or even at idle they sound not only noisy but raucous too as if idling at 3.000 rpm. Passers-by usually turn and wonder what's the point for so much disturbing noise at 5 km/h

That is the same whether a 328 or a 430.

There is no try. Just do.

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

There is a test in Autocar of the Countryman Cooper Diesel this week, which is not very complimentary for the new MINI model.

However, I await RC's comments for a more thorough opinion.

Ferrari's have always been peaky horsepower engines making power thru very high rpm's with little power from torque down low in the rev range. So to start moving 3000lbs from a dead stop, those engines have to be turning quite a bit vs. a muscle car engine or a diesel tractor.

Even the 599 GTO sounds that way at idle, no rumble. (also tied into the flat plane crank design)

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

Entering a parking garage with a Ferrari is hard enough, with Start-Stop it will draw even more attention...

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

You seem to be missing the point that the noise, even at idle, is a selling poing for Ferrari. That's why some people even bypass the muffled outer exhausts and make their cars even louder at lower RPM.

I guess a Ferrari is not enough in your face, some people really need a lot of attention. Maybe they did not get it from their mother Smiley Smiley Smiley

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

I experienced the Start/Stop system in the Panamera and it annoyed the crap out of me, fortunately it could be easily turned off with a button. To put that on a Ferrari to save fuel is plain nonsense. Next brilliant idea, energy saving tires on sportcars

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

It's not an option that will sell a lot. imo its just a publicity stunt, showcase it at Paris to get the message across that they care about emissions, that way if anyone ever accuses them they can fall back on this.

    Re: California with Stop-Start technology

It seems to be going this way in the automotive world. Most brands are doing sometimes "Green" so that looking back they can put it in their history books. Looks we were right there.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)
